The U.S economy continues to shed jobs, though the losses are not of the magnitude that would suggest that a recession is at hand. We continue to believe employment conditions will deteriorate further. In the meantime, the spike in the unemployment rate should sufficiently spook the Fed so as to keep them from hiking in the near term as the market expects, though it is not yet sufficient proof for the Fed to revert to rate cutting.

perez — again … please stick to the hollywood gossip! In the 1990's when the unemployment rate was 5.4% — our media (who at the time, LOVED the clintons) were espousing that this was near RECORD EMPLOYMENT for the US — it is a lousy 10th of a % higher - 5.5% and all of a sudden, we are in soup lines!? Come on…think about it folks, this means that 94.5% of Americans are working … check out unemployment rates else where in the world - that ought to put it in perspective.

    that's actually pretty low.
and to nokill: it doesn't reflect the republican party as a whole. it's a reflection on perhaps some unwise decisions on the part of the bush administration, but not on every member of his party.

I've gone to THREE colleges…not to mention having gone to private school and one of the top ranked public high schools in the nation…and I can't get a job to save my life. FUCK YOU is you think that people not being able to secure jobs is because they're stupid…sometimes it's economic, sometimes it's location, sometimes it's happenstance…just because you ask "Would you like to super-size that?" does not give you the right to place all others under the "stupidity" blanket. :(

Re: Lola – if you REALLY needed a job you could find one… maybe it wouldnt be doing what you want to do.. but it is a job. someone out there would definatly hire someone with a college education even if its at the mall.. but i understand you want a job in your field.. but that doesn't mean there are not jobs available. the poor uneducated want to just get money and not work hard.. there are always places hiring (mcdonalds, etc!!) so if you really need a job you need to apply yourself. In general people need to rely on themselves to provide for themselves and not on the economy to let them just 'live'.

my parents have been laid off and now potentially will lose their job. Hopefully they will still receive their retirements. But its difficult for people who have worked at the same company since they were out of school to pick up and start a new job…my parents are older and easily replaceable i mean they thought they would be retiring soon-not starting a NEW career!!!

Maybe a bit off the subject, but the Oil companys profit billions of dollars and everyone else is getting poor. Why do gas prices keep going up if they are profiting so much??? Not to mention food prices. Its not just the Oil companys profiting so much. Most of these job cuts are so these companys can still profit and run off to there Million $ houses, Yahts and pay for there upscale schools for there children. The RICH are getting Richer and the Poor getting Poorer. Its always been this way no matter who the President is. I could go on and on…

Though this is indeed terrible news, the blame can not lie soley on the Bush administration alone. Our country has been entering a recession even before Bush's presidency. 47

Really Perez, all of a sudden you think you are some type of a "real reporter". You have little to no concept of economics. However you love to blame a government you dont agree with for everything that is wrong. 1st off my friend many economists agree that FULL employment is between 2 to 7% and yes, loosing 49K jobs is not good, but many high paying sectors such as technology and manufacturing are thriving. Why dont you blame the wall street honchos (most of which are very liberal democrats BTW) for the problems the economy is having due to their appetite for profits at any costs. I would imagine most of the jobs lost are in the housing and banking sectors.

Also do your research on oil prices. I guess it never occurred to you that oil is rising not because of some US policy but beucase countries like China, India and South American countries are growing at rates that require them to purchase more and more oil. Remember supply and demand from school?

Really stick to the stupid stuff you know and leave the real reporting to others. All you are doing is helping to further the ignorance that is the real problem behind most of our societies woes.

    Re: anniRe: anni

I think you should re-read my comment - I agree, we are NOT in a recession, but your definition of a recession is wrong…trust me, I have an undergrad and a masters in economics…The official judges of American downturns—a group of academics at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)—define a recession as “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production and wholesale-retail sales.” (Contrary to popular belief, recession does not require two consecutive quarters of falling output.) Though the NBER's wonks will not pronounce for many months, their criteria look increasingly likely to be met.

Unemployment has nothing to do with the President, and everything to do with the DEMOCRATIC congress that is FUCKING US OVER. In 2006 unemployment was at 4.5% and has jumped over 10% since our last election. (the SAME point can be made for gas prices, which, in 06 .ere at $2.20 per gallon)

  66. Modera says – reply to this
    66

And in the late 70s during the Carter administration unemployment was between 8 and 12 percent! Imagine that! It's 5.5 percent and people are panicking…it's still the lowest in history and the Liberals are making a huge deal out of it. Elect Obama, get the Democrats in control of Congress and the White house, let them raise taxes and impose all these environmental acts and we will see the economy tank like a lead balloon…and all the while they will blame the Republicans.

  67. socalg says – reply to this
    67

    Ahem:

Economic Conditions Portrayed as Positive During Clinton Presented as Negative for Bush

    * Clinton Good; Bush Bad: Stories about jobs during Bill Clinton’s reelection campaign were positive 85 percent of the time – more than six times as often as they were for Bush, despite similar economic data. Reporters praised the Clinton unemployment rate of 5.6 percent as “low,” but they downplayed a 5.4 percent rate under Bush and called job growth “anemic.”

    * Good News Becomes Bad News: Under Bush, reporters presented good economic data as bad news stories by minimizing positive achievements and emphasizing people who might be out of work or regions of the U.S. that were still “struggling.” The opposite approach was taken under President Clinton. Then, reporters explained away a 0.2 percent rise in unemployment as minor or, “not necessarily bad news.” …

So a .2 percent rise up from 5.6 percent unemployment under Bill Clinton was good news. But a .1 percent uptick from 4.5 percent unemployment under President Bush is the end of the world.

It was ever thus with our Democrat controlled media.
