Study: 1 in 4 adults in NYC have herpes virus
A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.
The department says genital herpes can double a person's risk for contracting HIV.
Herpes can cause painful sores, but most people have no recognizable symptoms.
Among New Yorkers, the herpes rate is higher among women, black people and gay men.
The health department urges consistent use of condoms, and says its STD clinics offer free, confidential herpes testing.

i would like to share that as a nurse i have seen cases where women contracted this disease from their partners going to their nether regions with a cold sore on their mouths. i cannot stress how important it is not to have oral relations if you or your partner has a cold sore on your mouth of any kind. what is even sadder to me is that the people suffering from the virus are mostly young teenage girls. be safe!

I believe that statistic is for the general population: 1 in four people have genital herpes. That means that many people who have responded to this post have it. Maybe they don;t know it yet, or maybe they just aren't sayin'.

If you are talking about the HPV-virus (humane papilloma virus) thats the most common STD yo can get. About 80% of the population have it and the most dangerous is the kind that doenst give you outbreaks (not the same as herpes here) because it can cause cervix cancer. Its pretty harmless actually (Ive been infected by it and pretty much know what Im talking about) and is easily treated.

I have it. And lemme tell you how my bf at the time had cold sores and never told me he had them, nor did he have any symptoms showing (so yes, you can get it/pass it on when there are no cold sores).
Also, condoms wouldn't have protected me against that. He went down on me, and when I started to feel sore a few days/a week later, he surprised me and told me he had cold sores. Thanks ex-bf. That was 3 years ago, and thankfully, I haven't had an outbreak since I first got it. As far as I know, I haven't passed it on to anyone either (and yes I have told every single person I've slept with since)

Well I'm telling my story to put into perspective how easily you can contract it. So before anyone labels someone as a slut, as Perez has done…. know the facts. 80-90% have HSV-1, which causes cold sores on your mouth and about 25% have HSV-2 which is genital herpes. Not everyone infected gets symptoms

Oral herpes or "cold sores' can be transfered to the Genitals from oral sex. 80% of the population has oral herpes. 98% of people with herpes don't know they have it. You have to request a blood test for Herpes. And what cryst says is true, some of the people making fun are carriers and spreading it themselves.

You kids need to understand that this is very serious and understand the consequences of having sex. Also understand that herpes (both types) can be passed to the other place i.e. oral to genital and genital to oral. Do some research before you summit ignorant comments!!

Normally I don't comment on things Perez says. However the comment "sluts" in regards to the number of people with herpes bothers me. I have only been with my husband and he has never shown any signs of herpes, however, somehow I ended up with it. He has had several parters, so I guess if anyone he would be the slut. But none of his partners as far as he is aware have ever had any signs either. and even as the article states, many people don't realize they have it.
And really, herpes is the same virus that causes cold sores on your lips. so you have cold sores on your no no bits. annoying and painful yes, but not restricted to "sluts."

Yes, you can transmit Herpes Simplex via lipsticks and lip-glosses. If the infected cells on the makeup contain Herpes Simplex #1, that is what you will catch. If the cell contain Herpes Simplex #2, then you'll catch that one.
You never even have to see a sore to have Herpes. You can carry the virus (and pass it on) without even knowing.
Don't try on make-up at places like Sephora unless you cut off HALF of the lipstick and then wipe it down with alcohol and a tissue. Never even TOUCH the sample glosses.
Don't try on make-up for the face, either (such as blush or powders). You may catch Herpes Zoster (shingles) from those products.
