Teen escapes attacker by biting his genitals
SALISBURY, N.C. — Salisbury police say an 18-year-old woman escaped an attacker by biting off part of his genitals.
The woman was walking along Maxwell Street near the County Club Neighborhood when the man jumped her and dragged her into nearby woods.
Police say the man forced her to perform a sex act. She refused and was beaten up.
He forced her again. Again, she refused and was beaten.
Then, police say the teen bit him hard enough to tear off a piece of his genitals.
"Oh my gosh, this is my neighborhood,” said neighbor Patti Heilig.
She walks the same area daily.
"If it can happen to that poor girl it can happen to anybody,” she said.
Karina Florian and Laura Stringfield typically walk Maxwell Street together. They say the question now is whether they should they carry mace in addition to bringing their dogs.
"Because it hits so close to home and we were here out and about last night,” Stringfield said.
Police say a similar attack happened months ago but it wasn't here and doesn't appear to fit any one pattern or person.
"We just hope they'll catch the guy before anything else happens,” Heilig said.
Police say they are checking local hospitals to see if a man has sought medical attention for the bite.
The teen who was attacked was taken to a hospital. Her condition has not been released.

I appreciate your enthusiasm for women and girls fighting back against their attackers, but the reality is that most women feel unable to do so when being raped. Every 12 minutes a woman is raped in this country. One out of three women and girls will be or have been sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. As a rape survivor, I know that I was not in a place to fight back. I felt as though if I let him do what he wanted, I would escape with my life. Most times it is acquaintances and friends that are our attackers. It is not our responsibility to change the mindset of attackers, it is our responsibility to figure out how to survive. Any rape survivor did the right thing in that moment because she lived to tell the tale. Sometimes surviving means fighting back, and sometimes it doesn't.

Re: 1 out of 3 – If more people like us would come out and actually takl about our experiences I think it would help a lot of young girls that this has happened to. Most are to afraid to come out and either press charges (if they know the person) or go to the police to try to find out who has done this to them. I go to High Schools in my area and talk about my experience. I don't know how much good it does but I know I have had more than one girl come to me with tears in their eyes and thank me for being so brave. I think I am doing the right thing. I also think the girl in this story done the right thing. If I had of had the chance I would have bitten my attackers completely off! I applaud this girl and I hope she realizes how brave she is.
