The diva is fighting back!
Fifty artists recently recorded Prince covers in honor of his 50th Birthday this past June 7th.
Unfortunately for them, everyone's getting sued!
But the funny part is, they're being sued by Prince himself.
Yup!
Prince's attorneys are demanding that all copies of the tribute album be destroyed immediately.
In Norway, Shockadelica has reached No. 8 on the album charts. It's also received several popular reviews by the Norwegian Press.
So, what's the problem?
By law, it's legal to sell cover songs of someone else's material. You're just required to pay about a 10 cent licensing fee per song.
Norway's C+C Records has distributed 5,000 of the box sets since the beginning of the month. They've also given digital versions.
However, they say no one has made any money from the project.
So they claim they didn't think they owed Prince any money.
Just maybe a free copy?
Christer Falck, owner of C+C Records, said he contacted Prince's people to try and send a set to Prince and that's where the legal issues began.
Though luckily for them, with all the attention the lawsuit will bring, we bet they'll be selling a lot more than 5,000 albums.
Now you'll be able to pay Prince….AND your lawyer!

If someone wanted to sing my song and put it in a record to sell, I would expect a phone call at least and my permission…wtf. Tribute or no tribute.

He doesn't need to release a crappy CD with seventeen different producers on it like Madge does, he makes millions from his concerts because he is amazing live and is an amazing musician. Not many artists make monet from CD sales anymore, even when their CD gets to number one they don't make much money. Prince gave his CD away last year as he knows the music industry is fucked because of illegal downloading

If it was Prince's music the record company should have asked for Prince's permission before they recorded, tribute or not… It's just basic copyright laws, it was total ignorance on C+C records that they didn't. They failed the artists that covered these songs too, because now they might not ge paid. While I think it's kind of cunty of Prince to not have his videos on youtube etc..I can understand where he is coming from on this
Boy some people don't get it. A record company is selling boxed sets (expensive!) and claiming they aren't making money? Right. AND the boxed set is complied of songs by primarily of a bunch of unrecognized artists using the creative intellectual property of a iconic singer who happens to still be alive and kicking. Tribute, schmribute….this was just an effort on the part of those artists to increase their own brand recognition and the record company to sells some units.
Bottom line….all parties are LOVING this lawsuit. Prince gets paid (as he should), the artists get attention and recognition, and the record company sells more records.

The really funny part about this is that the man behind the tribute album is a f***ing HUGE fan of Prince. He's like totally obsessed and has one of the largest Prince collections in the world. He wanted to do this box set as a super special b-day present to the man himself… Damn, some people just doesn't deserve their fans…
