Who's Gonna Get The Job???

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Media Minute

russert.jpg

MSNBC talking heads Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are reportedly jockeying for Tim Russert's Meet the Press job.

Matthews was allegedly talking about his strategy to win the MTP anchor spot at Russert's DC memorial on Wednesday!

Eww. Tacky. Tacky. Tacky.

Matthews has of course denied the claim.

Olbermann supposedly said he'll quit if he doesn't get the job.

MSNBC has denied these crazy rumors.

A source reports that Russert wanted Chuck Todd, the NBC News political director he hired, to succeed him.

Is this Todd guy any good?

We've never even seen him on TV!

Good luck with your search, NBC!

This is so untrue. Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews were great friends with Russert and have to deal with stupid romours while they just lost there friend. This is coming from the conservative ny post post, that tries to bring down MSNBC and Olbermann as much as they can, even if they make it up.

Chuck Todd is great. He doesn't look great for TV, but his analysis is easy to understand he clearly breathes the numbers of the electoral college. Russert was awesome and it's easy to see why he would choose Chuck Todd.
    Also perez, you rock.

    Hi Perez:

Chuck Todd is the redheaded, thirty-something political director and numbers ace for NBC News. He's been on MSNBC constantly to explain the primary maps, electoral vote landscape, etc. throughout the presidential race. He is known as the most knowledgable numbers guy in politics. His name has come up as a possible candidate to replace Len Downie as editor of the Washington Post. Best yet, he is not bedeviled with the same allegations of agenda-pushing partisanship as Matthews and Olbermann, both of whom would make terrible Meet The Press hosts given their obvious bias in favor of Democrats (especially that Olbermann, who has MAJORLY jumped the shark and is basically just a liberal O'Reilly at this point). I think Chuck Todd would make a fine replacement.

As you would say: And there you have it!

Thanks for all your hard work.

  25. faste says – reply to this

    25

Either one of those hairless simians would tarnish the integrity Russert instilled in Meet the Press. I hope neither of them gets it and they find an unknown that is still principled enough to ask the hard questions of every person that comes on the show.

  26. jen says – reply to this

    26

Keith olbermann talked about this last night on his show. Total lies. Keith says he himself doesn't feel qualified to take the job even if asked. The conversation with Chris Matthews supposedly talking to his agent during Russert's memorial was actaully him talking to a friend reagrding something entirely different. This rumor comes from the NY Post which is owned by Rupert Murdoch who has an open fued going on with MSNBC and NBC news. Chuck Todd is Political director for NBC and has been on air a lot during primaries, etc. Can't see this job going to him.

  30. Lea says – reply to this

    30

Chuck Todd is amazing! He is the "math guy" during all the primary coverage. He even used a white board like Russert! He is by far the more qualified person to take over considering his vast knowledge of the political process. While I love Olbermann he is to oppinioned to become the MTP host, this person needs to be a moderator not a side taker. And forget Matthews! this guy interuptts every guest he has! No way could he step in Russerts place. Russert will be greatly missed….

  31. Sophi says – reply to this

    31

    1. How could you not see Chuck Todd on MSNBC? He is ALWAYS on when they're discussing politics.

    2. Both Olbermann and Matthews were both very close friends of Russert and I seriously doubt either were "jockeying" for his position at his funeral. That's just sick fodder probably made up by Fox News folks.

    3. Olbermann's show is the flagship of MSNBC. He's been consistently getting higher ratings than O'Reilly and is the highest paid anchor there. I doubt he would be a brat about not getting a position that he frankly is too partisan for.

For anyone to take over Russert's position, they're going to have to be extremely sharp, well versed, and above all else fair. Olbermann and Matthews are both very liberal and I don't think they'd be able to keep their own opinions down in order to question someone they didn't agree with.

Perez, I'm sorely disappointed in your "reporting". Stop trying to be so sensationalist. It's just dirty and low-class.

  32. Cindy says – reply to this

    32

I watched Keith Olberman on Countdown and he reported that this story was going to be coming out today. He indicated that the story was not true and he in fact he did not want the job. So much for Rupert Murdoch's newspaper making up this story!!!!!!!!

    34

This was spew put forth by Murdoch's NY Post which has a long standing feud with NBC, particularly Olberman because he points out so much of Bill O's stupidity. It is just spew. Track down Olberman's comment on this from his show yesterday. Olberman really doesn't want it. Matthews is not the right person (it is too much about himself). Chuck Todd might be capable but doesn't really have the "name" and in this media age that is what it seems to be all about. It would be refreshing to see someone like Todd. Schuster would be an interesting choice to groom for the job. Gregory is bombing on his show. The IDEAL candidate would be Rachel Maddow. Smart, savvy, left leaning but extremely fair and to the point. She at least deserves a show on MSNBC.

    36

Chuck Todd is the best guy I think. He would grow into the job much like Russert did. Matthews and Olbermann are too slanted to be truly impartial like Russert was. I love Matthews and Olbermann exactly where they are. No one will ever replace Tim Russert, but Chuck Todd is the guy.

  37. todd4 says – reply to this

olbermann and matthews are WRONG! they need someone more objective and factual like DAVID GREGORY! enough with the bashing commentaries - it gets old. the absence of that is what made tim russert so effective. stick to the facts and let the viewers form their own opinions.

  39. SanD says – reply to this

Of course, there is absolutely no sustitute for Mr. Russert, but CHris Matthews would probably be best suited. No one stupid from the morning shows.

If you watched Countdown last night, you would KNOW that this story is 5,000% FALSE! Keith Olberman doesn't even feel he is qualified for the job. Posting your opinions is FINE Perez….but passing off Rupert Murdoch's crap is unacceptable!

  43. 43

I don't really care for Chris Matthews, but I doubt that he would do such at a memorial. Of course it's Chris Matthews so it wouldn't be THAT surprising if he was so insensetive. However, Keith is a true gentleman and would never degrade the memory of his friend. I just think it's unfortunate that even after someone dies there's that one moron who has to make it into a circus. A man is a dead and he leaves behind family and friends who will never be the same… Yeah, that's something to make a mockery of.

  44. bluei says – reply to this

  47. Mia says – reply to this

    47

Well Perez, If you actually watched the news or the primaries you would know who Chuck Todd is! Chuck Todd is intelligent, articulate and fair. He was hired by Tim Russert because he thought he was an excellent political analyst and the new generation of news. Perhaps you should pick up a "REAL" newspaper once in a while.

  48. Dawn says – reply to this

    RIP…He was the best!

  49. 49

That is not true, you fucking ass hat. Chris Matthews doesn't want the job. He was overheard talking to a colleague on how best to approach a speech he is giving next week. Keith Olbermann admitted last night on his show that he is unqualified to take over.

If you or anyone else believes what Perez posted, you are playing right into the hands of the right wing idiots.

  50. Grace says – reply to this

    50

I doubt that NBC would seriously consider either Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann for Meet the Press. I enjoy both of their shows, but they're both too well-known for having liberal biases to serve as hosts of an impartial show.

Chuck Todd is a fantastic political analyst, but I just can't see him asking the hard-hitting questions that Meet the Press is known for. I really like the idea of Tom Brokaw serving until after the election, but among NBC's most visible journalists I would prefer to see either David Gregory or Andrea Mitchell as the permanent host.

  51. wilbu says – reply to this

I watch MSNBC News ALL THE TIME, and I can assure you that NOBODY on that channel is "vying" for Russerts job right now! They are human beings with hearts beating in their chests Perez. Give me a break! They LOVED Russert over on that channel. Many of those people idolized the man, and NOBODY has threatened to quit if they didn't get his job or whatever!!
    *
    *
Keith Olberman addressed these disgusting rumors on his show last night (6-19-08) that had been spread by a commentator on Fox News. Chris Matthews wasn't talking about getting Russert's job at his funeral! He was talking to a FRIEND (not even a producer or antyhing) about a speech he was getting ready to make in a few weeks, and was questioning what the big brass (studio heads) would think about his ideas for it or whatever. MSNBC is the last great truly bi-partisan news channel left on TV!
    *
    *
STOP SPREADING FOX NEWS LIES!! You should retract this story on your website, and tell your viewers the truth Perez. If you don't… you're no longer a "gossip gangstar" to me. You're Fox News' little bitch. Period.

    60

You're an idiot if you believe any of that. Watch a re-run of Countdown from last night and you'll see how hurt Keith was that anyone would even allege that. No one was ever in the running for that spot b/c no one ever expected Tim to leave so soon. Quit creating drama and spreading lies Perez. You put fuel in fires that shouldn't even be started.

Re: Yikes – I agree. Perez is the typical uneducated voter hence his flip-flopping on Obama/Clinton. Then once Clinton was out he acted like he supported Obama the whole time. I don't even know why I waste my time on this site.

  65. FReal says – reply to this

    65

Anyone who is so misguided as to think that Matthews, Olbermann or Todd are unbiased and credible must certainly be an Obama voter. If half of the Democratic party even knows they're biased, how the hell are they going to fool the other 70% of the country into buying the load of shit that says they're not? No one who has ever set foot on MSNBC has an ounce of credibility at this point — except to Obama voters who are retards anyway. NBC has to find someone who has never crossed over to MSNBC.

  66. Commo says – reply to this

    66

The reason you've never seen Chuck Todd on TV is because you have no idea what is going on in the world of politics. This helps explain why you endorse candidates without knowing their positions on fundamental issues. Increasingly you display acts of fundamental stupidity. How's the clothing line going, by the way? It's so funny, I haven't seen you mention it at all. I'm sure it's because it's doing real well.

  67. ann says – reply to this

    67

this is sooooooo interesting because at the live Memorial Service…Tom Brokaw opened with a crack about many people in this room vying for the job…maybe it had been overheard and then he decided to make the crack…it struck me because Mr. Brokaw is always a little above dignified and that was definitely a crack…listen to it…it got laughs but i think he was seriously making a statement…of course this is all IMHO….

  68. 68

Chuck Todd would be the best to replace him I think, he stays neutral in his reporting and he has a very wide knowledge of politics and the electoral college. I never heard that Matthews and Olbermann were in the running (I don't see why they would be either they both have their own very successful shows), one of the other names I heard was David Gregory.

  69. Stell says – reply to this

    69

Chuck Todd has been all over NBC and MSNBC this election cycle. If you have never seen him, it's probably because you don't watch the news. Then again, I am not surprised that you're not very politically informed. Might explain why you were a Hillary supporter, too.

  70. Nikki says – reply to this

    70

Nobody can replace Tim Russert. However, I like both Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews but don't feel they would do "Meet The Press" any justice. Chuck Todd on the other hand is young, bright and taught by Tim Russert. Chuck I believe would be a good choice

  71. Amy says – reply to this

Perez, do a little research. This story is completely untrue and unfair. Show some respect.

  72. sk8r says – reply to this

    72

This story isn't true. Olbermann did a diatribe about this on his show last night, explaining what Matthews' overheard conversation was really about. As big as their egos are, it'd be hard to believe either would be so tacky.

On a side note, Chuck Todd's pinky smooth skin sometimes gives me bad dreams.

Clearly you are politically illiterate! Since you claim to have loved and respected Tim Russert so much, you should know that Tim hand picked and mentored Chuck Todd, for the political news on MSNBC! He respected him and called him the future of political journalism! I'm sure Tim would be thrilled with Chck replacing him.

As far as you never hearing of or seeing him before, you must never watch tv or truly follow politics with any intelligence. He is on tv daily and is respected by all! Stick to gossip Perez or educate yourself by reading and watching more than one source for news - political or other! You truly show your ignorance daily!

  75. asdlk says – reply to this

    75

Keith and Chris should absolutely NOT replace Tim Russert. They are fine for what they are, hosting partisan shows on MSNBC, but that is not the job for Meet the Press. Tim was loved because he was fair to everyone and respectful. Chris and Keith have insulted many people on their show and I don't think they can bring the respect that is needed to MTP. Chuck Todd is not as outgoing as Russert was, but he knows his stuff and he seems like he could be fair and objective. But he definitely does not have that lovable Tim Russert personality and I don't know if the ratings would be any good for MTP w/Chuck Todd. But he'd still be better than Chris Matthews and Olberman! Please no Chris or Keith on MTP!!

  76. mandy says – reply to this

    76

Perez, you need to get your facts straight. Those rumors were from an article in the New York Post that has since been refuted and discredited. Olbermann vehemently denied any of this on his show last night.

You also feel like he is a guy you would have at your annual BBQ. As for the Olbermann & Matthews thing I watched Olbermann the day Russert died and it was obvious he had lost someone he thought highly of. Perez why not stick to the B & C list media whores as you really know very little original news and just are very good at copying from other gossip and news sites.

    84

I wanna see Chuck Todd. He's fresh, he's young, and after Tim Russert, he's the guy on MSNBC I relied on for analysis. I think he could ask the right questions and hold the politicians accountable. My next pick would be Matthews, and I love Olberman, but I think we already know what he "thinks" and people wouldn't be able to trust him for fair questioning.

This will come as a shock to you and your psych ward cell-mates, but MSNBC/NBC News are not the center of the news world, nor are they among the most credible. They are biased and unprofessional on a level that surpasses only Fox News. If someone wants to claim to be informed they should avoid them at all costs, lest be they become brainwashed Obamatrons. Try watching CNN and ABC News and reading The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, then go online and read The Guardian and a few other newspapers (other than the LA Times). Wake up and smell reality, bitch.

tacky? don't be so ignorant. this is the business. matthews has paid (and i'm sure continues to pay) his due respects to russert. besides, he is much more respectful and respectable than you will ever be. you need to think before you type and try not to be so hypocritical.

Chuck Todd sure knows his politics. He doesn't have much personalty, but he sure knows his stuff. He would be a good fit. I don't think crazy Chris Matthews or even crazier Keith Oberman would be good. They both let their feelings get in the way and I can't stand Matthews' shrill-screaming voice. I think even Andrea Mitchell would be a better choice than these 2 clowns. Chuck Todd though could be spruced up and do a good job. Maybe they need to change the show, won't be the same without TR.

How can you NOT know who Chuck Todd is? Have you watched any election coverage on MSNBC or even NBC? Wow, Perez, I love you, but seriously stop looking for celebrity gossip and look for relevant shit!!!

    Perez:
You are a smart guy, MSNBC is more interesting than macking on the Jonas Brothers, or doing free pr for Speidi.

Those two aren't worthy to wipe Tim Russerts boots, much less replace him. I'm surprised KO is still on the air. He is totally irresponsible.

Did you watch Kieth Olbermann last night?!? I did. The answer to those allegations was right there. Totally untrue. Perez, not only are you way late on this bit of "news," but you didn't even do your research, which would have totally disputed this claim.
