Alternative rock may be down, but country music is UP!
So says AHITS Daily Double. They cite Goldenvoice promoter Paul Tollett, whose Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the end of April drew 30,000 fewer people than in 2007, while the following week's Stagecoach Country Music Festival (also a Goldenvoice production) more than doubled its size in its second year.
But, we think that it's hard to make this statement simply by comparing the two fests!
The attendance figures can't tell the whole story, right?
First, we hear from many that this year's Coachella line-up wasn't as strong as year's pasts. It kept many, at least those we know, from making the trek.
Plus, Coachella was in its ninth year this year, and it was only Stagecoach's second year.
You've gotta take the 'newness' factor into consideration.
And, lastly, country seems to be attractive to a wider demo range than 'alternative' music.
There are people like mommas and grandparents who would do the Stagecoach thing that wouldn't do Coachella!
Frankly, we think both suck. We hate HUGE festivals.

those 30 thousand people went to coachella to see RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. the numbers aren't low this year they were high last year. everyone and their mom wants to see rage live. and now they will never play again, and huge festivals SUCK.
Stagecoach was probably the best weeeknd of my entire life! It was pure insanity…..thousands of drunk people and awesome music. it was AMAZING.
I have personally attended Coachella every year for the past 4 years all except for this past year, and frankly because the lineup sucked!!!
coachella had 30,000 less people because the line up sucked. the line up the the year before was WAAAY better.

There was an ocean of difference between this year's Coachella lineup and last year's…I think that the most important aspect of the difference in attendence. I was thoroughly unimpressed. Some friends of mine went and said that Prince saved the day.

i went all 3 days to coachella again and it was amazing!! you can't beat pink floyd's crazy epic performance, fliers from the sky, and float away parade pig! prince was amazing, portishead destroyed everyone's mind they were so freaking brilliant, the verve sounded better than they did a decade ago, ranconteurs were spectacular, kraftwerk was ungodly, MGMT were phenomenal…. and i could go on and on… this year was a very britpop/european band fueled festival, and that's what i loved about it! anyone who didn't go because they didn't like the music only made it better for us (less people who knew good music, less hassle!)

Hmm…there also was a gay radeo in town the same weekend of stagecoach. So go figure they had a huge turn out. There were fake cowboys everywere. And frankly perez I love u and ur blog. Coachella was the shiz! It was my first year and was AMAZING!! This year there were alot of indie bands which i LOVE. they obviously dont draw huge crouds like rage or coldplay have in the past years. most def. will attend every year till im too old!
Coachella is BY FAR the BEST and undoubtedly the biggest music festival in the US. The sheer number of bands and stages that we have on site cover a wide range of music genres and acts, hence making the festival large in size just covering the ground and talent offered. That being said, we try to offer as much variety as we can into a 72-hour timeframe. Stagecoach is definitely by far the MOST prestigious country music festival simply because there aren't any large-scale country festivals that are run the way Stagecoach is. Most large country shows have craptastical production value and are usually found at state fairs, which is a far cry from the amazing event that we put on! I'm really curious to know WHY you hate large festivals…is it because we don't back you financially to be there or to "discover" or blog about certain labels' musical acts? For all the shit you talk and mudslinging you toss at everyone, I invite you to put your money where your mouth is and actually come to the festival and experience why Coachella IS indeed the most-acclaimed and BEST music festival in the US. Then should you feel differently, a statement such as that could actually have some merit and basis behind it. Perez you suck. What happened? You didn't used to be the toolbag you have morphed into….

Perez, I LOVE and your support of festivals like SXSW which showcase emerging bands. If you ever have a chance, check out Troy Andrews and Orleans Avenue. I lived in NO and he is mega talented.
