Juror Dismissed!
Opening arguments for the R. Kelly child porn case began on Tuesday.
However, a juror has already been dismissed from the proceedings!
Shortly before opening statements began, a juror was summoned by the judge after she complained that sitting on the panel would leave her unable to pay her bills.
The woman explained to the judge that she only has 30 hours of vacation time at her job and wouldn't be paid for serving on the jury after that time expires.
She says she'd be unable to pay attention to her jury duties because of concern over their financial implication.
That makes sense to us!
She's being replaced by one of four alternate jurors.
Guess this is going to be a loooooong (but surely eventful) trial!

Um, I'm pretty sure that it is law that your employer has to pay you even if you are on jury duty and they cannot force you to take vacation time. I live in Chicago, and I work in HR - That judge should know that. However, maybe her employer is being shady, and that can still cause emotional distress and could be reason enough to let her off the hook. In the meantime, someone needs to look into her employer's practices..

I call bull shizzle. I am an HR Director and while laws very from state to state, jury duty laws are basically uniform. Your employer cannot count jury duty against you. They have to pay you for the time off, however, if you get paid by the court (some courts pay a per diem to each juror) they can deduct your pay by the amount you were paid by the court.
So, it was a straight up lie unless she gets paid under the table.

Uhm, there is no federal law that requires paying anyone for jury duty. There are some states that have a law that they do but not all states and not all jobs as most job related laws pertain to those businesses with more than 10 employees and to those who are full time employees. I suggest y'all look things up before spouting off nonsense. There is no such law in Illinois.
