Australian diver Matthew Mitcham has just come out as a gay man.

The 20-year-old gold medal hopeful will be representing his country in Beijing this summer.

He'll be the first openly gay athlete from Australia to compete in the Olympics.

Re: Chad – Read his story. He suffered depression (most likely from being closeted and being surrounded by bigots ) and dropped out of his sport for a while. His Partner/ signifigant other was a huge support for him and helped him get back on his feet. He got back into his sport and is now a gold medal hopeful for Australia. COOL story

Jai Taurima was the long jumper and Ji Wallace was the Trampolinist. Both won silver in Sydney Olympics, but Jai Taurima is straight (as far as we know!) and yes, Ji Wallace is gay, but not sure if he was open about it AT that Olympic Games.

In any case, it's not really Perez's error if Matt isn't the 'FIRST OPENLY GAY AUSTRALIAN ATHLETE TO COMPETE AT THE OLYMPICS'… he's just reporting the information directly from the Australian tabloids…
