I thought that the movie had a lot of imperfections, but I still enjoyed it overall. About Shia, I thought that the character was not especially written well, and that Shia made the most of what he was given to work with. BUT - I Honestly don't see Shia as the successor to Indy (as immortalized by the charismatic Harrison Ford). Shia would be a perfect sidekick in future Indy films, but he is COMPLETELY wrong for the lead part. He should build his career with showy roles like the upcoming Eagle Eye and Y The Last Man.
