its a really good cause, but the stats they used are weeeeak… common, of course 60% of people know someone … it doesn't mean they know different people, but the way they stated this statistic makes it sound like they would all be knowing different people.

    … they're just weak lol

I love you Perez and I must say that I love when you bring to attention the Domestic Violence issue. I am a Domestic violence case manager and this is one fight that we need to go to war for. I hope our politicos do not cut any of the funding that there is to help put an end to domestic violence.

There are just as many abused men. The only difference is that men are more ashamed to admit that they are being abused. As an aspiring counselor for abuse victims, I find it very important that people open their eyes and realize that abuse does not just happen to women and children.

When I was 15, I was being physically and sexually assulted by my boss. When I came out to a small group of female friends, I was shocked to learn 75% had been raped or sexually abused by family members and friends. Seriously. To this day, only a small group of those girls who confessed what happened to them ever really told anyone else. It is a silent epidemic in the US and Canada and one of the best things you can do is to bring awareness to the cause.

what is it about stupid women who refuse to pick up their sorry asses and just go…take the kids and go. go to the police, a shelter, a church, there are hundreds of organizations that assist women in this sad situation.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS WORTHY CAUSE, PEREZ. IT'S IMPORTANT FOR AMERICANS TO REALIZE THERE ARE NEEDS IN OTHER NATIONS FOR PREVENTION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, NOT JUST IN THE U.S.

  39. 39

Re: JD – Whoa, hater much? Good god. Women stay w/ fuckers who are abusive because they are financially dependent on them, due to having to stay home and raise the kids. If they have no other family, shelters for violated women are a God-send. Now go away, JD.

  40. 40

Re: JD – My friend didn't even own a car, so she could get away, and when she tried calling the police, he said he'd kill her. So, there you have it. Anyone who says something as idiotic as "Canada sucks" doesn't merit my attention. End of subject.

This is for a good cause and for all of you assholes out there, you need to wake up breathe a little bit and realize that this isn't something to kid about. I was Sexually abused by a family member around the age of five and it lasted for 5 years or so. It hurt me so much you have no idea, what so ever. It traumatized me, and to this day, I still don't trust anyone because of this situation. This tears us apart. And for the dick head who said that us women's main purpose is for breeding maybe you should go fuckin' think again! We are for breeding, yes, as men are too, we provide care for our children and we help things like this become aware in society. It is serious, and for all of you fuck faces out there, I seriously hope some kind of karma comes around and slaps you in the face, and maybe then you will realize that you fucked up and that you shouldn't have said any of the bullshit you typed here!

    PEREZ.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for putting this up. I think you should do more about dating and domestic violence on the site to raise awareness. So many people are ignorant to signs around them, and what abuse is really all about. I'm so glad this ad wasn't a poor latina with a black and blue eye. Abuse happens to all colors, shapes, sexualities, and social classes. We need to raise awareness in America to better the lives of these abused women, men and children. Help them learn to escape and rebuild themselves as a person. THEY ARE STRONG!

And why does America have to step into the middle of every problem in every country? If we know have to help stupid men/women who stay in abusive relationships - that's just crazy. We don't even help the abused here in this country! I stand by what I said, and just hope the abusers don't make their way to the US (with our open borders and all).

Fine, give money to shelters, we need them, but
the stupid cunt will probably just go back to him.
No one can "help" these women until they decide
to leave for good. and how many kids have to suffer, how many cops
have to be killed trying to help til women step up and LEAVE.
I think women who go to shelters and then return to abusive men
should lose their kids and go to jail, along with the abuser.
And yes, I have been in an abusive relationship. I was being fucking stupid, but no one had the balls to tell me. Only I got myself out. And there is ALWAYS a way.

The statistics cited are hate and hogwash. In both canada and the US, women initiate severe spousal violence more often than men do.

Perez, if you are going to dislike husband abusers like Amy Winehouse and Sharon Stone and Heather Mills, you must know that feminist approaches to domestic violence are a hate crime.

If you don't believe what I'm saying, visit www.mediaradar.org and learn the truth.

One does not have to support radical feminists to be successful in Hollywood. Just ignore them.

    Re: Talar
Thanks for writing one of the few thoughtful comments about this post. I applaud Perez for posting this ad to help raise awareness about violence against women everywhere - in Canada AND the US, and wherever women are being abused. It's too bad people aren't getting the message that it's about the issue and are instead focusing on how it's a Canadian campaign. It happens to be run by The Canadian Women's Foundation - Canada's only public foundation devoted to women and girls. And yes, the Foundation only operates in Canada and funds Canadian programs, but I'm sure there are similar organizations in the US. If you feel strongly about the cause then take the time to research charities in your area that address women's causes.

On another note, I'm shocked and appalled by the misogynist posts about this ad. All of the horrific comments about women deserving violence are absolutely sick. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I try to not be anti-American but these comments make it tough…

Applause for you Perez! Thank you for bringing some additional awareness to this serious social problem. Here in the states violence against women is an problem of epidemic proportions. So much so that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (in Atlanta) is funneling millions of dollars into developing model anti-violence prevention programs targeting men and boys in an attempt to change the culture that supports violence against women. This means addressing sexism, racism, homophobia, classism and gender role stereotypes.

In our country intimate partner violence is so prevelant that 1 in 3 teenagers will be abused by their partner before they reach age 18. How about this: Women aged 16 to 21 are victims of crimes at higher rates than anyone else in our country.

Thank you, Perez, for bringing this issue to the attention of your legions of fans.

P.S. Canada is doing amazing things to include boys and men in ending violence against women. Google "White Ribbon Campaign".

Shelter from the Storm will help anyone who is abused and comes to them for help, it doesn't matter if you are a woman, child, or a man. ANYONE who needs help, please contact them.

The statistics may seem "weak" to some of you in here, but lets remember, there are only 33 million people in Canada, 60% of people knowing someone who is abused equals over 21 million people. The number actually seems a bit low, because I think that all of us know at least one person who is abused.

Please please please if you need help and don't know where to go, contact Shelter from the Storm, shelternet.ca, or womensshelter.ca in Canada

    or

shelterforwomen.net or www.usattorneylegalservices.com/battered-women-shelters.html in the US.

Guys, these links will also work for you. These people can help you.

What about all the abused women in the US, Perez? Maybe we should stick our efforts closer to home. Canada, as well as other countries, should fend for themselves. We don't see them helping our abused women, or helping us at all, for that matter. :P
