Study: 1 in 4 adults in NYC have herpes virus

A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.

The department says genital herpes can double a person's risk for contracting HIV.

Herpes can cause painful sores, but most people have no recognizable symptoms.

Among New Yorkers, the herpes rate is higher among women, black people and gay men.

The health department urges consistent use of condoms, and says its STD clinics offer free, confidential herpes testing.

    By the herpes virus they mean that it include the herpes simplex virus- which is bascially a mouth coldsore.

    1 in 4 does not have GENITAL herpes.

    You can have herpes type 1 transmitted from kissing to oral. You can have herpes type 1 as a child and not know it and get it from your first partner. Being "slutty" has nothing to do with it and you of all people shouldn't talk Perez -_-

    I know a guy that has it and doesn't tell the women he's with because the person that gave it to him didn't tell him. He considers it payback. He even gave it to his wife without her knowing he had it. He took her right to protect herself!!!

    i would like to share that as a nurse i have seen cases where women contracted this disease from their partners going to their nether regions with a cold sore on their mouths. i cannot stress how important it is not to have oral relations if you or your partner has a cold sore on your mouth of any kind. what is even sadder to me is that the people suffering from the virus are mostly young teenage girls. be safe!

    I believe that statistic is for the general population: 1 in four people have genital herpes. That means that many people who have responded to this post have it. Maybe they don;t know it yet, or maybe they just aren't sayin'.

    If you are talking about the HPV-virus (humane papilloma virus) thats the most common STD yo can get. About 80% of the population have it and the most dangerous is the kind that doenst give you outbreaks (not the same as herpes here) because it can cause cervix cancer. Its pretty harmless actually (Ive been infected by it and pretty much know what Im talking about) and is easily treated.
