That is ludicrous! Gas is at an all-time high, RICE (the most basic staple of diets) has increased 70% in price in the last two years. And Cuba is going to waste the money that could be used to feed the people is instead going to spend the money on sex changes? This is ridiculous. I completely agree and advocate for same sex marriage, gay rights, etc but if they want a sex change operation they should have to pay for it. The government could be using this money on helping feed the poor or do something that is immediate and necessary.

All of you who are saying this unnecessary are IGNORANT and UNEDUCATED. Many people need this operation to live a happy healthy life.
Alot of people are born in the wrong body, they are called Transgendered. While in the womb, the body grows as one gender, but the mind grows as the oposite. You go thru your life feeling like your not right, your a freak, in the wrong body.
This surgery is the only thing that can free them from that. And so many people do not have the money to get this done, so I think this is AWESOME for them.
So don't sit there and freak out about how unnecessary this is.

This is crazy. I believe that if you are born a female you should be a female. If you are born a male you should be a male. Why does it have to be so complicated? If it is over someone's happiness because they feel that they are the wrong gender then shouldn't that be looked at as a mental disorder? If so, it should be taken very seriously, but why change gender to eliminate the problem? Why not work on the mental state of the person?
It's not mental it's biologically fixed in the brain, it's physiological. It was treated as a mental disorder until recent studies have found brain differences in males and females occur the opposite way around in female to male and male to female transsexuals… innit
Also, why should this be free? My brother has CF and had to have a bi-lateral lung transplant. That wasn't FREE. That was life or death. This is absolutely ludacris. Yeah, go ahead and pay for a sex change while others die of diseases they were born with.

The general modern/progressive/liberal point of view is that people are born gay, right? If that argument holds true, then how we are born is how we are meant to be.
If there is a specific genetic situation, involving X and Y chromosomes and congenital deformity of the genitalia, then carve according to the chromosomes.
Elective surgery is just that. Not surgically necessary, but a personal choice. I'm not feeling the public paying for free elective/cosmetic surgical "adjustments".
