We're gonna have to plan a trip to Portland real soon!

Hottie commissioner Sam Adams was elected mayor of Portland on Tuesday, in an easy victory over businessman Sho Dozono.

Adams' win makes him the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city.

"I'm running not to be a gay mayor, but a great mayor," he said after delivering his victory speech. "But I'm very cognizant, very aware that I'm the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. That's a real honor."

Now, hopefully we can overturn Oregon's IDIOTIC ban on gay marriage, and Sam can lead the fight for equality!

Congrats.

Perez, you should totally come to Portland. You'll love the fresh air, kind people and yes, Mayor Adams!

  19. Cara says – reply to this

    19

WTF does being gay have to do with being a mayor? I don't need to know that he's gay. That should never have been part of his campaign and it's disgusting that he was running on those issues. He should instead stick to the issues of his area, not who he is sleeping with. Geesh, and people wonder why the gays are disrespected in politics. I'm sorry but the political arena is NO place to discuss sex lives for anybody.

Great quote from Mr. Adams about being mayor of the biggest city in a state where gay marriage is not legal:

"With the position of mayor comes life and death authority and responsibility in running a police force, emergency preparedness system and fire departments," he said. "But gay folks still can't be trusted to be married."

Once again, why is it an "event" to you whenever something is in the news that announces which gender someone prefers to stick his dick in?

That is like a straight person celebrating because a straight guy won an election somewhere - THINK ABOUT IT.

    Idiot.

Neil Giuliano, the current President of GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), was the openly gay Republican Mayor of Tempe Arizona. He was elected in 1994 and served until 2004. While Tempe may not be a huge city, it's proximity to Scottsdale and Phoenix as well as it being the home of Arizona State University, one of the largest Universities in the country, make Tempe a pretty high profile city.

    Re: Cara
Do you really think being gay is about just a persons sex life or who they sleep with? Some people are so narrow-minded. So I guess being hetrosexual makes you hetrosexual because you are banging a straight dude. Pretty lame definition of being gay dont ya think.

    65

    *OMG*
Why do you have to insert sexual orientation into (almost) everything you right about any more! Nothing is ever about just what it is-It's always about the artist/celebrity being GAY or the GAY affiliation or which participant YOU think is GAY and not coming out. Perez you have evolved into this big GAY propagandist. This whole website pretty much sucks at this point. The purpose has changed and my idea of entertainment has not. Just because your GAY doesn't mean we all want it shoved down our throats on a daily basis. Get over yourself and give us what we want, good gossip.

  66. Amber says – reply to this

Back in the 90's Mayor Roxanne Qualls was/still is a lesbian. She never made the statement while she was running, but everyone knew. She made no bones about hiding it in social outings. On a side note. She was one of the best mayor's Cincinnati ever had, including Jerry Springer.

    UMMMM?
I know Rhode Island is not a huge State, but the MAYOR of the States CAPITOL CITY is an OPENLY GAY MAN! Mayor David Cicilline was first Elected to Office in 2002, and was Re-Elected in 2007..
I know Oregon is closer to where you are, but, I really think you should take a more in depth look into your fact checking before you make such a bold statement.

  79. canttalkcockinmouth says – reply to this

  83. Butters says – reply to this

    83

What, what? In the butt. I say, what, what? In the butt!

Can you see it now. An army of gaybo's marching across Oregon. Taking over the world, just so long as they don't break a fingernail or their daisy-chain!

  84. carl says – reply to this

    84

Well, we'll see if the gay mayor can tackle tough problems like crime, illegal immigration, decaying infrastructure, wasteful spending, tight budgets, etc. etc. etc. If he's making gay issues his focus, it's going to be a giant disaster.

  85. Ben says – reply to this

    85

Sam's going to make an excellent mayor.

And, for reference, Harvey Milk was not San Francisco's mayor. He was a Supervisor at the time of his death.

  86. Courtney says – reply to this

    86

I'm seconding what the others have said about the Mayor of Providence being the first openly gay mayor. And YES everyone, he came into the race openly gay so…he would be the first openly gay majoy to be elected in a major American city.

  87. Holler at My Hometown! says – reply to this

    87

As always, the rest of the nation needs to CATCH UP WITH PORTLAND. People bike everywhere, public transportation is free in many places and goes EVERYWHERE - there is health care for those who can't afford it - and yes, Sam Adams is mayor. Oh, and the food is some of the best in the country and chefs from all over the world go to open restaurants in P-town. Local and organic? Of course.

    Portlanders WALK THE WALK, y'all.

The rest of the nation (read: THE SOUTH) needs to quit making Curious George t-shirts like it's 1935 and get with the damn program!

p.s. Tempe, AZ has a gay Republican mayor, I believe, but the public transportation there SUCKS…

  88. julia says – reply to this

    90

Portland has ALWAYS been full of nothing but idiots! Believe me, I've been there many times and per capita, they have more than their share of morons than any other single city in the country!

  91. Ally says – reply to this

    91

first of, Harvey Milk was never the mayor of San Fransisco…. he was the commissioner. Second, Sam Adams never used his sexuality in his campaign. He is just known as someone who fought for gay rights and happens to also be gay. As a Portland voter and a Sam Adams supporter I think he is going to fight even harder for gay rights. And no, he was not the first openly gay man to win a mayor bid.

  92. fuckface says – reply to this

  96. dan says – reply to this

    96

get your facts straight..he is far from the first openly gay mayor!!! a simple google search would tell you differently!

  97. read ALL the words says – reply to this

    97

Okay, he is the first OPENLY (as in, we knew he was gay when we voted for him) gay MAYOR (as in mayor, not city supervisor), of a MAJOR (lots of people) US city. Portland has a population of 568,000 while Tempe, Providence, and Cambridge all have around (or less than) 175,000 people. Not even comparable.
So before you dwell on the FACTS, why don't you take a second to actually read what is being said?
Unfortunately our wonderfully liberal state doesn't seem to want gay marriage by definition. But we do have domestic partnership laws giving most "marital" rights to same-sex couples (such as insurance benefits).

  98. kalia says – reply to this

    98

Okay…I'm all for gay rights, etc. But ENOUGH, Perez. Every article anymore is about gay this or that. I come to this sight for fun celeb news, not to hear about who is gay, who is straight bullshit. Yes…we know you are gay. WE get it.

  99. Attitude Dude says – reply to this

    99

Gavin Newsom? San Fransico……..I think you be a dumb-ass-fag! And I'm straight!

  100. PDXChik says – reply to this

    100

Sam Adams is more concerned with bike laws in Portland than he is with gay marriage in Oregon - domestic partnerships are allowed here…
