Governor David Paterson of New York has told state agencies and organizations that it must start recognizing and respecting same-sex marriages performed in states and countries where they are legal, like California or Canada.
In other related news, new surveys show that MOST Californians support gay marriage.

Same sex marriages? No. They are speaking about Civil Unions. Which I am ALL FOR. The Gov shouldn't recognize marriages at all. You know the whole Gov not mixing with religion thing. Everyone that wants the GOVERNMENT to see a couple as legit, should required to get civil unions.
If someone then wants a marriage ceremony they can do so on their own.
This way, both sides of the fence are "happy" and no ones rights are trampled on.
My only question is, where does it stop? Or does it?
Don't get me wrong, I am ALL FOR treating everyone equally. But there is going to be a point in time where we are going to have to as a society draw the line sometime.

Marriage is a religious term. Call it Civil Unions and I am ok. Give the same treatment and perks, but call it Civil Union. If you push to call it Marriage, you will only piss people off. California is an aberation and it will still be overruled eventually. Most of America does NOT support the homosexual lifestyle. It goes directly against core Christian values. Hollywood is completely out of touch with midstream America. Homosexuality is not a race. That is an insult to blacks who fought for their rights and won a hard fought battle.

Not all religions are based on the bible, but most countries still refer to civil unions as marraige. Additionally, not all interpretations of your bible are the same. I mean were we monkeys or riblets. Just saying…In the 60's many claimed it against God and nature to marry interatally. At one archaeic point, it was herecy yo omply that the earth was anything but flat. This is really about cultural awareness and evolution.
As someone who was raised believing that "marriage" is between a man and a woman, I oppose to this. However, if lesbians and gay men want to marry each other, let them do it. I really don't care either way. I say, "Let them have their fun." Let them taste the joy and bitterness of being married, and the possible divorce. After all, counties all across the country are going broke and need the extra income in marriage licenses and all the fees involved in getting hitched, and divorced. I'd be interesting to find out if their divorce rate would equal man-woman marriages.
My only request is for gay men to stop acting like bitches and divas. I'd go along with you liking other men. However, you can be gay, but remain a gentleman.

I think that you can still be gay without losing your dignity. By the way, I have friends who are gay, and I treat, and respect, them in the same manner as my hetero friends. I judge a person by their character and not their sexual preference.

Why would anyone care if 2 people of the same sex get married? What harm does it do to ME if MY NEIGHBOR marries his or her partner? I would be very happy for gay men to marry each other… so they can stop marrying women and pretending to be straight. It's dangerous, dishonest and unfair to both parties. How can any of you say that a gay couple shouldn't be allowed to get "married" but can have a "civil union"? Yes, "marriage" is a religious term, which shouldn't be connected to government at all. The government should only be concerned with a civil union, which should be for anyone.
However, everyone has a right to practice religion the way it feels right to them. So, you're Christian, the Bible says marriage is between a man and a woman. I was reading about this, and one thing that's sad is that the federal government won't recognize these marriages. If you fall in love with a foreigner and get married, the government won't recognize the marriage!

As prior commenters have noted, "marriage" is a religious term and should remain such. I am all for civil unions for gay and lesbian couples, but don't call it marriage. Church and state are separate institutions, a fact often trumped by gay rights activists, and should remain so. Church and state can't remain separate when it's inconvenient for your cause, but come together when it is.
