Unions at War

strike.jpg

Instead of fighting the studio suits the two main actors' unions are fighting one another!

The bigger of the unions, the Screen Actors' Guild, has asked the other union, AFTRA, to hold off on moving forward with its deal with the suits.

SAG feels like they'll make more progress with the big media moguls if AFTRA holds back.

AFTRA has said no.

Both unions have members that overlap. AFTRA's members work in daytime TV and radio. SAG's members appear in nighttime TV and film.

AFTRA has warned SAG that it might pursue legal remedies if SAG tried to "undermine or interfere with our ratification process."

AFTRA members are set to vote on the new contract later this month.

SAG and the AMPTP met 18 times from April 15 through May 6 without reaching an agreement.

It's a shame that they can't find a way to work together.

Strength in numbers - divided you fall, right?

The suits must be loving this bickering!

Perhaps this is why television sucks so bad. We have a bunch of morons that don't know up from down. Thus the plethora of "reality" shows. The only network show I watch is Two and a Half Men. And if I miss it, no sweat.

I'm more into A & E, Discovery, etc. These idiots can have at it for all I care.

What about those of us that are paying $4.30 a gallon for gas? Do I feel sorry for these chumps? Fuck no!

If the Dems get office - the entire economy will be a catastrophic failure. And lucky us! We'll get to foot the bill with more taxes! More taxes for less stuff.
For that matter, if the Republicans get it, same deal.

Honestly, my last concern is for this matter. I'm more worried about how I'm gonna pay my bills.

Perhaps this is an indicator of just how far behind television, film, etc is so behind other forms of art. Just the nature of these mediums requires lots and lots of money. Maybe with the combination of sites like youtube and the availability of high(er) quality equipment at low costs, the artistic side of film can someway be salvaged.

All of these "union wars" and battles within the industry make television/film an issue of money opposed to creative thought. I have a lot of creative thoughts that I would love to express through film, but I do not have hundreds of millions of dollars to fund my visions.

I can not say what art is nor would I presume to make up some definition. What I do know is art is not the equivalent of an accounting job.

The Suits and the rest of the crew! Unlike actors or writers, the rest of the crew members that are needed to make a film or tv show usually work where they live. In order to keep their location competitive their unions continually make concessions, DECREASING pay and benefits. When the the writers striked many members had to sell their home, go into debt, change their careers or in desperate cases I know of two IATSE members that committed suicide. AFTRA has accepted a deal and I PRAY it forces SAG to a quick deal, the film community will suffer greatly if not.

ah vincent looks old with that grizzly Adams beard. Looks like he should be tapping for maple or sawing some trees down in a Canadian forest somewhere.
id still let him tap this 21 year old fresh booty.

Vincent D'nofrio is scarey looking with that beard…he has that homeless look thing going on. He looks somewhat better clean shaven.

the average scripted u.s. tv show had a 20 percent smaller audience after the writers strike. that is, among shows that weren't just plain canceled during or after the job action. i forsee more unscripted shows in our future, no doubt inspired by outstanding cultural treasures like the amazing race, deal or no deal, mythbusters, and larry king live. besides, it's not like anyone is going to be hurting with the economy the way it is, right? also, one of the few good things about strikes are strike beards. conan o'brien went from mouse to man last time!

Thanks for starting my day off with a smile!

I will never work at a place that has a union. If a union is NEEDED then the place isn't worth working at. IMHO.
