The Final Curtain

gonewiththewind.jpg

A musical version of Gone With the Wind has closed in London after just two months on the West End.

The show, which cost $8 million to put on, has become one of the biggest flops in the history of London's West End.

Plans for a New York production are wisely on hold.

A musical version of Gone With the Wind is a "sacrilege" for this legendary film which happens to be my favorite film of all times.and 2 months seem too much to me.

I don't think the Brit's can relate to the South and the whole, "Y'all" thing. Didn't they love the elaborate costumes? I loved GWTW. "Quite Frankly Dear, I Don't Give A Damn!" ~ Rhett Butler

Has anyone seen the movie "IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES" with little Drew Barrymore? In the movie her loser dad (a movie director) makes a musical version of GONE WITH THE WIND, it flops and he goes broke. Art imitating art imitating art imitating art…. what a fucking stupid idea. LOL!

Re: Bahama9 – Not to nitpick here, but Vivian Leigh was actually English. So, yah know.

What a shock, given that DARIUS DANESH was playing Rhett Butler! He is no Rhett Butler!

The Brits love Gone With The Wind, but nothing can compare to the 1939 movie and the original cast!! The GREATEST movie EVER!!!!!

good, its a stupid and horribly racist book/movie/play anyway

      27

Uuuh, Vivian Leigh did not have prominent nipples on the original movie poster. nice touch

      28

I went to see it before it premiered and it was too long, a mixture of the book and the film and the actors were too influenced by the characters portrayed by Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh and tried too hard to imitate them: Mission Impossible. Ever!!! Having said that, I´m sooooo sad that I kind of liked it. Although non-fans of GWTW would probably have been bored out of their brains

    29. 29

I'm kind of surprized by that. Gone With The Wind is a classic!

    30. KELLY says – reply to this

      30

you know why? because you can't recreate a classic. No one will ever be able to portray Scarlett and Rhett like Leigh and Gable. So don't even try!!

Re: whatev – First of all, the book was written in the 1920s (during a time when racism was still prominent). But despite that, the books' backdrop is civil war/antebellum Georgia. If you are reading a book in this era and are expecting not to see racism, then you are sadly out of your mind to begin with. Second, even with racial undertones, the book is not about slavery/war/racism/etc. The book is about hope, desperation, and unexpected love when the world around you is falling apart. You just can't put modern society standards on a classic like Gone With the Wind. And if you don't understand that, then you are just as ignorant.

They shouldn't have touched this classic.

      35

I love classic movies… but gone with the wind is horrible……..too long, annoying characters… the idea was good but the movie itself is bad. I wouldnt wanna watch the musical… imagine all the characters singing for over four hours…

      36

You should actually read the article before you post the news. It hasn't closed yet. It will close on June 14.

Why would the brits care about our civil war anyway? That was not a smart move, and neither is New York. . . damn yankees. LOL

      38

So sad! Such a good IDEA…but almost impossible to transfer to the musical format, I guess. Maybe this is like Ang Lee's "Hulk" movie and someone will come up with a better script and we'll get another attempt. I hope so!

I went to see this in may, and it was not good! i understood why it was 3.5 hours long since the book is very long, as was the movie. I think if they had put this on simply as a play and not a musical it would have been far more successful. At some points it was so hard not to laugh because the songs were so awful!

      42

you cant take a classic almost 4 hour film and expect it to be good on stage….
