One of our fave singers, Katy Perry, has a top 5 single on the charts called I Kissed a Girl.
But before Katy, singer-songwriter Jill Sobule had a 1995 hit of the same name.
So, how does Jill feel about Katy's success?
Well, she's finally speaking out about it!
Sobule says in a new interview, “I don't feel precious about the title, but I've gotten tons of e-mails from annoyed fans. Some think it’s more of a Girls Gone Wild thing than anything shocking or empowering to true gay feelings…Maybe I'll write a third I Kissed a Girl for fun. It will be about how I kissed her, Ieft the dull boyfriend, got gay-married in California, and really no one gave a s—.”
Sobule also goes on to say, "Katy Perry's song is a kind of catchy party song, although I will admit that I do smile when a critique mentions my version in a more favorable light. Is that wrong?”
We like both!
But we like Katy's better!

Katy's song bothers me because it's acting like kissing a girl is such a big deal. Now, in this day and age, everyone's kissed a girl. It's fun and catchy, but the lyrics bother me to no end. Like, Katy's the first person to experiment and she's defending it, when, yes, in this day and age, no one gives a shit.

Jill's is WAY better. It is about exploring true questions a girl may have of herself. Katy's is going along with the "in" thing right now. Teenage girls make out with other girls daily just to get a reaction and make boys like them. They think it's cool. It takes away from the seriousness of a girl truly finding herself and coming out. I am a high school counselor and this is what I have found in the past few years. Certainly this song makes the girls feel like kissing their bff is cool and it makes the hot football players smile so they do it.

Jill's version was empowering for women, Katy's is perpetuating the whole " I kiss chicks to turn on guys" bullcrap. Its also an inferior song in just about every way. She should send Jill 10% off the song's profits as payment for her homage.

Nothing wrong with you liking Katy's song better. It's not half bad. And if that's your style of music, then go for it. I prefer Jill's song. But I was a teenager when that song came out, and I was more open to the music of the time. Personally, I'd like to thank you for being fair. The two songs are completely different, despite having the same name. Jill's song could be interpreted as a sexual awakening — she talks about kissing a girl and wanting to do it again and how it is this new amazing experience. Katy's song is a theme song for bicurious girls — read: straight girls who get drunk and make out with another girl (most likely at a club or in a hot tub). Nothing wrong with that, but it is definitely not a song that speaks to girls and women who actually engage in serious relationships with other women. I like Katy's song, but I don't relate to it. If only she had left it at "I kissed a girl and I liked it." Now that's a song I can sing!
