Warner Bros. was called out!
Speed Racer didn't make $20 million at the U.S. Box Office this past weekend!
The shiteous film didn't come in second, as the studio had claimed.
Speed Racer only made $18 million, meaning that it opened in the #3 spot at the weekend.
Yup, that means Ashton Kutcher's Vegas rom-com beat the overpriced Speed Racer flick.
Hollywood execs tell lies to protect their egos! Shady. Shady.
However, Paramount is also guilty of rounding up Iron Man's opening weekend numbers, — actual was $98 million, not the $100 million they touted.
You just can't trust anyone in this town!

They take the totals from friday night and multiply by 3 to get the average for the weekend- which they post. Then on Monday is when they do the accurate totals.

When it is initially based on estimates, there is a HUGE difference between a two million dollar projection error on 100 mil vs. 20. . . AND Speed Racer is a huge budget loser anyway. Who made the better business investment? Obviously, the producers and studios behind Vegas and Iron Man.

I called this one about a year back, when I first heard they were doing a Speed Racer movie. It was just stupid to think an old kids anime tv show that was never even that popular in the U.S. to begin with was gonna adapt to a successful live action movie in 2008. Whoever let this thing have such a ridiculously high budget was just asking for a ton of problems, and they deserve them for wasting all that money that could have been spent in so many better ways, even if it was just in the realm of hollywood.

Warner Bros has already made their masterpiece of the year: Digital Versatile Doom live at the Orpheum Theatre XXXVII A.S. By HIM. Kudos to Warners/Sire and the band.
Mattel, the toy company, was heavily involved in the creative direction of the movie. (The company has rights to Speed Racer toys based on the movie.) So it's probably no coincidence that Speed Racer looks a lot like a live action Hot Wheels movie. Mattel was also involved with Pixar's Cars, which turned out to be a phenomenal success in terms of toy sales.
But Mattel bet wrong on Speed Racer and the Wachowskis. Mattel should have backed a live-action Hot Wheels movie, which used the same production design style as Speed Racer, and said Hot Wheels movie should have been released in the spring and with a runtime of around 90 minutes.
But now the failure of Speed Racer pretty much guarantees that no live-action Hot Wheels movie will see production anytime soon.

The guy who stars in this is totally FUGS! I saw him on tv last week and was shocked that he was starring in a movie. He looks like he should be working at Long John Silver's. It would have been at least okay with someone like Chace Crawford in it. The first 7-8 minutes of this that are online are sooo unwatchable. Wow. So bad.

Not that long ago a top Warner Bros. exec stated publicly that they were not going to make any more films with females in the lead role. Misogyny is widespread in this world, as are other forms of discrimination…….but I thought we,as a society, had moved beyond being so blatant and extreme about it. I thought we had gotten to a place where the most obnoxious forms of discrimination would no longer be tolerated. I was wrong. Seems most ppl commenting don't know about the WB's statement —— Because if you did you might understand well informed females have a REASON TO REJOICE in the power of karma. They are only getting a fraction of what they deserve with this big mistake of a movie, but at least its something. Just imagine if the statement- We are no longer making movies with FEMALE leads — was changed to a sentence that had BLACK, JEWISH, GAY, or any other group with a history of being discriminated against. I hope the next 50 WB movies flop, or at least until the company replaces the women hating exec. I for one, am glad Perez is posting about this movie's failure - although I don't know his reason's for taking an interest in it — I suspect it could have something to do with a dislike for discrimination.
The cartoon is much more entertaining.

I went and saw Speed Racer, and my final verdict was…
I have seen much worse. MUCH worse. It was cute. Harmless. A children's film. Visually, it was great. It's like a new realm of film; I liked it.
The storyline pretty much followed the anime. No big deviations, actually. (Except for what I'm praying was the shiteous Racer X/Rex Hollywood decision; I'm too afraid to check and see if it's anime-supported.)
It's okay. It's not the worst movie ever made, like Perez is touting it. Be good to take the kids to.

Get off this movie! I ACTUALLY saw it (I'm sure YOU haven't) with my two kids. They loved it, and I thought it was a decent movie. Most people bashing it only saw the commercials, trailers, and/or first 7 minutes.

We saw this movie friday with our 7 and 9 year old boys. They loved it. They are obsessed with speed racer now. It was pretty action packed, lots of crashes and martial arts so i wouldn't take kids that are either freaked out or will mimick that stuff, and I wouldnt take anyone under 7. Neither of them had a hard time figuring out what was going on, heck they were explaining things to me. The critics may not like it but the younger crowd will. Don't under estimate the money these age groups will spend!

Went and saw this last night at the IMAX expecting it to be awful… HOLY CRAP was I wrong. I am already seeing it again this weekend, forcing my friends to go. This movie was amazing.
It wasn't as bad as the critics made it. My five year old boy loved it and wants to see it again.
It's really funny to hear you, of all people, sound surprised that "you just can't trust anyone in this town". You who shamelessly self-promotes, only attacks certain celebs (Nicole & Keith, Jen Aniston, LL, etc…), idolizes some celebs (Angelina Jolie, Madonna, etc…), and ignores others when they do well (Brittney Spears). I actually saw this movie over the weekend, and its no where as bad as everyone says it is. Everyone needs to remember that its a kids cartoon that they are developing into a MOVIE, so it has to be extreemly family friendly. I had a smile on the whole time I was there, and although there were parts I didn't like as much, I think it was a really fun summer movie that anyone could enjoy (I didn't even go with a kid, just me and my boyfriend)

I saw it last night and it ROCKED. The first 8 minutes definitely doesn't set the tone for how the rest of the movie is. Its a fun summer movie and I recommend seeing it! Emile Hirsch is HOT!!!!
Wanna know who's really lying? All these people showing up at Perez' site talking about how much they LOVE LOVE LOVED the movie. Pardon me, but if the movie was really that good, methinks word-of-mouth would have created something other than a pathetic third-place return on such an expensive, highly marketed film. That little movie "Star Wars" in 1977 had very little support from its studio, but word-of-mouth made it a smash hit. Enough said. Warner secretaries and interns, please go home now! I saw both movies and id totally spend more money to go see speed again..iron man was so generic(was, terrorist, ladies man,etc) at least speed was a wholesome movie that didnt have to do with present day terrors..

This isn't a big deal…of course Iron Man would round up to $100 million…of course Speed Racer would round up to save a bit of face. The James Bond films typically change the gross so it ends in "007"…

Speed Racer was a great movie, if you didn't like the fact that the action film actually had a good story line then you have to at least give credit to the ridiculous CGI effects that they came up with. The movie is not like anything else that has ever been done and you have to applaude the Wachowski brothers for doing what they did. And Speed Racer is not going to be a loss, when they open internationally it will gain it's money back, everyone else in the world will appreciate what they did and how they did it.
"Speed Racer" is tanking overseas as well. All the Warner Bros. secretaries in the world can post (using multiple profiles) to Perez Hilton's blog how they think the movie is grand, but the world for once knows better.
