Cross-dressing teens get own school bathroom
Thai officials launch 'transvestite toilet' in bid to cope with growing need

A secondary school in rural Thailand has designed a new bathroom that it calls a "transvestite toilet" for its growing community of cross-dressers.

The Kampang School in northeastern Thailand conducted a survey last term that showed more than 200 of the school's 2,600 students considered themselves transvestites, said school director Sitisak Sumontha.

So, when classes resumed in May, the school unveiled a unisex restroom designated by a human figure split into two, half man in blue, and half female in red. Below the figure, it says, "Transvestite Toilet."

Three transgender students praised the new restroom as they plucked their eyebrows and applied face powder in front of the mirror outside the stalls.

Tolerant
"I'm so happy about this," Vichai Sangsakul, a teenager with a pixie hairdo pulled back with a pink barrette, told Thailand's PBS new channel on Tuesday. "It looks bad going to female restrooms. What would other people think?"

Most rural Thais are conservative in many ways, but the trailblazing toilet initiative at the school in northeastern Sisaket province reflects another aspect of Thai society: its tolerance of the country's very visible transsexual and transvestite community.

"These students want to be able to go to the restroom in peace without fear of being watched, laughed at or groped," said school director Sitisak Sumontha. Using female restrooms made some of the other students uncomfortable and using the men's room often resulted in harassment, he said.

'Uneasy'
"They don't have problems with transvestites but going to the same private area, like a toilet, makes them uneasy," he said. "The transvestite kids may behave even more effeminately than the girls, do but their anatomy is still like that of a boy."

He said the concept reflected a growing need at Thai schools and universities.

Kampang is not Thailand's first educational institution to set up transvestite washrooms, though Sitisak said he believed it was a first for a secondary school. A 1,500-student technical college in the northern province of Chiang Mai set up a "Pink Lotus Bathroom" for its 15 transvestite students in 2003.

Deputy Education Minister Boonlue Prasertsopar recently said the ministry plans to count the number of transvestite university students.

He said he was not promoting trans-gender interests, "but if there are a lot of them in a university and it's a problem, we may have to consider building toilets and dormitories for them."

Transsexuals and transvestites are regularly seen on TV soap operas and throughout Bangkok, working at department store cosmetics counters, popular restaurants, in office jobs and in the capital's red-light districts. Thailand also has a trans-gender beauty pageants.

Amazing!!! I cannot believe how tolerant they are to their trans gendered students. Where I'm from people would probably be expelled from high schools if they expressed that they were trans gendered.

I went to Thailand and saw loads of transvestites, it's totally true. They're surprisingly accepting of gay people in Cambodia and Thailand too, at least on an individual level. Anyways, I think the idea of building transvestite loos kinda rocks :D D

It's sad you think this is so "fierce". I would guess alot of these poor kids are like this because of the sex industry and rampant child abuse in Thailand. I have a good friend who lives there and he's told me some real horror stories.
      "Fierce"…… You're an idiot.

why do girls always try to villify characteristics they don't have, but then praise people with characteristics they do have? like girls with big boobs always try to make everyone think big boobs are very important and thats all guys want. and girls with good asses try to make others think that all guys want is that. or girls with good skin. or girls die their hair blonde and think that automatically makes them sexy. if you weren't so pathetically insecure you wouldn't try to point out flaws in others!

Re: steph – not transgendered….transvestites…no snip snip….just the trappings of a girl…and i wonder why there is such a congregation of them all in one place. i think it shows its a learned behavior and not an inborn trait…not all people "know" when they are young that they are "different"…social and peer pressures apply here too

If they were disabled kids they would build ramps. Its only fair! my ? is how many of these students will take advantage of being in the same toilet as the bf or gf? I would like to see how this pans out, possibly more transgender pregnent men! LOL

i was in school in thailand for 10 months right near where that bathroom is now, and you would never believe the kids in those schools! the majority are boys wanting to be girls, and if its not that for they are pretty flaming gay, and most of the girls are lesbians. its just normal there. trannys can even be in beauty pagents, a friend of mine won!

Thais are much more comfortable with their own and other people's sexuality. Males with feminine traits are actually encouraged to embrace those traits rather than try and hide them. It has to do more with their Buddhist beliefs than with the sex industry. That doesn't mean all Thais LIKE it, just that in general they are able to ACCEPT it peacefully.

Re: Mom – I'm so sick of people getting offended by the word 'cunt'. It is just a word. I think if you use the words 'fuck' (which is a worser word for sex, or damnit), 'shit' (fecal matter, damnit) 'bastard' or 'bitch', or any derivations of those words, you should be allowed to say 'cunt', which is just a worser word for vagina, or annoying person. It is just a worse word, like any of those above. Why the fuss?
P.S I ALWAYS get people saying I'm trailer trash when I say this. I'm not. I'm a 20 year old girl studying law.
      P.P.S Good on Thailand.

Yeah, I went to Thai land, they are so accepting,it is beautiful, and very buddist. I have even seen a transgender or "Ka toi" beauty pageant when I was in the north or Thailand. You have to look at their calves and skinny thaigh's to even notice from the audience! A great Thai Movie that show's their tolerence is based on a true story called "the beautiful boxer", about a boy who boxes so he can become a she, with the money won. Check it out!

Has anyone noticed Tyra's wrinkle-free forehead? Isn't she 36 years old? She's definitely getting botox shots and it seems quite hypocritical of her especially since she preaches to be happy with your weight and yourself.

thailand has ALWAYS had a very high number of transvestites and crossdressers-always. Thats why theyre doing it. The sex slave industry and protitution is VERY big there and a lot of them are like that for that reason.
Its nothing like here where everyone is so stuck up over their shit ass lives and think theyre shit doesnt stink. People are so used to it there that it doesnt phase them.

Re: elysi – why would you want to live in a world were your genitalia nickname also refers to a derogetory remark… and when people like you use words like (fuck, cunt, shit etc.) to offend, and the reuse them as everyday slang… that just illudes to what type of person you are , who doesnt have the mindpower to expand their vocabulary to include words outside of "shock value" limit

i live in thailand and i can tell u that when it comes to transvestites, everyone here is open. Everyone wants to be beautiful and accepted in their own way and although parents may not approve, society is pretty damn used to it. So what right, they're humans too. I know tons of them and i gotta say, they're one of the greatest people to be around. They're funny, loving, caring, and if you get into trouble, they're there for u 1 hundred percent with their fake nails and fake boobs flying all over the place. Hmm.. that just made me realize that most women have that too…

In thai public schools you'll see a bunch of girls and like 1 or two gays in the crowd. ITS SO NORMAL. They're usually teasing and get teased by boys and enjoy it. the boys don't even care either, they're just another gender to them..

don't judge if you don't know.

It's not even about the "sex industry and rampant child abuse" It's just abt them feeling like they were born in the wrong gender.
