Disgusting. It might be a reaction to the fact that our culture is becoming more tolerant of gays, lesbians, bisexuals & transexuals and some people can't handle it… I don't know.

Well, I'll tell ya all, we aren't sitting back & taking it! I had a guy come after me with a knife as I was getting in my car. As many of us do now, I had a Louisville Slugger in my back seat. When he lunged at me I let him have it right in the temple. As he dropped the knife and fell to the ground convulsing, I called 911. "Self-defense", pure & simple the cops said. Now he needs someone to feed & dress him every day for the rest of his life & I feel GREAT about it! He wanted to kill me but got what HE deserved without the cost of a trial and incarceration! So come on assholes, I'm ready.

It would be interesting to see the actual statistics, and not just the 133% figure. Were the victims of these crimes targeted b/c of their sexual orientation or was their orientation not a motivation for the crime? If they were targeted, then that's horrible, but the statistics seem suspect.

I think poverty brings the worse out of society and the people that can turn this state are moving out in record numbers so they can get jobs and a future. i too am from michigan, and especially as someone who is an LGBTQ minor at umich these statistics are really disheartening, HOWEVER it is soo important to realize that every state, every region, every country has areas that are more accepting of "alternative lifestyles" (which is of course a completely arbitrary concept) and that are less accepting. we still need to make sure we pay attention to intolerance and violence that is occuring EVERYWHERE, even if it is less visible.

The state relied too much on the auto industry, and when it went sour, so did the economy. This has been happening for decades, and the Michigan economy is in a terrible position now. I am from michigan and I almost cant believe it. We have a large gay community in ferndale and theyre are clubs in the detroit area. I think things tend to get a little crazy at these clubs but I never thought they was gay bashing. I didnt think people mind at all. I think things are getting better.

I live in Lansing, MI and take it from me, it's not just the gays and minorities suffering, it's everyone. Someone on like comment 50 something said something about MI and auto-industry and out-sourcing, ect and they are right. We Michiganders are ALL starting to feel the pinch of times. Not only are crimes against minorities up, but so are crimes against everyone. Just yesterday two men (who btw are black) decided that they needed a way to make money so they set off on a string of four armed robberies in a populated part of town in the middle of the day right behind a police station!! If that is not the difinition of desparation, then I don't know what is. What other people living in other states need to understand is that times are tough, but they are much tougher in the "Great" Lakes State than in any other. Now I am not in any way trying to excuse this insane 133% increase in crimes against minorities and gays. Iam just trying to help myself understand how this beautiful state that has harbored my family for five generations, this state that has been my home for my whole life got like this. Where did we go wrong Michiganders? It's time for a change!

If you knew anything about economics you would understand that having other people do this low skill labor for us at a cheaper price creates job. Oh and Republicans typically are more educated, have higher IQ's, are married, etc. Michigan is in shambles because our state's budget is too big and there isn't enough money to continue providing welfare to millions of people who don't want a job and can't stop getting pregnant. Our state is so far into debt that they are no longer participating in the state funded Federal Student Loan program. If you're going to spout off these statistics, do some research first. Maybe celebrities in Hollywood are democrats, but you can't say they are representative of normal upper-class citizens.

Oh, and if McCain had been elected LAST time then our countries economy would be in so much better shape.

I go to Michigan State (in East Lansing) and the story about the 4 unarmed robberies is unfortunate but please don't start spewing lies about it. None of the articles in "The Lansing State Journal" or "The State News" ever make reference to the race of the 4 suspects. The only mention of color is that a "black four-door vehicle" was spotted at one of the scenes so unless you know the victims personally, PLEASE take your racism elsewhere!

I don't know how wide-spread throughout the state it is, but Ann Arbor and Royal Oak Michigan have wonderful thriving LGB communities and I have not seen or heard any episodes against gays in the media.
Right now Michigan is in the 5th year of a recession. 27000 people left the state last year alone. In Detroit they just revealed they have a 83% high school drop out rate and a Mayor who's affair cost the city millions in a whistle blower settlement to the cops who uncovered the improprieties.
I think the Free Press got tired of the same old bs and is trying the change the subject, and "report" on something else.

Did anyone actually READ the article? Did you see at the end of the article where it said "The reason for the increase may be due to more people coming forward to report incidents…" In other words, there MAY NOT BE ANY INCREASE in incidence at all, it may just be getting reported more! Hello!! This also does not mean that Michigan had the most hate crimes of any state, just the biggest increase year over year of any state. However, the group reporting the rise (Triangle) admitted that their increased outreach in 2007 may have resulted in increased reporting, so obviously the methods were NOT the same and therefore the numbers are not comparable. So it's ridiculous to label Michigan a hate mongering state based on this. Remember, there are 3 types of lies - lies, damn lies, and statistics.

The article said this is the highest rise i believe, which means that other states could still have a higher total. Please keep in mind when you are saying you hate everyone from michigan that not everyone from there hates gays. I live in michigan and i have nothing but respect for gays or lesbians. No matter what state you live in, there are going to be people who are ignorant but dont blame the whole state for it.

Listen up people. Anyone who thinks Michigan is an ultra-conservative state is blinded by ignorance. Have you not watched any of the elections? Michigan is a confirmed Blue state. Always has been, always will be.

And about this report.. are there really more gay/lesbian hate related harassment or crimes happening? Or just being reported? You must always be skeptical about statistics.

Lastly, I love Michigan. It is one of the most beautiful states with humble and loving people all around. All you haters can stay away from our amazing lakes!

Criss Angel Responds To Recording Of Altercation! Says Producer Provoked Him!

There are two sides to every story! Here's his!

In light of the audio recording released yesterday that featured Criss Angel threatening to knock out one of his producers, the illusionist's attorney, Ken Woloson, has released the following statement:

"Criss Angel was in the process of firing Joe Safuto on Wednesday when Safuto became abusive and Criss asked him to leave. Criss decided to fire Safuto in response to repeated complaints from co-workers and other magicians about Safuto's abusive and violent behavior and general ineptitude. Witnesses have attested that there was no physical contact and that Safuto very clearly was the antagonist. The audio released to the media is a snippet of a much longer conversation. We are exploring legal action against Mr. Safuto, including for his defamatory and illegal conduct."

Ouch! Sounds like he means business!
