Chris Martin forgot lyrics and chords on numerous occasions and the band just straight-up was not good.
Then again, the show was free for concert winners.

I was at this show. It was fantastic. Yes there were some issues, and Martin did seem to forget some lyrics but his charm more than made up for it. And us fans appreciated the gesture of treating us to a concert for FREE.
It was brilliant.
Listening to their new song as I type actually. Not sure why everyone keeps dogging on them. So far, their 2 new singles are AMAZING….better than some past ones. Plus, what kind of band that big plays a concert for free? That's extremely good on their part to not be paid for a gig. So what if they didn't sound perfect? Everyone has 'off days'. Big deal.

This reviewer was overly harsh. I was lucky enough to have won tickets and ColdPlay did an amazing job. Forgetting lyrics? Um, it happens, jesus, I forgot my age sometimes! Chris Martin and his band got interactive with the audience, and maintained their "arena showstopper" reputation by spraying confetti all over the ground seats. I thought the concert was fun, and Chris Martin, although arrogant, was really animated.
New York Post review thought they were great as did the 11,000 who were lucky enough to go!
Any takers if they were HIGH!!!! That wouldn't be the first for music, especially at a concert!!! Some people give the best performances while HIGH other seem to forget things!! Go figure!!
i was at that concert and i thought that it was great!!!!! and when he forgot the lyrics to fix you it was so funny and cute bc he started improvising. the only thing i really didnt like was that they didnt come back out for the encore…i've never seen a band do that at a concert. but i still love then…and it was free so i cant complain too much

I love Coldplay… and as my 4th time seeing them, it was the least favorite of my shows. But the tickets WERE free. I'm a huge fan. The fact that there was no encore was dissapointing. I sat there and waiting until way after the packed up the speakers. Bummer.

the review was harsh. he forgot some of the words like any other artist, but that was the whole fun of it. he didn't try to pretend like he got it right. besides, the show was supposed to be a rehearsal of sorts before they embark on the tour. i thought martin had funny banter going on and it was nice to see them so unrehearsed. everyone makes mistakes and they had fun doing so. i don't think anyone that was there left dissappointed or thinking that they sucked.
I was there and it was amazing!!! It's a live show, there are bound to be some mistakes…the crowd didn't seem to care…in fact it made the performance seem more intimate & charming. I had a great time…no complaints. Thanks for the FREE SHOW Coldplay!!! Viva la Vida!!!!
I was one of the lucky winners, but after attending the show, I wasn't so sure! The show was like a first time dress rehearsal that needed many more rehearsals. The sound system was the worst I've ever heard (there is nothing like the Dead's monster system). There was so much echo and distortion. I've concluded that Coldplay is a studio band and not to be enjoyed live. I do appreciate that effort they put out and that the concert was free. BUT I also went to the Madonna free performance at Roseland Ballroom and that was amazing. I may not agree with how much she charges for a ticket, but she is a true professional and an amazing performer!

Some bands are meant for small venues. I think Coldplay is one of them. Even when I loved them, I thought it would be best if they stayed in the venues which add to the intamcy of their songs. Now…they are just a joke. They are trying too hard to be something they aren't.

These sorts of free shows are designed to help the band iron out glitches prior to their 'official' tours. They try out huge stage shows for the first time, and get things fixed on songs they've been practicing. Hence… why it's free.

Uh… I was AT that show.. It was GREAT! They played really well, and Chris Martin was a good showman. I thought it was a great show, and they played a lot of their older hits too.
I was at the concert too and it was great. So what if they made a few minor mistakes, they even made jokes about how it didn't matter cause it was free. And actually the mistakes made everything more interesting because then they got to improvise and have fun with the audience. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about and have it out for Coldplay.

Coldplay have played quite a few free shows to promote this album. You can still listen live to one of them online free through BBC Radio 1. That show got awesome reviews all around and sounded awesome, even through shitty laptop speakers! I haven't liked every album Coldplay have made, but I really love the new one, it definitely gets better every time you hear it, like an Arcade Fire album.

I was at the show and Coldplay was amazing, as usual. While it's true that Chris forgot lyrics to some older songs, he recovered well and in his recovery futher connected to the audience.
It's true that critics/media like to bring a good thing down! The show was for true fans and I'm sure they weren't disappointed.
The lack of an encore on the other hand…that was a tad disappointing.

I had seats in section 345 and I got chosen to sit in the front row. I have been to 6 of their concerts and this one was equally as fantastic as the rest of them. So what, he mixed up one line and started laughing and everyone laughed with them..there was like one problem with sound for a whole 5 seconds before a song even started…IT WAS THE FIRST STOP ON THEIR TOUR!!! Just because they're famous rockstars doesn't mean that they're not fucking humans. People mess up…deal with it! AND IT WAS FREE SO STOP BITCHING!

I saw them during the X&Y tour a few years ago and it was the single greatest concert I've ever been to. Chris and the band were anything but anemic on stage and their sound was fantastic in a large venue. The only bad thing about that concert was having to sit through Fiona Apple as an opening act.
Reviewers are like management; they write tough to try to justify their existence. Musicians are human, the show was free, Coldplay is just starting to tour, and by the time the tour is in full swing every second of the show will go off like clockwork. Yup, even big rock stars have to iron wrinkles out at the beginning.

perez is an indeed an idiot when it comes to music; he's nothing more than a biased, predictable fag that jumps on one of two bandwagons–the kylie minogue/homo bandwagon or the obscure 'indie' bandwagon (you know, ’cause that's the proper hipster thing to do). in actuality, he should just stick to sucking cock. coldplay's new album definitely ranks close to a rush of blood to the head and parachutes. while lyrically it's quite straightforward and simplistic (not necessarily a bad thing), chris martin's voice, the melodies and instrumentation shine. 'lost', 'lovers in japan', 'yes' and 'violet hill' are real standouts in my book, with the remaining tracks still proving a decent listening. having said that, their live performance of songs off this album could stand to improve. i also don't give a shit whether or not chris martin is a dick with a bloated ego, standoffish, a diva, etc.–as long as he and his bandmates can churn out respectable music.

I went to the show with my company and we all thought they were amazing. The fact that he flubbed or whatever.. just goes to show he's human! And he was so charming about it. They sounded incredible and I totally disagree with those people who say it was awful. They were hilarious, charming, and sounded incredible.
I disagree! Neither my friend nor I are huge fans, but I got the free tickets, so we went. There were 2 times that they had some technical problems, but neither lasted more than a minutes. The lightshow (lasers, blacklight confetti, massive cool glowing spherical screens) was really well done, and the set was a good mix of old and new songs. The place was packed and everyone was on their feet the whole time. Chris Martin was really charismatic, they came out and sang a few songs in the audience, which had people flipping out. One of the best live shows I've been to, and I don't own a single album…but I'm going to buy the new one now!

I am a fan of Coldplay, and will always hold Parachutes as their best album, no matter what. I do really like their latest album though, and just LOVE "Strawberry Swing" and "Lost!", for the fun African-tinged rhythms and guitar. Yet, relating to the word on the street about the concert:

Well, I was there and it was GREAT!!!! The band was very cool, joking with the crowd, performed in the stands inches away from their fans, and the best part………it was free. They played a good amount of old songs and a few off their new album. They sounded great.

I was at this show as well. i think it is very unfair for anyone to give a bad review. Chris said, straight up, this is a practice. i think the accidents and difficulties made the show that much better. you just didnt know what was coming next. it was also a FREE show. they didnt have to even come out and do this for their fans, but they did. being grateful is an emotion that many people are apparently lacking in.
