Good news for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and his family.
The surgery Kennedy had today was a success, and according to his rep, the doctors said they accomplished their goals during the six hour operation.
Dr. Matthew Ewend, neurosurgery chief at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, said "Many of us believe that the more you get out, the next treatments, whether they be radiation or chemotherapy, have a better chance of working because there's less tumor there to fight."
The surgeons attempted to remove as much of the tumor as possible, trying not to risk the possibility of affecting the brain's function for movement and speech too much.
Congrats for the successful surgery.
Let's hope he has a speedy recovery.

Isn't it nice that Ted Kennedy can afford to fly anywhere in the world for the best medical care? When he and his wealthy cohorts manage to push through socialized medicine, not only will we all be broke from the taxes to support it, but we will be stuck with the dregs of the medical profession. We will not be able to afford good doctors. Good, smart people will no longer go into medicine. The government will cap their earnings. Only the wealthy will be able to afford the best.
I work as a RN on a neuro floor. We see many patients with GBM (GlioBlastoma Multiforme) but the sad fact is the tumors continually come back. Some have multiple tumor resections but few are still alive after 2 years.

The Mary Jo Kopechne story has always bothered me. His behavior cannot be explained, except for someone covering up something. Drunk driving, or something more ominous? I can't believe this guy was behaving like everything was normal the next morning. The "accident" wasn't reported to the police — she was found by a third party who happened upon the car. Who behaves this way?
If you drove your car into a pond, would get your buddies, attempt to rescue her, but if that failed, go home and not call the cops? Leave her in the car? Oh well, to bad, we just couldn't reach her. Senator Kennedy's surgery is about giving him comfort and possibly prolonging his life for just a little while longer…..He will not be "recovering" from this brain tumor per se. He has "bought the farm" if you will, and he is going about it with so much dignity. As a life long Kennedy admirer, I wish him comfort and laughter in his remaining days.
