If gay marriage is all you've got to be proud of Ontario, than you're pretty pathetic. I live in California and the beginning of the end starts next week when it becomes legal here. Whats next?
    Multiple spouses….animals?

  32. Whamo says – reply to this

    32

Not all of us think this is OK. Gay union yes….Marriage in the traditional sense NO. And don't start calling me a bigot and homophobic. I just believe marriage should be reserved for a man & women.

  33. kathi says – reply to this

    33

Youre right people…thats wonderful news. Now what about legalizing sisters "marrying" their brothers…Or even better, sisters "marrying" their sisters. How about Dad "marrying" his Daughter…How about all you Polygamists, you should have the right to marry as many women as you want. Thats right , its a free country and we all should have the right to do what we want and live how we want. Discrimination is discrimination. Why stop here? Its only a matter of time.

  43. CW says – reply to this

    43

I'm glad to call Ontario home. I remember that when it passed, my Uncle who always seemed a little conservative, supported the legislation. He exclaimed that now everybody had the opportunity to endure the misery of marriage! lol

Anyway, happy anniversary to all of my gay and lesbian friends who have since had happy unions under this law. :)

to all the people who are against gay marriage do you realize that your reading the blog of a gay man? therefore stop being such hypocrites and get on the damn equality train. canada is the shit, america needs to catch up and once obama becomes president maybe your stupid country will stop being enforcers of the republican ideals which are tearing apart the fabric of your hate filled land. you don't need to like what people do, but that doesn't mean you can love them because when it comes down to it we're all fucking human.
    wooo gay marriage!

    Re: milotjuh

Holland is not a country. Holland is the former name of part of what is now the Netherlands.

Re: same-sex marriage - I was proud when Ontario initiated this and I'm still proud today. Kudos to all the other provinces and territories that have since legalised gay marriage as well (except Alberta, PEI, NWT and Nunavut who chickened-out and called it civil union).

As for everyone who reviles gay marriage, puhlease. Society allows non-religious heterosexual couples to consider themselves married rather than civilly united, so why not homosexual couples? But if you absolutely insist on blaming something for the state of "marriage" today, why not blame it on divorce? I could care less whether people divorce, yet I hardly hear any right-wing religious fanatics calling for the right to divorce to be repealed. Get with the program people!

    59

Can't believe it's been 5 years already! My cousin is the Chief Justice of Canada who signed it into the law books :)

  60. Gay says – reply to this

    60

People please! To those that are wondering when we're going to legalize kissing siblings and polygamy, and Daddy's marrying daughters, relax! Pull your head out of your anus and realize that the traditional society deemed gays as "bad". And yeah the bible also says it but Men wrote the bible so… love is love people, whether you're a man loving a man, woman loving a woman. You do realize it just means their union is legal in the eyes of the government? That's all…nothing more, nothing less, but they have the right to that decision.
Men and women getting married to see it as sacred much anymore seeing as divorce is rarely a dime a dozen, so why not let more people have a crack at the bat?

  61. Eliza says – reply to this

    61

Wow, has it been that long? Hmm. My nuclear family hasn't disintegrated, none of my kids have "turned gay" (although I always say, when you grow up and fall in love with a girl OR boy), Jesus hasn't had his second coming and no sign of terrorists. Wake up USA! It's time for equal rights. As my Mom always said, "It's better that there's more love in the world, than it is to hate."

  62. sarah says – reply to this

    62

gay marriage is legal in all of canada's provinces, not just ontario. catch up usa!

  63. 63

I've been lucky enough to have been asked to be a witness twice to people I didn't even know, and I just got a lovely card from the two gentlemen who asked me five years ago come July! And no, the world is safe from ending; everything is just fine, society is doing great, and the province is an even happier place.
Sigh. I love here. (Most of the time! :) )

    68

Canadians, as a group of citizens, actively fought hard for this legislation. It had nothing to do with liberalism. We still believe that our Government representatives are elected to represent the majority will of the people, and actively lobby and pass legislation such as anti-hate laws, or in this case legalizing gay marriage. Our government is currently conservative as it is, and NOT liberal. Why do U.S. citizens deny same sex couples the right to work benefits, pension benefits etc. when it's really no skin off their backs personally? To do so simply pushes a whole group of contributing members of society underground. Anything you can do to improve society for your citizens is worth fighting for, and to do this doesn't hurt. anybody. else.

  73. AB says – reply to this

    73

Re: Marri – #53 - You are incorrect when you stated; "(except Alberta, PEI, NWT and Nunavut who chickened-out and called it civil union)."
Those provinces and territories did not 'chicken out'. They respected the majority will of their inhabitants as representative provincial governments have a mandate to do, and those citizens absolutely wished to legalize gay marriage, but chose to differentiate the technical title out of consideration for and to quell and still any remaining religious objections regarding the definition of marriage. Potato, po-taaa-to. It was, all in all, a collaborative win/win. The religious beliefs also got respected along with the gay community.

Re: socal – You are wrong. Any physicians that leave are lured by big money, but far more are currently returning to Canada than are leaving, and I have concrete stats on that. Returning physicians are frustrated by their inability to follow through on patients care due to mid-care denials by U.S. insurance companies, as well as frustration over the spectre of good, hard working people who have no health care at all. 'Lotsa Money' in exchange for Partial or denied care would not be a good trade-off after a few years for al Doctor initially raised in Canada, where everyone gets care/follow through, just as the U.K and France do, along with many other progressive countries. The stats on returning Doctors are substantial. I think any Doctors that wish to make big money should also be free to do as they so wish.

I believe that research will out finite biological reasons for the difference; and some have been found already. You are like someone who is mad that a bird is a seagull rather than a crane. Try to wrap your head around what I'm trying to communicate to you. Tolerance builds a loving nation; intolerance breeds division, hatred and infighting. Re: socal – Our country's not going to hell. My province is in the biggest financial boom since Canada was founded. Plus if I get sick, I don't lose my house. You need to quit spouting the propaganda and start lobbying for good stuff for yourselves as U.S. Citizens. We have our problems, too, but we have health care while we deal, and you guys are facing some unique and special problems right now. You need to know how much Canadians are rooting for all of you as a country to thrive, rise above and do well. Why would we even bother posting anything if we didn't. Don't bite your largest trading partners and biggest friends and neighbours in the ass. Canadians really are generally altruistic. I know that when we need help, you'd be there, no doubt. Canadians mobilize to every fire and disaster that happens in the U.S. if it's welcomed.

actually, gay marraige isn't the only thing we're proud of. Ontario is a beautiful province, which ranks high in any quality of life assesment. We also have a superior health care system, unlike that of our Southern counterpart and most importantly, we have less ignorami - a type of barbarian only found near the South Western Coast, more precisely in the state of California.

Get bent and go watch the Hills, douche bag.

Re: Alber – I don't buy your steep slope argument. Gays are human beings, not animals. Your bigotry is so showing. To bait and switch to an 'animals next' argument to deny a segment of your population equal rights is unconscionable, along with a bit irrational, unreasonably paranoid and perhaps agenda based. It just sounds like more fear mongering to attempt to maintain what YOU deem should be the status quo. If you don't care for gay marriage, as is your right, don't marry a same sex partner. There. Happy? I'm straight, btw.
