Kid Rock vs. iTunes

Filed under: Music Minute > Kid Rock

akidrock.jpg

Kid Rock is refusing 'to go all in' with iTunes for now because he thinks the Apple service is screwing artists.

To date, there's a minimal collection of Kid Rock's works on the iTunes site.

The rocker tells the BBC that artists do not get paid enough for downloads from the Apple store. The revenue share model is based "an old system, where iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don't give it to the artists," he claims.

He went on to say that the internet "was an opportunity for everyone to be treated fairly, for the consumer to get a fair price, for the artist to be paid fairly, for the record companies to make some money. But they (Apple) stuck to the "old system".

BUT as the interview goes on, Pammy Anderson's ex says, "I will be on iTunes eventually because I can't avoid it, but I like to always stick to my guns and prove a point and do something original and because I believe in it."

He makes no sense! Either you believe in it or you don't and you act according to principle.

At the end of the day, seems like Kid Rock proves the point that for the most part, peeps will 'sell out' to get paid.

Getting paid helps ya get laid, Kid!

"peeps will 'sell out' to get paid." Kinda like you? Kid Rock does have a point, and i can see why he eventually would go to iTunes because it is becoming unavoidable if you want your music out there. CDs arent selling…iTunes is!

It's pretty laughable for him to claim originality, with his new song being a COMPLETE Warren Zevon ripoff… and obviously Lynyrd Skynyrd (regardless of minimal credit given). Not…original.

I don'y understand why all these artists are getting mad over their songs being recorded 'illegally'. I'm sorry but correct me if I'm wrong, but did we not do this years ago before the cd was big? It was called a TAPE RECORDER. I can't count the number of times I would be listening to the radio and go "Oh my god, that's the best song ever, I'm gonna record it!' We're all guilty of it….they weren't whining about it then.

    17. 17

      18

      Peeps….
Kids a good guy and a true artist. Sure he has taken some songs and mashed them up to make a new song but what artist hasn't now a day? Every interview about that song he made sure he gave credit where credit is due.

Kid's beef with Itunes also has to do with his old school mentality of "protecting the album". True artists (that is the artists of the 70's) feel that they will put out a album that speaks to something and is a collection from start to finish…current artists are all about getting 1 hot song, putting it on Itunes and getting Paid…anyone ever hear of Soulja Boy?

Don't be a hypocrite Perez, today you proved to us all what a disgusting sell out you are. Even though Kid Rock is not a great artist, he's still doing something with his life. You on the other hand are trying to charge 5.00 a month for "gossip phone calls" all the while screwing your hard core fans by claiming you'll post the news on your site SECOND. I am not going to stoop to a level and call you fat and other names I've seen on this site. Your appearance is not the issue at all. I am simply disappoint that you've sunk so low as to do the one thing you claim you hate. I think you should apologize.

    20. 20

Oh boo fucking hoo!! I'm so sick of these "artists" crying about money when they have millions in the bank!

    26. 26

Because the digital stores are still so new, the system of licensing digitals sales hasn't been fully implemented yet. He's right, mostly the old model still stands but in Canada, we have started paying out royalties on digital sales and we have been working closely with stores like iTunes. Because digital is ever changing it may take a while to get a system that works best for everyone. However it would not shock me if labels were keeping money to themselves, it's not like it would be a first time. Artists, songwriters and publishers all deserve their piece of the pie.

      27

or perhaps he knows that people that are actually fans of his are the ones getting hurt if he doesn't eventually let them put his catalog on iTunes…..sure money is the point, but some artists do actually care about their fans

PEOPLE… PLEASE READ THE BBC ARTICLE. Perez only paints a small portion of the picture. SEEMS LIKE PEREZ DIDN'T FEEL LIKE TELLING THE WHOLE STORY!!!!

The Beatles, Garth Brooks and AC/DC are the only other major stars who have still not made their music available on iTunes.

The rocker, who was famously married to actress Pamela Anderson, said he was losing 10-20% of album sales by not being on iTunes.

But he added: "I've just sold a million records, I'm not really feeling that blow."

The performer - whose real name is Robert Ritchie - said his record company Atlantic had asked him to "stand up for illegal downloading" a few years ago because it told him "people are stealing from us and stealing from you".

Kid Rock has just played his first UK shows for five years

"And I go: 'Wait a second, you've been stealing from the artists for years. Now you want me to stand up for you?'

"I was telling kids - download it illegally, I don't care. I want you to hear my music so I can play live."

Asked whether he was worried about illegal downloading, he replied: "I don't agree with it. I think we should level the playing field. I don't mind people stealing my music, that's fine. But I think they should steal everything.

"You know how much money the oil companies have? If you need some gas, just go fill your tank off and drive off, they're not going to miss it."

    33. 33

      Re: Kelly
I'm going to correct you because you are wrong. He's not talking about illegal recordings or downloads (there's a levy on recordable tapes/CDR's anyways to cover the copyright for recording illegally), what he is talking about his not getting proper royalties for digital sales that were sold by iTunes. These are two very different things. He should stick to his guns and he should complain, it would be like your work shorting your pay a couple of hours. Would you stand for it?
I sure wouldn't. What's mine is mine and I would fight for it.

    34. bob says – reply to this

      34

you're an idiot for criticizing this. as much as i hate kid rock and his music even more, he makes one of the best point by an artist to date. the artist gets screwed by itunes and since there are still enough cds sold his music still gets out to the public, but in ~5-10 years most all music will be digitally distributed and if you don't join in by then your music just wont get heard/promoted and that means no tour sales (where the artists make their real money)

All music fans should read an article on antimusic . com about Kid Rock and the state of the music and concert industry. It talks about how and why ticket prices are so ridiculously expensive and then when you go to the show, there are a bunch of empty seats. It answers the questions on why promoters and artists don't drop the prices.

    45. Tron says – reply to this

      45

Despite an increase in ticket prices across the board, there has been a declining interest in attending these shows over the last half decade as concert attendance appears to be on the downslide and yet prices keep going up every year. Even a C-grade economist would tell you this is not a positive trend and something should be done, yet nothing is being done. Now it would be one thing to have prices go up and have nary a ticket in sight, but the reality is that almost every show I attend has empty seats but there are fancy accountants who still find a way to make these shows sell-outs for the Billboard Boxscore chart. A perfect example of this was a few weeks ago for the Jay Z and Mary J. Blige concerts in Chicago where the total attendance over two nights was less than 20,000 and yet somehow it was deemed a sell-out for two shows in an arena that holds twice that number on true sell-outs. Now why not let some less than fortunate or financially challenged people get tickets for $10 and experience the show? I've been told that it is said to be a sign of weakness and will "hurt the stock price" of certain companies the artists associate themselves with to admit a show is "not selling well".

Damn good point Kelly! :) I used to record songs off the radio ALL the time onto tapes but never thought about it like that lol. You know Kid rock did the same thing along with every other artist!
Whats good about it now is you don't miss the first 10 secs of the song because you had to hurry and run to the tape recorder and push 'record' lol.

OOOOHHHH……and what the hell r u talking about selling out to get money??
