Doing Her Part

22878pcn_roberts08.jpg

She's such a conscientious shopper!

Julia Roberts paid a visit to her local Von's supermarket in Venice yesterday, and she brought along her own recyclable grocery bags.

More people should follow her lead!

The actress is committed to being good to the environment. She just spent millions on building a new very eco-friendly home.

Julia puts her money where her big mouth is!

This put a smile on my face today. I think I am a Julia fan now. My biggest pet peeve is people who don't bring their own bags to the grocery store. It makes me soooooo mad. I can't believe all the stupidity I see at the grocery store. At least Julia's got some intelligence. Can't wait until the day plastic bags are banned.

Us Europeans have been doing this for YEARS! Plastics are not distributed in supermarkets since a long time ago.

Our grocery stores in south Texas are selling the same green bags, but with the H.E.B. logo on it. Every week I see more people using them. Recently I've seen Target and Macy's also selling similar bags to replace their plastic bags.

I'm glad she's shut her big trap about politics so far this election year. It's people like her that elect people that have us paying $4.50 for gas - liberals.

  21. Valer says – reply to this

    21

Julia also turned me on to another green grocery trip–bring your own tupperware to the deli counter!

I love this idea- no plastic baggies and I like having the food in my own tupperware, I swear salads and stuff last longer in tupperware than those cheapo plastic containers.

  22. Valer says – reply to this

    22

Re: Maria – As a bleeding heart liberal I take offense to the fact that you say its liberals who have us in this $5 (I live in Seattle…its $4.70 for gas!) a gallon situation. BUSH is the one who pissed off the middle east not liberals. Notice that I didnt point the finger at Republicans. As a liberal I try my hardest not to be judgmental because that gets us nowhere. Clearly thats for people like you to idiotically do.

It is sad that people still don't understand about our environment…..
Biggest pollutant….CARS…..even more than a house or grocery bags1
When I see the celebrities claiming to be green driving Honda Civic Hybrids (greenest car right now), then I will take them seriously! But they still prefer driving their stylish cars and travel in private jet!!!! Give me a break!

    25

Re: Valer – Please…..do you all have a mind of your own to think? Not everything bad that happens is Bush's fault! The oil prices are like that everywhere in the world. Europe was paying $4 a gallon way before Bush was president.

  26. ERIN says – reply to this

    26

Except that she charters her own private jet which kills the environment worse than plastic bags.

  28. Miss says – reply to this

    28

Are you kidding? She only does all this so she can act more smug and better than everyone else as is her way. There are plenty of people who bring their own shopping bags who do it with a smile on our face instead of a big sourpuss face and don't expect to be patted on the back for it.

  30. gardn says – reply to this

    30

so what, that's normal here in europe. you americans really don't think about the environment much, do you? such a little thing to do and it makes such a HUGE impact.

  31. alys says – reply to this

    31

    Re: Erika
if you actually worked in a grocery store your biggest pet peeve would be people who bring their own bags. it completely destroys the flow of how things work. its the biggest pain in the ass ever. if everyone would just re use their plastic bags for other things once they got home it would be fine. but bringing your own bags is very annoying to the cashier.

  32. accur says – reply to this

    32

Also just an FYI for the confused people Safeway=Vons=Paviliions are all the same company. I can use my Vons card at the new Pavillions.

    36

Re: Valer – Looks like you are in the minority my friend - polls just out today blame the congress by 77%. You see, when supply is low and demand is high, the price goes up. Since liberals in the house and senate have blocked every effort over the past 20 years to drill in our country, the prices are now beginning to skyrocket. In short, it's a supply problem caused by douche liberals in the Congress.

I'm so glad Julia can do her part by building a brand new house that helps the environment… Just sad that the construction probably put out more pollution and trash than her house ever will.

Re: alys – Oh boo hoo, it's the destroying the flow of things, waaaa! STFU, you fricken idiot! I can't believe people are so stupid. Do you realize that your "flow" is ruining the environment. Look up "plastic vortex" and see what you can find. Yup, you're encouraging it. Sometimes I wish I could take that plastic and shove it up ignorant asses like yours.
    .
Anyway, good for Julia. If you can't do canvas, at least do paper. Or the biodegradable plastic.

  44. Erin says – reply to this

    44

I wouldn't call Julia a leader because of this. They've been around for a while, and I see lots of people do it all the time — including myself. Damn things take a bit longer to load up than the plastic bags, but it saves a lot of waste!

Also — for this insane argument about liberals being the reason why gas is so expensive — most liberals are for an oil-free industry where you wouldn't have to pay a dime for gas. Instead, your cars would run off a battery that wouldn't pollute the environment and wouldn't make us either the slaves OR the arch enemies of the middle east. The technology is and has been there, but big oil discretely seized all the electric cars which were out there and conspired with automakers to halt their production (see the documentary, "What Happened to the Electric Car?").

  45. HAM says – reply to this

    45

pssh, that ho ain't shit, my mom even does that!

    46

…most places in europe charge you to use plastic bags, it's the norm to bring your own to the store. a star following suit isn't exactly heroic, maybe our stores should follow the euro style then that'd be something to talk about

  58. r says – reply to this

    58

UGH. She spent millions of dollars to build another home. Another home that didn't need to be built. More supplies wasted, more trees cut down for the scaffolding and shell of the home, more electricity used to build the home, more everything.

Fuck off all you eco-friendly for the camera assholes. You're not making the world better by spending an assload of money to build ANOTHER HOME that will take up that much more space in something's natural habitat.

Dude, the Alaskan oil is only enough to supply our oil needs for one year. That's all. The problem isn't democrats protecting wilderness, it's the fact that all of us here in America have been wasting oil for years, and we need to learn how to stop.

  61. jayme says – reply to this

    61

well hell, it's a good thing she spent all that money on new "green" reusable bags! (because using bags that you already have at home would be silly! they wouldn't match or say "organic" on them.) consume consume consume!

  67. Kim says – reply to this

    67

I live in France and 50% of the French population has stopped using plastic bags… in fact most of the stores won't even offer them anymore. This way you are forced to use re-usable bags. Now imagine how much better the world would be if 50% of the American population would step up to the plate… SUV driving, world ruining, polar bear killers.

Give me a break! Green my a**! She just took her family on a trip in a private jet. She is just another example of Hollywood hypocrisy. Hollywood is only green when it is convenient to be, but the minute it interferes with their ridiculously overpriced lifestyle, they are anything but.

  96. Abbie says – reply to this

    96

Julia is about as "green" as a gas guzzling car!

SHE TAKES PRIVATE JETS, PEOPLE! She built a huuuuuge "green" house, that can house a city, within. How green is it to build such a big place for so few folks? So what if she happens to be seen using recyclable grocery bags? She wears leather! She has pets! Come on, now …

She is a total hypocrite, Perez! She doesn't FULLY practice what she preaches.

  97. becca says – reply to this

    97

people like that think they are so above everyone else. not everyone can spend millions on an "eco-friendly" home. it's annoying how they preach too. also, that food is expensive! and you have to pay for the reusable bags.

  98. janeb says – reply to this

    98

big deal! What do these celebrities want a pat on the back? A medal because they spend millions of dollar going green when normal people have to use electricity and plastic? Julia Roberts is just being a bandwagon jumper as far as I'm concerned. SHe never gave a damn about the environment until it because the "trend" the hollywood stars started to drool over. Screw these self righteous celebrities, how are normal people supposed to relate to their so called "sacrifices" which involves not flying private planes as much.

  99. sourd says – reply to this

    99

    Re: alys

At my local supermarket they don't mind that i give them a reusable bag in fact I got complimented by the manager once. I always do the considerate thing and give it the bag to them before they even start scanning the food. Plus those cheap plastic bags aren't durable i had one rip while walking back to the store and it is just a waste to double up when I can just use one sturdy bag.

  100. Germa says – reply to this

    100

I don t like Julia Roberts but: What s wrong with your lack of environmental consciousness?
In China, just recently all plastic shopping bags were forbidden! In Germany, where I live, most people I know take their own washable and re-usable (cotton cloth) shopping bag with them to the super market, only when we FORGET to take them with us or bought more than we thought, do we buy(!) a plastic bag! Only LOWER-CLASS people sometomes buy plastic bags and do not use reusable bags…I suppose it s the same in Switzerland and Austria!

America seems to be DECADES behind all other countries world-wide as far as environmental-friendly behavious is concerned!
