What's In A Name???

wenn1648933.jpg

It seems Nas has caved in to the big man.

The rapper's new album was set to be released under the title N—-r, which cause a lot of debate and uproar when it was announced last year.

Now, a rep for Dej Jam is confirming that Nas has changed the much talked about title.

The new name?

It'll just be titled Nas.

The original name caused such a stir that large companies were threatening not to sell the CD in their stores.

Island Def Jam Group Chair, Antonio "L.A." Reid, is denying reports, though, that the name change had anything to do with him or pressure from the label.

Reid says, "We stand firmly behind and beside our artists with pride and with pleasure. Anything Nas wants to do, I completely stand beside him."

But in a recent interview just last week, Nas admitted that he was once again facing pressure from the high execs.

He says, "Everybody is trying to stop the title…. Record stores are gonna have a problem in this day and time selling a record with that title. Who knows what's gonna turn out and be on that title? Who knows what that title will be?"

And in a new statement, Nas adds, "It's important to me that this album gets to the fans. It’s been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that, creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It's that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it."

The album currently titled Nas, for now, is set to be released in sores on July 1st.

Give me a fucking break! We live in a society where rich white kids use the N word because it makes them cool. Everybody wants a ghetto pass but they won't let Nas release an album with that name??? There are books with that name…the music industry sucks, what a bunch of hypocrites!

  14. Bella says – reply to this

He should be allowed to call it whatever he wants. Its his album! People get offended by everything now adays. People need to chill its just an album title! So stupid!!!

Nas your so stupid..great way to try and set back blacks forty years big Dumba$$….I agree with joyce he needs to re-read his history books and realize that word in no shape or form should be commercialized and glorified. Nas just for thinking that title for the album would be good or contraversial you sir are A Ni@@er

He performed at UCSB's Xtravaganza on Sunday and was absolutely phenomenal. Even on Sunday he was plugging the album by the original title. I think for him, it's a means of uniting all races. That's what I got from his explanation. It didn't seem to be a means of merely dropping the n word to cause controversy. Anyway, yeah he was fantastic. I'm more of a Jay-Z kid most of the time but he's a hell of a performer.

  21. Thinking Forward says – reply to this

    21

That's a shame to hear. He should not be thinking of who is going to sell it rather than sending out a strong and inspirational message.

He is not setting anyone back. He is stirring the pot and getting people to talk and THINK. He is moving forward and thinking a head.

We should all take heed and do the same.

  24. Courting Trouble says – reply to this

    24

That's probably a wise decision. Any album would be better remembered for its creative content, rather than its controversial title. If it's OK for one to say it, it would ergo be OK for all to say it. Hypocrisy = double standard.

  25. ME says – reply to this

    25

People say Nas sucks cause his rap is different…….. you have to be a deep thinker to feel Nas' music. Its not that typical Soulja Boy, Laffy Taffy, BULL. If you like social, concisous, and political rap, you'll like Nas.

And to Joyce, I'm sure he knows what the "definition" of the word is. However, for most Blacks its sooooooooo much more than a definition.

  26. Liz says – reply to this

    26

If he's a cowars for changing the name, how come you're censoring the word as weel?

  27. Jade says – reply to this

    27

Is he living 100 years ago in the music industry? Forward artists release online, build a buzz and then sell "CDs" or files. If he called a song "N" (the whole word) and said something actually transformational that will further empower taking back this word AND then when he did sell the actual CD people would buy it as a pop-culture collectible. Everyone knows CDs don't sell anymore and music industry people DO NOT call the shots anymore. This one would if marketed right. He is showing he is not strong enough to stand up to the industry, lead a transformational movement and that he does know how to see a golden egg in all that he laid. That's a shame. But if I were a musician or a music industry person I would jump on this;-) Actually…I am one of these so um..

  28. Keri says – reply to this

    28

cant wait for this album to drop, usually when people say they dont like him it's because they dont like conscious music..and that's ok..but you can never deny this mans talent.

  29. Keri says – reply to this

    29

I don't know why people get offended by the word, it doesn't mean anything..only if you allow it. I'm black..if u wanna call me the "n word" I don't give a damn because I know what it means. By people giving that word meaning it becomes more powerful than it is.

It always cracks me up when journalists, commentators, and gossip rags use terms like "the 'N' word" and "n****r."

Hey, 'tards, every time you use those terms, the person reading it automatically applies the ACTUAL WORD in their minds. You're not helping anything; you're just flaunting your self-absorbed "enlightenment."

What's even funnier is that, the more institutions use terms like "the 'N' word," the term itself becomes the same as the word it's meant to replace.

Sheer idiocy. If Nas was wise and really wanted to make a point, he'd re-title his CD "The 'N' Word." THAT would be high-larious!

By the way, I've decided that the "N" word will now stand for "narcoleptic." After all, narcoleptics NEVER get insulted. Why should racists hog all the "'N' word" fun???

Freedom of speech doesn't sell, just Music company cookie cutters do.
And yes most of the rappers are popped from the cookie cutter and told what to say and how to act

You people don't realize that he's under a major label, regardless of his longevity with his label, he still has to abide by the contracts he signs. Also this man is one of best rappers EVER!!! (BIG UPS TO QUEENS - REPPIN' SOUTH JAMAICA), and he has a large fan base, and what kind of artist are you if you have no outlet to sell you art work? So it's an understandable move to change the title. No one stopped and said to themselves "hey maybe he has a specific message about the N word in one of his songs". Don't be so quick to call someone else ignorant, when they are one of the most highly respected, and prolific rappers of our time!!!
