Hypocrite!

Filed under: Awardz > Kenny Chesney

kennychesney.jpg

On Sunday night, Kenny Chesney criticized the American Country Music Awards (despite his win) for allowing fans to vote for the Entertainer of the Year award.

Chesney told reporters backstage, "I don't think it's right that they pick the one award that means the most, that all the artists sacrifice the most for."

According to reports, Chesney made clear Sunday night that his criticism was an industry complaint about the process for one award — not a dig at his fans or at the awards show overall.

It was the first time in the show's 43 years that the top prize was decided by a fan vote.

BUT, it's been revealed that Chesney played along with the industry and prodded his fans to pick him for the win!!!

Chesney's MySpace page still carried a large banner Monday urging fans to "bring it home for KC," with links to the academy's online page and messages from fans lower on the page.

Kinda hypocritical, dontcha think?

Its not being hypocritical at all. He is criticising the process. The process at the time was for fans to vote. He went for the win. Doesnt mean he had to like it. So he is now denoucing it. I think hes being honest about it and Im a big Kenny fan!

    18. Sandy says – reply to this

      18

Now we all know why Renee Zellweger dumped him. He's a tool.

    19. Courtney says – reply to this

      19

no not really because he wasn't upset at the fact that the fans voted as much as how many times they could vote. Just like American Idol they can vote as many times as they want. If some crazy fan voted 700 times it isn't a praise to the artist! That is what he was upsest at and to make the best award of the night a fan based award sucks for the artist because it isn't accurate!! Now Garth Brookes won 4 of those awards and same with Kenny but this one he feels doesn't count because the Academy changed the process!!

    20. Mila says – reply to this

      20

Yes and no. I highly doubt Kenny Chesney is the one running his myspace page.

Despite the controversy KC really is an awesome entertainer and well deserving of the award.

I am a huge fan of country music…and and HUGE fan of kenny! I voted for him, and i was excited to see him win! I think its great that it was fan voted…but kenny did not make it into a popularity contest like other artist up for awards. He wanted people to vote for him, but he never offered free songs or other things to get people to vote for him. He was trying to say that ACMs should be fan voted…but maybe not such and important award. Thats all the kenny was trying to say…he is proud of his fans for voting for him because, he truly is an ENTERTAINER and a CROWD PLEASER..this coming from a fan that has seen him 4summers and one more this summer! CONGRATS KENNY

No he said he didn't like what they had to do to try and win. I don't blame him…look at what the majority of what retards have to say on blogs all across the world. 29

Well, yes and no. He disagreed, but had to play the game as laid out, as wins translate into sales, but he and the others have a good point. Musical awards/Wins should not simply go to the most 'popular', youthful, trendy and good looking artist with the most young fans who can punch in the most repetetive votes on their latest piece of technological gear. Country music needs to be about far more than that. I agree with Chesney and the others.

    35. ExFVocals says – reply to this

      35

If you allow country music awards to become a popularity vote aka American Idol, winners will be dominated not by album sales or creative quality, but by the what, the age 10 to 20 demographic? That would be a farce on wheels. Voters choose on popularity and personal favorites, and not necessarily on the hardest touring and working polished 'entertainer' with a hard earned and phenomenal stage show. A great and complete 'entertainer' is comprised of many things.

    36. KC Forever says – reply to this

      36

He did not like haveing to SOLICIT votes when this award has ALWAYS been voted on by industry people and fellow musicians. We all know how america's voting track record is…look at American Idol…

Kenny deserved the win…not for internet votes, but for his BODY of work and committment to entertaining his fans…Entertainer of the YEAR!!!!

    37. Shit! says – reply to this

      37

Good move Renee for dumping his ass!

    38. Michelle says – reply to this

      38

Not at all! I agree with him that the Entertainer of the Year award should NOT be voted for by fans. This isn't American Idol. If they want to do a fan vote they should create a new award for that category. Kenny was only going along with what he had no control over, you can disagree with something without having to boycott the award all together.

      42

This is so dumb first of all he was critizing the way the award was handed out this year in 26 years the acadamy has given out this award!!!!! HE was mad because this award is the one that they judge on how hard you work and it's not a popularity contest!!!!! You all are crazy if you think that he wasn't going to do whatever he had to do to win this award! He works his ass off every year tours more then anyone and always has a hit record and song out! He deserves it more then anyone in country music right now and I agree with everything that he said why are they changing it now b/c they know they have to give it to him it they do!!!!! And Perez you are the most hypocritical person on the internet!!! One day you like someone the next you are making fun of them!! We should all get over our jealousy of someone and grow up!!!!!!

    47. Becky says – reply to this

      47

It's not hypocritical at all. He thought it should be given to the hardest working, most passionate, well deserved person. When it is fan voted, it turns into more of a popularity contest. I totally agree with him. EOTY isn't supposed to be about who gets the most votes, it's supposed to be about who deserves it more. Of course he is going to try to get the votes no matter if it is begging and pushing it on his fans. If that's what the Academy said it takes to win this year, why wouldn't he try to get the votes? Doesn't mean he has to agree with it. He deserved it more than any of the other people!

    48. bean says – reply to this

He has a valid point. If he were to be judged by his peers, then critically it would be an award worth having. Being judged by non-musicians doesn't amount to a hill of beans cause they don't know jackshit about music other than how to turn on the radio.

    60. stayathomemom says – reply to this

      60

Nope. Thisnk you have it wrong, he stated that he didnt like the award to come down to internet votes that might make this award seem trivial in anyway. We already have a show and an award show that the fans decide, lets keep those fun and the PROS can decide who entertained and who didnt.

It isn't a popularity contest.

At least Kenny wasnt somewhat buying votes by offering a free MP3 download if you voted for him like Rasscal Flatts. And for everyone saying that it was a 'slap in the face' for his fans, your wrong. All of Kenny's fans are supporting him for his comment, and agree with him 110%. Kenny loves his fans dearly and would never disrespect them. He was simply just saying that he did not feel the award should be fan voted and that it is the most important award and should be decided carefully. And it wasnt directed toward the fans in the first place,it was directed toward the industry. And this is not what Kenny said, its trying to be turned into something eles. Why dont you post what eles he said,he backed up himself and said what he meant and clarified that he wasnt talking about the fans?

I think you guys are all being a little narrow minded and only going off what the media is spinning his comments out to be.
He would have been ETOY whether it was fan voted or ACM voted. My god the man has played to over a million fans for the last 6 years.
As a longtime fan I don't take it as a slap in the face. I know what he meant and how important his fans are to him. Go to a concert and you'll understand what I mean.

    90. Krystal says – reply to this

      90

First of all Perez, you need to read the whole statement and post the whole statement instead of picking and choosing what you want to come across. I find it pretty pathetic that you think you can twist people's words to get a story to down someone. It's funny the only time you even mention country is to criticize it. I'm sick and tired of the only time I read about any country singers on entertainment sites like your own it's to talk about how horrible they are or when someone is in legal trouble. Country musicians are some of the most talented singers and Kenny Chesney is an amazing artist. You really need to go out and get a life.

    91. Anita says – reply to this

      91

It's not hypocritical at all. He is saying he disagrees with the process, an opinion he is entitled to. But of course he wants to win the award so he obviously is going to promote himself and request his fans to vote for him. It only makes sense to appeal to the vote of fans, even if he doesn't agree with it, so that he is still in the running.

    92. Key Lime says – reply to this

Guess all of you idiots who think Kenny is ungrateful need to check to see if you have a brain! Any person with a reasonable amount of sense knows that he was criticizing the industry. The Academy of Country Music Awards should not water down the validity of its awards in this way. Ballots should go to industry folk who know a thing or two, just as the Academy Awards do, with results tallied by a neutral accounting firm.
The awards should have and maintain some real meaning.

First, the myspace is run by the record company so they were the ones pushing the voting. He just released a statement to his fans regarding the comments he made on Sunday and explaining what he meant.

I'm a HUGE Kenny fan and he would have won regardless of who voted because he is an amazing entertainer whether you're a country music fan or not!

Musicians MySpace pages are rarely run by the musicians themselves. I doubt he had anything to do with the cheerleading.

Why don't you read everything he said, you have no idea what you are talking about! I voted for him, and I agree with everything he said. And for all of you that thinks he and his music sucks it's probably because you have never given it a chance, his music is amazing, tell me who else sells out stadiums summer after summer??? He is great to his fans, if you have never been to a show then you really shouldn't comment, as you have no idea what you are talking about. Maybe the media should report the whole story.

To ALL the Kenny defenders, and there are lots out there:

If Kenny was upset about ANY part of the process, he should have done several things:

      1. NOT post a link on his site
      2. Been public about his concerns before the event. Instead, he was sailing on his yacht for People magazine, among other things.
      3. Not accepted the award.

Kenny, you missed a great opportunity to speak up. Instead, you should have dealt with the Awards group privately, then gone public.
You lost a bit of cred there, cowboy.
