Dealer Offers Free Gun With Car Purchase
BUTLER, Mo. — A local car dealer is holding a controversial promotion involving guns.
Max Motors in Butler is offering anyone who buys a car the choice of $250 in gas or a free semi-automatic handgun.
"Like I say, it's a choice — protection or gas," said Walter Moore with Max Motors.
Moore said he came up with the gas or guns promotion.
"We got high gas prices, theft, carjackings, innocent people getting hurt," Moore told KMBC's Chris Nagus.
So far, the handgun is a more popular choice.
"Right now were running 80 percent toward the gun," Moore said.
"Love guns, we all need to have guns," said Jerry Hertzog, who was buying a new truck. "Guns or gas or fuel, I'll take the gun anytime."
But the idea isn't popular with everyone. One viewer told KMBC that he believes the promotion is dangerous.
"I don't understand what's the bad idea. Telling people they have a right to protect themselves," Moore said.
Moore said most of his customers already own weapons.
"I get in a vehicle to bid a trade, there are guns in the seats, guns in the back windows. Everybody has a gun — there's no backlash," Moore said.
Moore said the dealership will hand the customer a certificate to get the gun, but you must pass a background check.
The local police chief said he is OK with the promotion as long as the weapons aren't handed out at the dealership.

Wow.Being from Canada i really don't get the hard on people in the U.S have for guns.I live in a city of 6 million people and we had 80 murders last year. That's a tenth of what most U.S city's with less population had. Does anyone even have one clue as to why our Founding Fathers put the 2nd Amendment into the Constittution? It wasn't for hunting or being able to defend ourselves from simple burglars or murderers. The 2nd Amendment was put into the Constitution because the Founding Fathers knew that men are men and government leaders can become corrupt. And because of this they knew that the People had to be able to defend themselves from their own government if it became too powerful. The comment about Hitler and Stalin taking away gun rights is exactly right and that's how they were able to murder millions of people. How's Australia's crime rate since guns were outlawed? The city I live in it is a law that all home owners MUST OWN a gun. Since this law was enacted the crime rate went down. And if you think I'm bullshitting then look up Kennesaw, Georgia and find out for yourself. Now, take a look at Washington D.C. where handguns are banned. Crime rate through the fucking roof!!! Well think about it, no gun purchase, equals less gun production (there will be some for the careers such as police, etc. etc. that require it), and thus it is harder to acquire a gun.
Will criminals still get guns? Yes but it will be a hell of a lot harder to.
While it's easier to get drugs (cultivating, getting the chemicals, etc), gun production is a bit more complicated. If you mess it up, you have a faulty gun, and thus the threat of the weapon is greatly reduced.
Also, the only thing guns are used for are protection (which I can almost guarantee, few situations will allow you the time/mobility to access said gun, considering it isn't in your hand 24/7) and hunting, which is a waste in itself unless permitted/asked by the government.

I find it amusing that everyone can blame a gun for the level of violence in the U.S. It really has nothing to do with the guns. It is the person holding it that is responsible for their actions. It's the gangs in the streets, the hatred of men for the color of their skin. A gun does not track you down and kill you in cold blood. But I guess it is easier to throw foul language out there call people names and not really touch on the point.
The guns or gas is a promotion. They dont hand out a gun to anyone. But if you had read the last sentance of the article you would know that wouldnt you. We have 13 guns in the house. 3 of them are collectors items never to be fired. My 10 yo daughter owns her own gun and she knows she can not go out shooting without an adult. My 7 yo son is the same. It doesnt make us rednecks, hicks or fools. We use them for sport. Have them for protection and treat them with respect.
