Scarf Controversy

What's in a scarf????

Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.

Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).

Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.

But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.

Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

What do U think of the controversy?

RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

      Re: Janett

Janett your advice could well server everyone. Not just those in the states. As I've read some pretty ignorant statements people made in here about those in the states as well. ;)

Pretty funny that you liberals who get all freaked out when someone says something neutral about gay people, black people, Latino people or your politicians, but when something that truly offends a whole religion (ie-Jews who see the keffiyeh as a symbol of Arab terrorism) THAT people should just calm down about! How about, if it doesn't offend you, you just shut the hell up and let people have their own sensitivities? Thanks!

Jo you hit the nail on the head. As I pointed out about those in here that made fun of those that got upset, probably were the same people that threw fits over ornamental 10 commandments that were displayed for no reason for OTHER than decoration made big fusses about that.

So the moral of the story for them is, it's only ok to be over-sensitive when it's for YOUR side.

I also find it funny that these same people are more critical about Christianity or Christians than they are Muslims, even though that religion teaches even more "hate" as they put it.

I come on here anymore just to laugh at the silliness.

There is obviously an illusory correlation existing between a scarf and "terrorists". It would be great if people could remove their heads from their butts and start trying to do good in the world…like ending world hunger. seriously.

      Re: julia

Julie were you also throwing the same fits when they removed the 10 commandments in certain places that was only there for decoration for no reason other than some people were being over-reactionary?

      I hope so.

Re: Angel said something mentally retarded: OMG Americans are Mentally Retarded

America is just a melting pot of other people's countries hon. We are just a mirror of the world. And usually what people don't like about other people, are the same things they don't like about themselves. Think about it sweety and get back to me. No seriously, actually think about it this time.
