AMERICAN MEDIA ANNOUNCES BONNIE FULLER TO STEP DOWN AS EVP AND CHIEF EDITORIAL DIRECTOR; TO SERVE AS EDITOR-AT-LARGE OF STAR MAGAZINE AND CONSULTANT TO COMPANY

NEW YORK, MAY 13, 2008 – American Media, Inc. (AMI) today announced that Bonnie Fuller, who has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Editorial Director since July 2003, will resign from those positions as of May 14, 2008. Going forward, Ms. Fuller will serve as editor-at-large of AMI’s Star magazine, and also will act as a consultant to the company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David J. Pecker.

"I am proud of the significant achievements of American Media’s celebrity and fitness brands over the past five years, and I am now ready for a new adventure," said Ms. Fuller. "The transformation of Star from a tabloid into a glossy magazine was unprecedented and has proven to be a great success. I am also proud of the redesigns of several other titles over the past few years. I have been fortunate to work with an exceptional group of talented editors and publishers, and am thrilled to continue my involvement with AMI through my role as editor-at-large at Star and consultant to David Pecker."

"Bonnie Fuller has been an important part of a team that has overseen a range of extremely successful editorial initiatives over the past five years," said Mr. Pecker. "I am pleased that we will continue to benefit from her journalistic contributions through her role as editor-at-large at Star and a consultant to the company."

Who? you ask? BONNIE FULLER - the woman who RE-INVENTED the entire American
Paparazzi Picture based magazine - she's the one that made re-made US WEEKLY then left US for STAR when she was offered over 3 MILLION DOLLARS a year by Pecker. But it turned out that Janice Min, who was Bonnie's assistant at US and who took over US WEEKLY after Bonnie left, may have been the actual genius behind US WEEKLY's success. STAR has never come close to competing with US WEEKLY or any of the other celeb news mags.

      isn't "editor-at-large" a euphemism for "fired"?

said Mr. Pecker. "I am pleased that we will continue to benefit from her journalistic contributions through her role as editor-at-large at Star and a consultant to the company."

… that sounds more like, ". . . bitch had an iron-clad contract for Big Money guaranteed over a certain time period — so i'll pay her and give her an important sounding title, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna let her continue to RUIN my Big Dream of owning a Successful Slick Celebrity News Magazine, dammit".

You can't expect many kind words when you've decided:
      1) To be a magazine editor (a job you pretty much have to be a bitch/bastard to do well - case in point Anna Wintour -she hasn't made any friends
2)The entertainment business and all its offshoots
      -Fashion Industry, celebrity culture, etc
are nasty, catty businesses for obvious reasons

Some people think they need to be a bitch to get stuff done. Some people also obviously don't deal well with high pressure jobs…Bonnie Fuller, if she was a bitch on the job is most likely one of them.

    25. mmm says – reply to this

If you are a bitch/bastard at work, you are a bitch/bastard in real life. You can't get a free pass just because it is work…you don't have two separate lives. There is no situation at work that warrants being nasty, mean-spirited or demeaning to people you work with. There are many successful people who have enough class to treat others well. Karma's a bitch, BF!

Seems like a lot of magazines use "editor-at-large" or "editor" as a glorified title for "writer." It's easier to give someone an inflated title than an inflated paycheck.
