I would not give any money to this country until the Janjaweed is no longer a threat. "Do It" It is hard to invent things or do something worth wild when your country has limited natural resources and as an individual probably do not have access to them.
My sister is involved with this program, and was just in Sudan opening the first school. The money goes straight to fund the schools. Most of the American workers are volunteers, like my sister, and the people who are paid work directly to implement the program. It is a joint effort by Sudanese and American workers, and it is going to make a difference in the lives of the people of Sudan, and in the fate of the country, which is also our fate. No one, and certainly not Perez Hilton, is making money off of this.
Perez, what they need first is TEACHERS and DOCTORS, then facilities. Many young educated people leave their poor countries for a better future in the western world. To avoid that people need to get paid according to their education and be able to work under human circumstances. Therefore political changes are necessary. Building schools doesn't solve the problem, worst case scenario it's a show for some poor fucker that wants to get elected but then forgets about education.
How about long term pay for teachers and some sustainability effort?

It is quite obvious that most of the people who have replied to thiis article know NOTHING about the situation in Sudan or in Southern Sudan. They are intelligent folks who find themselves about where we were in the U.S. 150 years ago as far as progress and government are concerned. There is no infrastructure in Southern Sudan. They have asked for NOTHING, but value education much more than children in the U.S. do. I know of what I speak because I have just returned from Southern Sudan and am a retired educator. The NESEI organization is comprised of an amazing group of dedicated Sudanese and Americans who want to help the children of Southern Sudan with secondary education. Educate yourself before you "sound off."
This is a wonderful charity .I love to sponsor a child and would feel bad if someone does not know how to read and write. YOu go PEREZ !!!

Thousands are killed in Darfur each year through the horrible genocide/ holocaust. WHY isn't anyone trying to help these people. WTF?! We are to busy in Iraq! We had no problems going to Bosnia to help those who were being killed off like a bunch of ants at a picnic! So whats the difference! The organization accepts all of the points you just made, but we cannot forsake a group of people because of what they are now. We need to help them, especially the opressed in their society. These are schools for girls, so that they can become more independent and give back to their communities. This is where it starts.
This is a great organization, it was created by and consists of amazing group of Sudanese, Americans and a growing network of global friends. Money donated is given directly to the cause. Southern Sudan was ravished by 21 years of civil war with northern Sudan, this is a separate but related conflict to the conflict in the Darfur regions. The people in Southern Sudan want education and this organization was started by a group of Sudanese who came to America as refugees and now want to go back and rebuild their nation. This organization is not just throwing money to an unsustainable project. It is crucial that an educational infrastructure be build in southern Sudan, how can you deal with all those other issues such as developing their economy, having sustainable teachers and doctors if you don't create the institutions to develop those things. The first school just opened and is a sign of the organizations great success. The NESEI school has very smart well educated teachers at their first school and pays them well. This is a great organization, thank you to everyone who is contributing to it!
Also, it is beneficial to us all to create sustainable development like what NESEI is doing. The more stable, peaceful and developed each nation and region is makes us safer and open to new markets.
