Little House, The Musical

Filed under: TV News > Etc.

The death of 'new' ideas is infecting more than just Hollywoodland.

A musical version of 70's TV show Little House on the Prarie will be staged in Minneapolis, Minnesota this summer.

Plus, you'll be able to catch one of the TV show's stars in the production.

Melissa Gilbert, who famously portrayed Laura Ingalls on TV will be hitting the stage as momma Ingalls.

Somehow we don't think this show is gonna be jumping from Minneapolis to Broadway.

But, it might play a dinner theater near you soon!

Perez, you do realize that the show was based on books, right? I would venture to guess that the musical is based on the books as well, rather than the tv show..

People were saying the same thing when the musical "The Lion King" debuted in Minneapolis….just so you're aware….MN is rather cultured and has EXCELLANT theater….second to Broadway…you can quote me.

Charles Ingalls was hot as hell. Mary and her mother had a real bitchy disposition about them. Nellie and Mrs Olson were completely misunderstood. I think Nellie and her mother had Mary and Caroline's number from the get go, and that would explain a lot of their squirelly behavior.

    24. 24

      This is sooo wrong.

Perezzers - I love ya but don't slam on MPLS. Minneapolis second only to New York City in live theater per capita (53) and is the third-largest theater market in the U.S. The Guthrie Theater where this will debut has won a Tony - will you visit me if Little House on the Prairie makes it to Broadway?

    26. LHOTP says – reply to this

Wake up people. Laura Ingalls Wilder's books are still read by children every day all over the world and by some adults whenever they need a little stress relief from today's world and all the technical reading required to do anything these days. We should be so self sufficient. Michael Landon's version of Laura's life is wholly exaggerated in the TV Show of the 70's. Mary never married and was blind from a pre-teen age.
Now…I'm not sure a musical based on the books will do well, but I'm not a fan of musicals. I might drive up to MN….regardless.

Re: LHOTP – Oh I feel ya. I was raised in the 70's and my mom read to me all of the "Little House" original books when I was growing up. Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, etc." It was a very good memory I will never let go of. Enough cheesiness, carry on.

      28

Actually, this show is starting at the Guthrie Theater, not only one of the premier theaters in the Twin Cities, but in the country. Surprise–we actually are cultured in Minneapolis.

    29. 29

I just hope they don't screw it up and like have Laura and her sister have hot lesbian sex or anything. OR would that be screwing anything up….

Yeah nothing ever goes from Minneapolis to Broadway…well, only little things like THE LION KING

    31. brad says – reply to this

      31

actually things do go from minneapolis to broadway. minneapolis is the second or third largest theatre market in the country.

I think it's going to be a HIT! The show and book are classics!! PLUS it has Sara Jean Ford ( The curretnt Christine in the Phantom of the Opera Boradway tour) as Nellie and she is AMAZING. I CAN'T WAIT!

    35. Jackie says – reply to this

      35

Ummmm, I'm going to have to disagree with Perez here… (sorry!) Sara Jean Ford will be originating the role of Nellie, and she is BEYOND fabulous! Reason enough to go see it! :)

    36. Britta says – reply to this

      36

Britta should move if she's embarrassed to live in the Twin Cities.
The TC's are one of the mostly highly rated places to live.
And yes, Mpls/St Paul are the 2nd biggest market in the country, and the Guthrie is considered to be elite.
Get a clue perez and get out of the state britta

Lion King opened in Minneapolis, then moved to Broadway….not sure how many Little House fans are around, but I don't doubt it will move to Broadway.

My mom made my brother and sister and I watch this show. Like we were forced to because 'It'll teach you all a good lesson!' And my mom was totally into it, and I swear to God she cried at the end of every episode.

Perez, with all due respect, don't diss Minneapolis. We know theatre here. We recently had Sir Ian McKellan perform here for "King Lear," not to mention the "Lion King" originated here.

The Guthrie Theater is one of the most beautiful and well respected theaters in the country, it was designed French architect Jean Nouvel and sits right on the Mississippi River in Downtown Minneapolis (Minneapolis being one of the most productive arts city in the country next to NYC - research it!). Top notch actors, playwrights and directors from all over the world work with the Guthrie, and the Little House play, while very midwest, will be a beautiful and broadway worthy production. Go to www.guthrietheater.com to learn more about the theater.

The show actually has a pretty amazing team behind it…
The bookwriter Rachel Sheinkin has a Tony (for "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee") and the composer Rachel Portman has an Oscar (for the score of "Emma" - the first woman ever to win in that category).
I know that everybody doesn't like musicals, but don't knock this one…

Re: LHOTP – The books are fantastic, after having read them I was disappointed by the show. The plotline wasn't great and the casting was even worse, except for Michael Landon and Melissa Sue Anderson. Whatever happenned to her, anyway? The bitch who played Nellie Olsen needs to go away already, somebody forgot to tell her she's over. I wanted to smack those ugly fake curls off her big old empty head. I still do, really. You were a child star, we get it. Now run off into the sunset with Danny Bonaduce, you ugly cow.

guys, this is old news…and patrick swayze was supposed to play pa ingalls. seiously

ITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE star MELISSA GILBERT has signed up to star in a new musical version of the beloved TV show that made her a child star.
Gilbert, 44, played Laura Ingalls Wilder in the long-running 1970s and 80s series. She will return to the Prairie to play her former character's mother in the touring production, which will kick off in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this summer (08).
The new role follows a developmental workshop presentation last year (07), in which Gilbert starred alongside Patrick Swayze, who played Pa.
Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, will not reprise the role.
