Universal Studios is ablaze!

A big fire broke out early Sunday morning in the backlot and destroyed the iconic courthouse square set from Back to the Future, the King Kong exhibit and a video vault containing more than 40,000 videos and reels.

Almost 300 fire fighters worked to extinguish the flames.

A commercial shoot was going on in the backlot when the fire broke out.

The fire is under investigation.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured!

The worst part is that it absolutely reeks all throughout the valley from the burning plastic and film. I can't believe how strong the smell is, and I'm about 20 minutes down the freeway from the actual studios. Sad :(

    31. 31

Well, Perez/Mario, I give in. And I give up. You've blocked five of my posts (pro-Lydia, con-Paris), so it's clear you've had either a lawsuit of some sort, or you are carefully censoring for other reasons.

This site used to be a release, and fun. But advertising "get your avatar" and then censoring them, approval time 48 hours plus, registering, the misspelled "Loggin In", and logging out shit, profiles, email, following links, six letter-maximum…is just way too much trouble. The spell and passion is over, by the time one gets through all the fucking red tape.

Hope your number of "hits" will rebound to what were previous records. But I seriously doubt it. This site, your cash cow, has been critically wounded.

      44

I always figured that if they were going to keep film locked up together, they'd be in a fire proof vault that insured it's safety. That's a lot of film! I'm hoping nothing was lost forever! Hopefully these are films that were digitally stored somewhere or maybe made onto DVD already. Guess we'll find out more soon. That's really unfortunate.

    49. Chris says – reply to this

      49

I figured this was going to happen. Universal has plans to tear down the backlot and build CONDOS. So the breeders can keep overpopulating Los Angeles and have a place to live and L.A. as USUAL forgets all about it's history and what put it on the map. Universal was fighting the city and zoning and also the neighbors around the backlot. A would've fixed all that wouldn't it?? How pathetic Universal.. just like the rest of L.A…. throwing away it's history all for a measly BUCK. Maybe people should clamp their legs shut and STOP having kid after kid, so they wouldn't need endless housing. Although I am sure these condos will go to the snotty rich of L.A.

      53

I seriously doubt that the fire was severe enough to call for 300 firefighters to extinguish it, they probably made it their top priority just because it was a movie set. What a waste of our taxpayers' dollars!

    54. Tali says – reply to this

    55. Monica says – reply to this

      55

No way! I can't believe those things got destroyed, especially the 'Back to the Future' set. It's most definitely an iconic set. That's such a bummer.

    56. Josh says – reply to this

      56

It was a Pepsi commercial that was filming on the backlot. I saw them filming yesterday. It's quite possible some negligence from that set caused the fire.

    57. torey says – reply to this

      57

THAT SUCKS! You can rebuild sets, but you can't replace old reels. i'm going to mourn a bit.

    58. 58

thankfully? thankfully no one was seriously injured? those movies in a few years could be close priceless. I smell something fishy and its not crotch. It's this "investigation". Some one would only want to ruin some classics. Better check out Disney incorporations i think their getting less sells. My only advice is to universal studios: better get some theme parks, if all your movies are getting set on fire!

    59. Valeri says – reply to this

      59

To see this truly saddens me. I've been going to this theme park since I was a baby I love Universal Studios and It has always been a place my family have shared wonderful memories.

Back to the Future set ruined! This is a sad, sad day.

    71. Actual says – reply to this

      71

There was NO video or commercial shoot taking place. It was arson. Why would they be shooting a commercial at five in the morning?

Also, it didn't destroy any reels, only videos, thankfully.

As well as the back to the future lot being destroyed, the "New York Street" is no more.

It's very sad. These sets, and streets were history. They were sets from many, many movies. We will never see them again.

    73. 73

I don't understand why people need to set fires…hopefully this wasn't intentional, but if it was I hope the arsonist gets what he deserves. People who set fires, so way more damage than they intended too

      74

It's my fault. I tossed a joint in a pile of trash when the security guard walked towards me. I ran and hid near a film vault. When he left, I snagged several reels of old time porn. One shows Heddy Lemar flashing her beaver in the woods. Must be at least 80 years old.

      88

I read somewhere that Universal - like all other film studios - keep their films in salt mines since the humidity and temps are perfect. Nitrate film stock turns into dust if they're kept in undesirable conditions. The vault that burned only stored copies of their TV shows and movies, and are not the originals. Thanks to this being the digital age of copying and restoring, the Universal film library will live on for ages.
