Some peeps are really pissed…at MTV!
According to new reports, MTV's offices in Mumbai, India, had its windows smashed with rocks, banners torn and some furniture damaged on Monday.
No…Mike Myers didn't cause the riot. He was NOT in the offices promoting Love Guru.
70 Sikh protesters reportedly targeted the MTV office because they found MTV posters (promoting a show called On the Job2) showing a Sikh girl massaging a man quite offensive.
The source says police later released the protesters on bail.
An MTV attorney said that no one was injured in the 'attack' and that they would consider the protesters demands to remove the 'offensive' posters.

perez, just because western civilization has deemed it appropriate to have such public displays of affection, doesn't mean that it's not "offensive" to others. Rather than being "offensive" it's actually very offensive. To you, being cultured means wishing the US was more like Europe, using chopsticks, and insisting that Islam is not a violent religion. It takes a truly cultured person to understand and appreciate that others cultures might find the public picture of a woman massaging a man sexist, demeaning, and truly offensive. Obviously, violence is never the answer, but I am glad that MTV is considering removing the posters.

Mike Myers just previewed the Love Guru for a bunch of Indian journalists and they loved the movie. Said it wasn't offensive to them at all and was in fact very funny and sweet with a good message. They said people jumped too quick without having seen the movie.

Obviously there are better ways to deal with this situation than engaging in violence, but be known that the views of the individuals who decided to create havoc at the MTV studios do not represent the views of the ENTIRE sikh community. Just with any religion, you have a spectrum of beliefs within the system. You have people who are orthodox and conservative, and then you have people who are unorthodox and more lenient. Perhaps this is the reaction of maybe a more orthodox group of individuals who have more violent tendencies.
Regardless, I'm not Sikh but I have many Sikh friends. It is NOT MEANT to be an aggressive religion although they do use a lot of symbols that may be considered aggressive to other people, such as swords, lions, etc. However, swords, lions, tigers, etc. are symbols present in MANY other religions (do your research people!)

having just spent two and a half months traveling in india, i can tell you all that it's not only sikh's that would find that offensive - the entire country is very conservative when it comes to public displays of affection of any kind, not to mention plenty of other countries in the world. mtv should have known that and respected it. bad form on their part.

In India they have not been modernized, especially in punjab where most of the sikh population is. There they mostly still live with wha we call olden day thinking. It was only 70 people out of nearly 20 million sikhs in india. Thats just like if say an abortioon clinic was protested by like 100 christians or something. Every religion has is strict fundamentalists. I am sikh and try to be very liberal minded in the 21st century.
Sikhs are very peaceful and tolerant of all people and we certainly do not devalue women, they are treated as equals. As for the ad, i havent seen it and so I cannot commen on it. If it was blatantly sexual in nature then i feel it should be removed, but never should you resort to violence to prove your point. That goes against our sikh principles.
It was only 70 people out of nearly 20 million sikhs in india. Thats just like if say an abortioon clinic was protested by like 100 christians or something. Every religion has is strict fundamentalists. I am sikh and try to be very liberal minded in the 21st century.
Sikhs are very peaceful and tolerant of all people and we certainly do not devalue women, they are treated as equals. As for the ad, i havent seen it and so I cannot commen on it. If it was blatantly sexual in nature then i feel it should be removed, but never should you resort to violence to prove your point. That goes against our sikh principles…
