A Deserving Honor

While some U.S. Presidents get highways, schools or monuments named after them, that doesn't seem to be the case for George W. Bush.
A group in San Francisco, which call themselves the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco (sounds very official, huh?), is asking voters to sign a petition to have a nearby building named after the Prez.
The building they'd like to honor Bush with is none other than the water sewage treatment plant on the nearby coast.
Purrrfect!
And the name? They'd like to have it called the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.
Sweet and simple!
The plant is currently called the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant.
Brian McConnel, one of the organizers stated, “Most politicians tend to be narcissistic and egomaniacs. So it is important for satirists to help define their history rather than letting them define their own history.”
The plan is to place a vote on the November ballot which will supposedly provide “an appropriate honor for a truly unique president.”
The group already has plenty of signatures to qualify for being on the ballot.
Howard Epstein, chairman of one of the San Francisco Republican Party and one of the few Republicans in the city, is obviously against the naming, calling it "an abuse of process.”
He adds, “You got a bunch of guys drunk who came up with an idea and want to put on the ballot as a big joke without regard to the city’s governance or cost.”
Oh yea, the idea to name the sewage plant after Bush apparently came to the organizers while drinking at a bar.
If approved, the renaming would take effect on January 20th of next year.

Two things color Hobson's views on policymaking: his success as a small businessman—he became wealthy from commercial real estate—and the four military bases in his home district. He is strong on defense, but in a nuts-and-bolts, look-after-the-troops way. He's proud of his efforts to privatize military housing, for instance, and his fight to get more armored Humvees to the troops in Iraq. (He's been there several times.) He also believes in tight budgets—a sign on his desk reads, "It's the national debt, stupid"—though he isn't dogmatic about it.
Dave's a businessman who also happens to be a politician," says John Kasich, a powerful former Ohio congressman and Fox News commentator who is one of Hobson's closest friends. "Dave's not anti-pork, believe me, but the spending has to make sense." Hobson frequently won't sign off on a measure unless it has, in a phrase he often uses, "a business plan"—a clear set of achievable goals and a sensible way of reaching them.
Which is why this respected conservative has emerged, to his own surprise, as one of the toughest opponents of the Bush administration's extraordinarily ambitious attempts to expand the nation's nuclear weapons complex. The irony is that Hobson strongly believes the United States should have a state-of-the-art nuclear capability and a credible nuclear deterrent; he's even crafted a program that he believes would ensure this.
Yet on nuclear policy, he says, President Bush has committed a cardinal legislative sin: putting forth grand ideas without a business plan or even a coherent notion of their impact on national security.
Bush administration’s “abstinence-only” programs a failure, waste of $$$$
Over a billion dollars has been spent on abstinence only sex education that doesn’t work according to experts testifying before congress. The federal government currently spends $176 million a year on abstinence-only education, which only supplements the millions more spent on abstinence-only in state and local matching grants.
Programs teaching U.S. schoolchildren to abstain from sex have not cut teen pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases or delayed the age at which sex begins, health groups told Congress on Wednesday:
“Vast sums of federal monies continue to be directed toward these programs. And, in fact, there is evidence to suggest that some of these programs are even harmful and have negative consequences by not providing adequate information for those teens who do become sexually active.” — Dr. Margaret Blythe, American Academy of Pediatrics
What use could Republicans possibly need with such silly things as education, data, and science? Another battle in the Republican War on Science (and education.)
Bush has said repeatedly that the government must only fund those programs “that work.” Study after study show these programs don’t work yet Harry Wilson, a top official in the Department of Health and Human Services, told the WaPost last week “that the administration has no intention of changing funding priorities in light of the results.” Say what?
Henry Waxman astutely pointed out the idiocy of the policy:
“We are showering funds on abstinence-only programs that don’t appear to work, while ignoring proven comprehensive sex education programs that can delay sex, protect teens from disease, and result in fewer teen pregnancies. … we have no dedicated source of federal funding specifically for comprehensive classroom sex education.”
This is a choice between funding ideological nonsense or effective, comprehensive lessons on sexual health. Guess which one the White House prefers? Once again, another verification of the conservative psyche: ’stay the course even though everything tells you you’re wrong’ … classic. Dumb. Do I smell a ‘faith-based’ program or what!!??
The report, entitled Promises Made, Promises Broken: The Bush Administration's Record on Rebuilding the Gulf Coast, was released to coincide with President Bush's tenth visit to the Gulf
Coast, and exposes the Administration's missteps and mismanagement that have undermined the recovery efforts. Photo ops will not rebuild the Gulf Coast, said Senator Kerry. We need to demand that promises are kept so that New Orleans can come back stronger than before and families can come home. Six months ago, President Bush pledged to 'do what it takes.' Today marks the tenth time President Bush is visiting the Gulf Coast to say help is on the way. The help is overdue. Nearly 120,000 Gulf Coast residents are still in limbo waiting to even find out if they will get a disaster loan and more than 140,000 others have been turned away by the Bush administration.
We're insisting on accountability. If the Republican Congress won't do it, we'll do it for them. Our report today shines a light on a tragic pattern of mismanagement, mistakes and avoidance of real solutions for rebuilding the Gulf Coast. Enough excuses. It's overdue to give people the help they deserve. Today Senator Landrieu and I are releasing a report on the Bush Administration's mismanagement, mistakes and obstruction of real solutions for rebuilding the Gulf Coast in hopes we can get on the right track and give people the help they deserve, Kerry added. Actions speak louder than words, Sen. Landrieu said.
There is a great deal of work left to do and we need the Administration, including the SBA, to be a full federal partner in our rebuilding efforts.
I hope today's visit is not just another photo-op, but a turning point in the Administration's commitment to put the people of the Gulf Coast ahead of Washington politics.
When the President returns from today's visit, he should demand Republican leaders in the House end their threat to block money Louisiana desperately needs to rebuild our homes and communities.
The report, attached, describes the Administration's efforts to block key economic recovery legislation, to disregard local requests for bridge loan funds, mismanagement of the Small Business Administration's disaster loan program money, minimal oversight of federal contract awards, and painfully slow loan processing.

The most maddening instance of this selective interpretation of intelligence came in the administration's attempts to argue that Iraq had both the capability and intent to use its WMDs against targets in the continental United States. Given very little evidence that this was true, the White House focused on limited and contradictory intelligence suggesting that Iraq was outfitting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with equipment for a chemical or biological attack. And when it was discovered that Iraq had attempted to purchase navigational equipment for its UAVs that contained maps of the 50 American states, it was reported that Hussein could be planning a major attack. According to prewar Air Force and DIA assessments, however, the UAVs were likely intended only for reconnaissance and the navigational software for "generic mapping" purposes. But again, when consideration of the full-range of evidence did not reveal any conclusive facts about Iraqi capabilities and intentions, the mere possibility of the existence of these retrofitted UAVs–as with the supposed mobile bio-weapons labs and dual-use chemical factories–was taken as indication that Iraq did, in fact, pose a clear and present danger.
Re: Abiga – bush is an asshole just like you and he doesn't even give a shit about you either .I think naming a sewage after him fits perfectly because he is the most dumbest president ever just like you you fucking worthless piece of shit
he deserve this honor ,fucking douche bag !!!!!
That is very disrespectful to a president, any president of the United States. All of you Bush haters think it is bad now, wait IF Obama gets in office.
But that wasn't the case and the Bush administration knew well in advance that there were in fact no weapons of mass destruction.
The Bush administration blatently lied in order to proceed with plans to invade Iraq in order to continue the job George Bush Sr. instigated.

Re: diana – I'm so sorry Diana , you have a major point !
Why ruin your town with any mention or reference with the schmuck .
You guys in Oceanside and no one else for that matter deserves to be reminded of this awful excuse of a President , sewage plant or not .
I think a Tijuana landfill named after him is more apropos !!
Or…one of those donkey sex shows.
how dare anyone defame a perfectly worthwhile public facility after this douche.
im an american living in amstrdam..do you guys even read the news? europe is not laughing at us because of the liberals! we are liberals for the most part dumbf*cks
How ridiculously juvenile! Do these so-called San Franciscans have nothing better to do with their time? They're in Cali for God's sake. Catch some waves or walk around telling everyone how "narly" everything is. Even that would be more productive.
Actually, this sewage treatment plant represents the opposite of everything that Bush has stood for. The plant protects the environment by treating wastewater and storm drain runoff, cleaning the waste out of the water and purifying it before releasing it into the ocean. The plant is all about water conservation and reducing pollution. So while I understand the satirical objective, naming this facility after G.W.B. really kind of misses the point, and is more an insult to the SF water treatment system than anything else.
