The death of Kanye West's mother, Donda, has encouraged physicians and lawmakers to call for greater protections for patients undergoing cosmetic surgery, according to a new report.
In the U.S., such surgeries are increasingly done outside hospital settings in outpatient clinics, where a doctor can avoid rigorous review.
And, with the number of cosmetic procedures overall on the increase, it's almost a matter of public health that something be done.
In 2007, there were 11.7 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, a 59% increase over 2000.
Y'all, if you're going to have something done, make sure you're in good hands!
If Donda's law is passed, doctors performing plastic surgery would be required to give patients full physicals before operating on them. That shady Dr. Jan Adams did not.

so sad that kanye's mother died - and i agree, they really need to have greater protection for patients! definitely makes one think twice about simply going somewhere for what many think may be 'simpler' cosmetic procedures. there are dangers everywhere, especially from unlicensed practitioners!
Donda West is dead because she didn't LISTEN, she was too damn vain and cocky. Stop blaming Dr. Jan for Donda's ignorance. All the surgery in the world wouldn't have helped her ugly ass

Actually, she was refused by a TOP plastic surgeon, because she had heart problems. SHE DIDN'T LISTEN!!!!! So she went to another surgeon who would do it, MONEY TALKS!!!

how come nobody mentions the fact that Donda did go to other doctors, who did in fact give her physicals and told her she should not have the surgery…. she went and sought out a doctor who would do the surgery for her anyway…

It would also help NOT to do lipo, tummy-tuck, boob-lift, neck, face, eyes, forehead, etc., all done at the same time. Good doctors do that in increments. And good patients have more patience and realistic expectations—they don't gorge on one visit to the plastic surgeon like they're at a metaphorical all-you-can-eat buffet.

Unfortunately, no number of visits was ever going to make Donda West look like Angela Bassett or Whitney Houston (at her best).
I love it when some random "celeb" has something happen to them and congress suddenly listens, ignoring the people that actually vote for htem, the thousands of other people who've had problems with lax regulation on plastic surgery….but when some woman who has some "celeb power" ignores other physcians advice becuase of her heart condition and pays a shady plastic surgeon to do the surgery, knowing the risk…..they suddenly have listening earts. Congress are a bunch of disgusting white pigs who only try to serve themselves with no regard to regular people.
This woman died for VANITY.

Explain what you mean by "outpatient" because I have had a surgery and a procedure (not cosmetic) in an outpatient ambulatory clinic (in & out) that was like a hospital surgical unit. In fact, it was a part of the hospital but was offsite and was my procedure was considered outpatient. I would not hesitate to have surgery there again. Do you mean, like in a Drs. office?

The bottom line is that his mother DID NOT disclose her full medical information. That is why other doctors were unable to operate on her. I work for a plastic surgeon and people ALWAYS try to disclude surgery information. Hellloooo it's your life people!! Dr. Jan Adams is a fine doctor….

if you're going in for plastic surgery… you're choosing it, lets worry about the people who need real help with real surgeries.
it's very sad that Kayne's mother passed but it's even sader that all the other people who have passed on because of surgical mistakes. Everyone has a choice and obviously she didn't listen to better judgement. But to have a law named after her? How much is that going to cost?
Crazy, no one's paying attention to the fact that her autopsy concluded she died of heart disease and through no surgical error on the part of Dr. Adams. Now he may have other legitimate cases against him and be a total creap in real life, none of us really know, but in this particular case he was in fact cleared of any wrongdoing. And then there's the fact that Dr. West, a supposedly well educated and intelligent woman, was told "no" by several top doctors and doctor-shopped around until she found someone to take her. Supposedly she lied about her medical history to Dr. Adams and that is why he ultimately accepted her. Sorry, but putting all emotional sympathy for her death aside, this is not a woman who should have a law like this named for her. Let's focus on helping people who need real surgeries afford them and protecting the victims of true negligence.

Whoa now! As far as Dr West's death goes, it certainly was a tragedy, but in her case it was most probably preventable! She was told by more than one doctor that she needed some medical workup and clearance before they'd do surgery even in a hospital setting. Dr West bucked the system and went with that Oprah clinic doctor, putting her fate in her own hands.

Tragic as her death was, Dr West was given good, solid medical advice and she chose to ignore it, probably sealing her fate.

However, as far as the tighter laws on stand-alone surgery clinics go, it can only help.

I had comestic work done outpatient and I am glad I did not have to
go through a hospital. You are supposed (or are generally encouraged to) talk to your family doctor before even
seeing a plastic surgeon anyway…but Kanye probibly just went around that for some dumb reason. It sucks that his mother died and I do not wish it upon anyone, but what makes his case that much more special?

We're passing legislature on how to make cosmetic surgery more safe, yet NO ONE in our government is doing anything about the outrageous gas prices and how people can't afford to put gas in their cars to get to their jobs, or can't afford oil to heat their homes. I work for plastic surgeons and most people shop for a surgeon strictly by price. They don't care whether surgery is done by a board certified surgeon or whether it will be done in a hospital or a strip mall. They just want the lowest price. As my husband is fond of saying — "the average American is an idiot" — as evidenced by so many of the uneducated, foul comments that appear on this website.
