All good things come to an end!
According to a new report, last Tuesday night's American Idol only reeled in 21.25 million viewers — good but not Idol good.
Apparently, the show has not been that 'low' since its second season in 2003.
What's the deal?!
It's just not been their season!
Dancing with the Stars is creeping up and could take away Idol's king of the TV jungle crown. Dancing has averaged 21.67 million viewers on Monday nights this season, and the distance between the two appears to be getting smaller.
Fire Paula and shake things up for next season!
This trend (below) needs to end.

Get rid of Paula and Randy!!!!! I Tivo the show and fast forward through Paula and Randy and go straight to Simon. I agree with him 97% of the time.
Also the quality of singers has dropped since Chris Daughtry's season.
The Singers are good but they are Boring. David A is a Kid, The David Cook is a massive tool , and Syesha is boring as well

BORING!!! Everyone has been bored with it for years now. Turn it off. Take it off the air, but then I've never watched it. Maybe that's the problem, they;ve always assumed everyone was watching when the are not. Same old, Same old, you know?

The contestants show absolutely no signs of life or personality, but they are there to sing, so that is maybe understandable…but Ryan Seacrest drags the whole thing down because he is sooo boring! introduce the mentors early, and have them gone by the final 5 or 6, to make them sing mariah carey songs at the end is kind of BS

Before the season started, Idol kept saying that this was the most talented group ever. It wasn't. Some of them, I could not wait for them to go. Also, the show has basically been touted David A. as the new idol, at this point never saying anything bad about him. It is getting boring….Also, they do not need 1 hour to kick off someone. (I know the ratings for wednesdays aren't there)I watch the last few minutes to avoid all the crap.
I've heard Simon say that the lower viewership has to do with the lack of charisma from the contestants, and he's completely wrong. Here are the two problems:
1. The judges are tired and predictable at this point. You don't even need them because the just recycle their own same three comments over and over. I would say keep Simon, but replace Paula and Randy.
2. The music and special guests they're choosing is geared toward older people who may not be watching Idol anyway. I'm 31 years old and actually love the show for the most part. But as much respect one may have for people like Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, and Mariah Carey, and I don't want to see celebrities or hear music that I would find listening to the crap radio show Delilah. Get some younger, hipper celebs and rock the show a little bit more.

Wow, most of the people here are pretty much in agreement about a few things. Paula's whole act is worn out. She contributes nothing. Ryan is a hack who sucks the life out of the show. He's actually kind of repulsive. If they were replaced things would have to be better.

the low ratings in my opinion are for one reason and that is, the songsa re owned by the posers, cuz they are not artists….write your own songs and sing them and play them live THAt is a true artist, come up with your own sound and style, THAt is an Artist.

"Idol" rating ALWAYS decline as the season progresses because most people (like myself) only like the first part. By the time they pear it down to 10 singers…. who wants to listen to the same people sing over and over and over, week after week. BORING!
Everyone knows it's the same every season. The show picks its winner and they pretend to count up our "votes" until the end when their chosen contestant "wins". Until they change the voting system and people stop feeling ripped off the show will continue to tank. Also, shorten the results shows to a half hour. All the filler stuff is crap and really boring. I don't even watch those shows anymore. I go online and get the results from the East Coast feed.
Maybe people are wising up to the fact that it's over hyped, glorified karaoke. Who cares if someone you may potentially buy an album from, if you're stupid, can sing a Dolly Parton song? Who cares if some chick you may potentially buy an album from, again if you're stupid, can sing a Neil Diamond song? It's a dime a dozen karaoke contest that you could catch at any dive bar in the world. I can't believe people actually buy into this bullshit. Go support your local music scene and stop watching and supporting this nonsense. If you're too young to do that then go pick up your guitar hero and fake play a bunch of tunes you've never heard of.

Who cares if u´r pitchy or not…really…Judges r out of touch….To be a good and interesting artist it´s not this what is important among other stupid things judges use to say. It has NOTHING to do with the judges. Trust me, if they took off any of those 3 judges, the show would have a weird feel to it since we're so accustom to their personalities. SPEAKING OF PERSONALITIES, that's the reason there's no "umph" this year!!! The top 12 were BORING. There's been NO CONNECTION with any of them. (maybe Brooke because she was the most "real") And the "talent" is just mediocre. I haven't gotten any chills this season from one performance… you know that "wow performance". NEXT SEASON… more fun UPBEAT top 12 and better voices!!!!
The show is getting really boring. this season the contestants suck! i do have to say that most shows would love to hav 21.25 million watchers. so tho it is lower than normal. its still pretty high ratings compared to alot of shows on tv.
Wow, there are so many things they need to do differently to save this show. #1, FIRE Paula & Seacrest! #2, STOP having such shitty guests on…I mean, Neil Diamond? Dolly Parton? Andrew lloyd Weber? Seriously. Now don't get me wrong, there is a time and place for these three celebrities–but it is NOT on American Idol. I mean, who is producing this show? Freakin' Bea Arther? The kids today don't even know who these people are. Idol is a show for young people, so why would you have such shitty guests on to "coach" them? Oh yeah, and they had Mariah Carey on….don't the judges ALWAYS tell the contestants NOT to try Mariah songs? Then they have her on and have the idols ALL sing her songs? Stupid. I also don't think that America should get to decide the winner, I think the judges should still have a say in determining who stays and goes. It's just a crappy popularity contest otherwise. All I can say is thank God for David Cook. The Idol producers better figure it out or the show will tank and be cancelled…which may not be a bad thing after-all.

I think everyone focusing on how the ratings have dropped is playing a major role in how many people actually tune in. if you keep telling the public that its tanking, you'll eventually get tanking ratings.
the talent this year is very much like every other season. yes the judges rehash their comments and are very repetitive and wtv, but theres some genuine talent we should be focusing on. Cook in incredible, as incredible as any other of my fave contestant i've followed on the show is over the years.
Please, please, please focus on the actual talent and the songs (which most studio versions are incredible for what they have to work with and the themes they've had)

Their ratings are steadly going down because they are picking mediocre contestants. They're pushing David Archuletta, but his voice has no dept and is at best average.

its not that "they" are picking mediocre contestants. it is the american public who picked the people who are left! there were plenty of fun contestants with colorful personalities this season. But they have all been eliminated! pretty early on! But please do not blame Paula for any ratings decline! i would say.. without her, the show would just lose all its charm and excitement. There is no freakin way I would watch american idol without her.
The loss of audience has nothing to do with the panel. The problem is the contestents are cookie-cutter. A true pop star needs to be edgy. When contestants look like Wayne Newton's son and sing songs from the 50's…the audience gets tired. The contestents and their music doesn't reflect today's music scene.
Rework the format… give the kids 'real' mentorship….y'know the kind they'll get if they win…."sing this" type crap that they will have to face with the 19 Entertainment producers if they win.
Switch the voting to Dancing with the Stars style, half judges, half audience.
Perez is such a loser. He can't get anything right….the poor, obese thing. The problem isn't Paula. The problem is their flawed voting system enabling kids to vote over and over for the same contestant, which skews the results. The wrong contestants advance while the better ones are booted. That pisses people off and they get annoyed and stop watching. THAT'S the problem. It has nothing to do with Paula.

It's the contestants, stupid. That is, however, the judges fault…Voters vote on the final 24, but the judges pick the final 24 in the first place. Next year, let the Rachel Zevitas (opera girl ) into the finals!

There's no way in hell for example that Syesha has ever gotten enough votes to be in the top 3 this year. How stupid do they think we are?
There is no real star quality person this year. The show goes on TOO LONG. CUT more people each week and get it the hell over with. let the judges have say in the vote too- it's dumb that someone like Jason Castro stays in while Carly (mean looking as she is) goes home. The judges should have the right to cut one or use their vote as a "save", and the audience cut one. every week.
I think they need to make the vote of show as short as possible, not try and stretch it into an hour!
