9-year-old girl's twin is found inside her stomach

A 9-year-old girl who went to hospital in central Greece suffering from stomach pains was found to be carrying her embryonic twin, doctors said Thursday.

Doctors at Larissa General Hospital examined the girl and surgically removed a growth they later discovered was an embryo about six centimeters (more than two inches) long.

"They could see on the right side that her belly was swollen, but they couldn't suspect that this tumor would hide an embryo," hospital director Iakovos Brouskelis said.

The girl has made a full recovery, he said.

Andreas Markou, head of the hospital's pediatric department, said the embryo was a formed fetus with a head, hair and eyes, but no brain or umbilical cord.

Markou said cases where one of a set of twins absorbs the other in the womb occurs in one of 500,000 live births.

The girl's family did not want to be identified, hospital officials said.

it is not that unusal. alot of women, with ultrasounds, find out they are carrying twins. A few weeks later, there is only one baby. The mother miscarries the one baby. Sometimes it is absorbed by the other baby like in this case. It reminds me of the South Park episode from years ago where it was I think the school nurse had her twin attached to her head.

It happens as it did to my niece and another lady I know. My niece was always sick with pains and stayed off school a lot. They finally diagnosed what it was and removed it from her fallopian tubes, it was the size of a grapefruit. And, it doesn't only happen in Greece.

It's a conditon called fetus infetu, and it is believed that sometimes the process of absorption of the second twin is brought on by environmental conditions - which Greece as of late has been known for. It isn't something to act like a child about and go EWWW over. I'm sure these girls are going to get enough shit from people over in Greece as is.

My mom is a nurse and works in the ICU, and has told me a story like this about ten years ago about a thirty something year old man who had the same stomach pains. His twin brother has been in his stomach and they removed the thing from him.
Once they took the twin out of the guy's stomach, it died immediately. But my Mother talked about how it had long fingernails and hair like a troll doll or something.
It must be CRAZY to have another person living inside of you like that. Especially when youre a man!

This is common - a friend of mine had it happen to her. They found it on an ultrasound. She was depressed afterward - said she felt like she lost something. Andy Garcia had his twin surgically removed from his shoulder. Tis true.
