Hey, do you know that the women on the right picture, isn't pregnant though? The women back that then had to lean back because they were wearing so many layers of fabric if they stood straight up they would fall down. So, while leaning back it would, at least in this picture create the illusion that she is pregnant, although she is not.
haha too bad Arnolfini's new wife isn't pregnant yet. she is bunching up her dress to show she is ready to have children.

It's a commonly accepted belief, though, that the woman in the painting is not pregnant. The painting, rather, is symbolic of the woman's fertility and ABILITY to produce children in the future.

Haha that is brilliant! Although, the other posters are right, she probably isn't pregnant. Although she is wearing many layers, it was also very popular at the time for women to stuff their stomachs. It gave the illusion of having a huge baby bump. Add to the idea that it is a wedding portrait and it is safe to say that she probably wasn't pregnant! I am a fashion major and learned this in my class on the history of clothing.

Ellen D. mentioned that we'll look back on this day (gay marriage allowed in CA) and think that it was weird for gay people to not be able to get married, just as we today think about womens right to vote.
Can you imagine this couple, 600 years ago (before Islam, discovery of america, all european revolutions, two world wars… ) and still people say that it is not acceptable with sex/children before marriage.
