Embracing The V

oprahrules.jpg

For 21 whole days, Oprah is going vegan.

No meat. No fish. No dairy.

Nada!

The queen of talk was reportedly inspired by Kathy Freston's book Quantum Wellness and says, "this 21-day cleanse gives me a chance to think about [eating] differently and see what my attachments are to certain kinds of foods – and what I'm willing to do to change.

You can keep up with Oprah's vegan experiment on her blog.

So far, she says, "Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying."

Have fun on that, O, but we need our chorizo to feel happy.

Salchichon!

Oprah will never make it the whole 21 days. She is a food addict and will need her comfort food in about 2 days. Although she will claim she stayed vegan the whole time. As for the chorizo, the soy version is killer yah for soyorizo. Chorizo is mostly glands from the pig and it tastes good but I cannot eat that anymore. Hypothalomous glands make you fat.

Oprah sucks. Her show about this will probably air with her in a puppy fur coat and panda boots. She'll eat a baby seal. Then nuke a gay whale for Jesus. I wish she would just retire to that whole town she bought in the midwest where Steadman is being held

    37

Soyrizo is great. Did you know there is cartilage, brains, intestines in real chorizo? Look at the ingredients. I've never eaten it since.

Yay for Oprah, always trying out new things. No doubt she'll lose a ton of weight.

Must be easy to go vegan when you have a personal chef who specializes in vegan cuisine. I'd like to see her try it while having to cook the meals herself.

  41. Mary B. says – reply to this

    41

Wow, I think this is super news. It is a great, permanent way to lose weight, instead of a "diet." Not to mention all the animals she'll save. I've never been a big fan of Oprah until her show on puppy mills and dog breeders, now this. I wish her all the best with this, and she is setting a good, healthy example for her fans.

I'm actually doing it too. It’s going well.

The 21 day body cleanse, also excludes, caffeine, sweets, nicotine, and alcohol; along with your before mentioned meat, fish and dairy.

Now that cuts like everything out. No meat is a little hard though, because dad made ribs the other night, and those are my fave, so I had to cave and have one, but other than that I’ve been doing great, and I feel great.

  49. xuszerep says – reply to this

    49

I went vegan for almost two months and couldn't handle it. Red meat, chicken, fish, and dairy are my friends… but in moderation.

Anyway, it's also easier to go vegan when you have a chef that cooks for you all the time.

Ps, Dear Oprah, I've lost respect for you because of your lame 2 day Tom Cruise Ass licking fest… It was an embarrassment and made you look like a fool.

  50. Ashley says – reply to this

Yeah…it'd be easy to eat clean when you have the best chefs around preparing your meals…and not having to buy store name brand products!!

There she goes again! This monster that is Oprah, can not stand to be away from the lime light. She thinks she's gods gift to manking. I can't stand what a fucking hypocrite she is.

She is fat!..I live in Chicago and I've seen her in the city, you'd be amazed what her people will do to a camera to make her look sort-of slim.

Now she wants to be a vegan because it is the "IT" thing to do these days. She has people that make her food and wipe her ass, of course it will be easy for her.

it's easy to go vegan/organic when you are RICH, can afford nutricious food, and have your own personal short-order chef. not so easy when you are working class and drive past the dollar menu at mc donald's on your way home from a day of hard labor.

Veganism isn't difficult or daunting (even for those of us without having personal chefs and mattresses stuffed with Cash). Vegan food is easy and super cheap too! I've been vegan for 6 years now, it's hard at first but just like anything else you get used to it. Perez, you should go try some Soyrizo. I'm sure you'll be able to tell the difference but at least you can feel good about not eating animal flesh, eww!

Plus, you're anti fur, how can you eat meat?!

  80. Missy B. says – reply to this

    80

I hope she can stick with it. I think she'll have trouble restricting so much so fast. It might be better to go vegetarian first, then vegan, then no caffeine.

But like other posters said, with a chef it will be much easier for her. I wish her all the best of health with her new diet, it sounds great. There are so many wonderful foods that are healthy. I have no doubt that after a few weeks the greasy, meaty ones will taste rotten to her. I hope she has a show after the 21 days to tell us how it went and how she felt.

yaay! Go Oprah!! hopefully this opens the eyes to a lot of people. it's not only healthier for the environments but also for our souls and the souls of the billions of tortured and viciously murdered living beings on this earth, and it's good for the environment. i've gone vegetarian for almost 2 months and haven't missed a thing!

  82. Big Red says – reply to this

    82

I was a strict veg for 15 years and now I eat seafood occasionally. To say I have hippe tendencies would be an understatement. However, I think Oprah has lost her freakin mind. She's going on a "cleanse" because of some brain dead socialite? How about having a nutritionist on the show? Or have Molly Katzen on the show to make some of her awesome family friendly veg meals. Instead so offers up crazy soy heavy menus on her website that require ingredients and preparation that 95% of people can not possibly manage and/or afford. The meal plan recipes on her site require white truffle oil, cashew cheese, wheat-free tamari, kombu, wheat & gluten-free bread, oyster mushrooms….. I think it's great to attempt to be more conscious about eating but the big O is big out of touch with the average American. How about teaching her audience easy, inexpensive and satisfying ways to reduce their meat consumption? Oh but wait… that would make too much sense. She can take her "Aniseed flavored spirit (try Herbsaint or Pernod)" and shove it.

  83. mjn says – reply to this

    83

Re: Vegan – Do you get a complete protein from these foods? I have been thinking about making a bigger change, since I don't eat much meat any way. I guess it takes a bit of time to change over your kitchen stash…personally, I don't have handy the stuff in the recipes!! That is probably the biggest obstacle to most people making a big change.

  84. sarah the vegan says – reply to this

    84

    nice!!!!

but…this should not be about a "diet". It is about compassion.

if you REALLY knew what was in your milk, your eggs, LOOKED INTO what exactly you were eating, there would be more vegans in the world.

sadly that will never happen. boo.

I saw the show and have started the 21 day cleanse as well. Its not JUST going without fish, meat and dairy. The cleanse also requiers you to not have ANY SUGAR, GLUETEN, or ALCOHOL on top of the no ANIMAL PRODUCTS. Now, I do realize i have started this on memorial day weekend of all weekends BUT i plan to stay strong. I started my day with a small cup of steel cut oatmeal and a bannana and am now muching on a 1/3 cup of unsalted, roasted cashews with a nice glass of water with lemon.

I am excited to see what this cleanse brings. I already have a headache from no coffee. i'll update back if there is a way to do that.

    cheers

I personally find lately eating more veggie foods to be easier on my digestive system… I don't feel so weighed down or heavy… however… I am not a soy person, in the bean or tofu department so to cut out fish or other animal proteins is not a part of my equation — I love my fish and seafood a lot to give that up…
    -
But if I had a chef working from my home every day… I would absolutely do what o is doing… just make sure that they know how to get the right level of protein in the diet that would be great…

Good for Oprah for doing something that everyone should try. I've been vegetarian for 12 years and am making the transition to becoming vegan. It's definitely something that I'm easing into, because I'd tried it in the past before, and I never maintained it. Of course, Oprah will have her well-qualified chef helping her out with crazy ingredients, which is a pity. She should stick to finding basic recipes that anyone can make and be happy with. Check out vegweb.org for great vegan recipes that aren't ridiculous if you're really interested in trying plant-based cuisine. It can be done!! :)
