my husband and i both smoke but it is usually when the kids are asleep inside and we are in the backyard.
we make an effort to not let them see us smoke because it really is a nasty habit.
im not sure we ever will but we make a point to tell the kids it is a very dirty habit that is hard to quit.
My son saw a no-smoking sign yesterday and said, "What's smoking?" I told him not to worry about it. Then he said, "Don't smoke it unless it's a BIG DEAL!" Ha!!! I agree.

Some choose love and some choose to convert others to fortify their own commitment to their addiction. Growing up both my parents were smokers. My mom quit 8 years ago and my dad for the first time in his life, he's been smoking for more than 45 years, is trying to quit. Neither me or my brother have even thought of becoming a smoker… SJP's kid still has hope!

Oh, c'mon people, back off…I get what he is saying…I smoked for 20 years and quit a year and a half ago - hardest thing I've ever had to do…I'm embarrassed that I STILL struggle with it, but I've somehow managed to stay smoke free…My little girl is 8 years old and she as never seen me smoke. I hid it from her because I never wanted her to see me - I was so ashamed. I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with cigs. Anyway, I asked her once if she thought smoking was cool, and without missing a beat, and in that innocent, honest way kids have, she quickly nodded her head and said, 'yes!' My heart sank. We have had many conversations about smoking and how bad it is for your health (how it killed my father), how gross it is, how it stinks…on and on - yet she sees movies and other outside influences that make it look cool to her, the way it looked cool to me when I was young. I couldn't wait to try cigs, I was so curious. So, she might have that curious 'smoker gene' too - my job is to keep on drilling home the negatives of smoking and pray it sinks in and she never starts…
Ugh, and that kid is so cute too.

That's intelligence twofold: not only are they teaching their kid that smoking is OK just by way of doing it, and exposing him to it unnecessarily, but Matthew's father died from cancer at the age of 55. not sure if it was smoking related or not but DUH. Also if you quit for a long time and then start up again, it's worse for your lungs than smoking. You are destined to get lung cancer stopping and starting. That's what killed Peter Jennings. The fact that their son asked why people smoke does not mean that he is a "budding…smoker". It could possibly mean that he doesn't see the point in smoking, or several other more positive explanations. The only way he would be a budding smoker is if his parents instill in him that the deadly habit of smoking is acceptable (which it is NOT), and it seems like Matthew Broderick is implying such an idea. The only way he'll think smoking is okay is if his parents make it okay. It has nothing to do with the gene pool. He says it himself that he can't quit for longer than a week, so because of his addictive personality, he is going to program his young son to think the same way. Matthew Broderick's comment was a true example of ignorance. Maybe if he would set a better example for his son, he wouldn't give into the fact that he was going to make bad choices.

I told my son that People smoked before they found out it is bad for people. There is very little hope once someone starts, but the ones who are finding out - now, that is bad - before they ever start, have a chance. He is only 6, but he understands.
