We Thought This Would Never Happen!

radioheaditunes.jpg

Yes, Radiohead fans…it's true. You can now get all of the band's stuff pre-In Rainbows on iTunes.

Did they finally realize how much money they were missing out on?

Radiohead had previously allowed its record label to sell its albums digitally on music services ONLY in album form - meaning you couldn't just buy individual songs.

The Apple folks refuse to do this, so Radiohead declined to sell its music on iTunes…that is until the album In Rainbows, which the band released for 'unbundled' sale (i.e. songs a la carte) on the service following its pricing-optional debut.

We thinks money almost always trumps 'artistry'!

The fact that their entire back catalog turning up on itunes the same time that EMI is releasing "the best of Radiohead" without the bands permission or participation. (In fact, the band has spoken out against EMI for doing this) Makes me wonder if Radiohead actually gave their permission for these albums to be on itunes or if EMI is doing it despite the band's protests.

the reason radiohead is now on itunes is not because the band wanted more money, its because radiohead is no longer under contract with capitol records. capitol in effort to milk radiohead's library for all its worth decided to surrender to apple's wishes. please try to do your homework.

That's not true. iTunes sells songs in albums form all the time. I worked for Universal, and every single one of our movie soundtracks had to be bought as an album…not as individual songs.

i was kinda sad to read an article about Thom Yorke saying he would never give away another album that they lost all this money. does Radiohead need that much money? - i had a lot of friends buy that special package of In Rainbows.

i got it for free, i've paid a lot for other radiohead stuff in the past.

if this is what they want to do, then fine, but it is a little disheartening.

i still love Radiohead - and they did start this movement of rejecting labels and selling or giving away music, that even influenced Trent Reznor - and then they take it back. meh.

*by the way, the sound quality on iTunes isnt the great, especially for a band like Radiohead. so buying one or two songs on their is just lame, it won't even sound that great.

so sure they lose some cred to their name, but they are also selling out the quality of the music they work so hard to produce and create?

FINALLY Perez, reporting on real musicians. Thank you. But you are wrong - they don't do it for the money. They are leading the way in having music be about the art and not the politics. Hell yeah! Their record company is milking them while in contract… they should be bitch slapped.

You know….I love reading this site. However, Perez has such a douch bag view on the music industry. He always puts down any band that is worth a shit. Radiohead is no longer with their record label which I am sure is why all the songs are making their way to Itunes. Radiohead is still the best band in the world and the artistry will always come first for them!!!! Know what you are talking about! Much Love!

You are a dumbass, Perez. EMI is behind this release, NOT Radiohead. They left EMI and this is how EMI is trying to get the last bit of money out of their cashcow.

I'd advise anyone to go back and buy the individual albums as opposed to this whacko compilation EMI put together. Anyone who listens to Radiohead realizes that it's a complete moron who's put together the song list on this *new* album.

Go back and do what you do best (bashing Brit Brit) and leave Radiohead alone.

    46

well, ur facts are wrong. radioheads music wasnt on itunes before becuase their record label wasnt signed with itunes, which meant that their music couldnt be on the site, they arent pretentious enough to turn down itunes because they sell single songs. second, they were against a greatest hits cd, and they had nothing to do with the creation of the itunes page, they dont want the money at all, but their old record company emi still owned all of their music, so they made a deal with itunes to sell these things, which they can now do without permission from radiohead. anyone who at least knows anything about radiohead knows about this, since their problems with their record company have been a big deal ever since in rainbows was released for choose ur price. i would apreciate it if you took this down, considering your opinions were based on complete lack of knowledge and ignorace

You people are IDIODIC. Radiohead makes money whenever EMI makes money. So if you buy OK Computer, Radiohead makes money. The band WANTS you to buy this. Stop being such whiny a-holes and focus on the music. The MUSIC is awesome - and truth is every band from Pink Floyd to The Beatles to Bob Marley have best of albums, and I'm guessing most of you own one of those.

  48. Paula says – reply to this
    48

Radiohead doesn't own any pre-In Rainbows stuff. They split with their label (EMI) just before In Rainbows. It's EMI who is now allowing all their songs on iTunes and EMI even put out a Best Of album to try and make money off of them despite not being on their label. Who's looking for a money grab? It's EMI.

  49. Soufle says – reply to this
    49

Well, I'm not sure about the whole EMI debacle, but if they were trying to make a profit, why shouldn't they? They are one of the best bands around and there are a ton of no talent ass clowns rolling in dough so I think Radiohead deserves a piece of the pie for their contribution. In the words of Flo Rida, "E'ry nigga gotta eat"!

We all know that RH aren't with EMI… And who says they are selling the songs individually on Itunes for money… That's pure assumption. There is no way you can know their intentions, it could be for countless reasons… Maybe they just decided to finally let it go through, just for the hell of it. Not saying that RH are beyond being greedy (which easily could have some to do with it), just saying that you have no sources to back up your viewpoint. Even if they are trying to line their pockets, the album is still amazing, and they deserve every penny they get.

Radiohead's contract ended with their previous record company before they released in rainbows. Thats why they were able to release inrainbows online, and thats why there is a new best of album available without anything from inrainbows on it. Their previous record company just wants to make some money, and im assuming thats why its now available on itunes.
