Project Runway and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition advertisers will be peeved!

According to reports, last week the the FCC announced it's considering new rules that will make it more clear to viewers when a paid product placement is happening in a TV show.

Yeah, cuz most of us can't suss out a product placement a mile away!

Spending on paid product placement has grown in recent years because advertisers need a way to reach all of us who fast forward through commercials when watching shows on TiVo/DVRs.

PQ Media, an alternative media research firm, estimates that paid product placement spending grew 33.7 percent to $2.9 billion in 2007.

In an order released Thursday, the FCC said it's considering whether sponsorship identification notices should be in larger type, appear for a lengthier period of time on the screen and whether they should appear at both the beginning and the end of programs.

The commission will also consider whether to extend disclosure requirements to cable make a determination as to whether its existing policies regarding children's programming already ban the practice.

Yeah, gotta help the moms!

Would make telling junior no to sugary cereal that much harder if he sees Dora eating it in a cartoon!

But, it looks like big business has the gov in their pockets.

We wouldn't bet on anything serious happening.

The report goes on to say that the FCC scheduled a vote on rules for embedded advertising at a commission meeting more than six months ago, but the item was pulled from the agenda following pressure by the advertising industry.

The item was pulled from the agenda the day of the meeting, despite having the support of the Republican chairman, Adelstein and the commission's other Democrat, Michael Copps.

The commission's other two Republicans, Robert McDowell and Deborah Taylor Tate, did not vote on the item at the time. A spokeswoman for McDowell declined to comment. Tate's office did not respond to a request for comment.

The probe announced last week, may lead to new rules, but is not as tough as a previous proposal.

In America, big business wins!

*yawn* Perez trying to get all political again … must be a REALLY slow news day.

God forbid that those "moms" that "need help" in "telling junior NO" actually raise their kids on their own, instead of looking to the government for help.

      "more clear to viewers"

I believe you meant to write the word "clearer."
"More clear" is a glaringly incorrect usage of the comparative; it is the sort of grammatical problem that was addressed in fourth grade.

well in regards to what number my post is going to be, 12th!!!
      take that!

but I just wanted to say…it's quite queer that you would be so opposed to product placement when your page is so full of advertisements that if you accidentally click somewhere on the page, you are forwarded to some site. Hope you're making lots of money, buddy!

Hypocrisy is soooooooo in right now.

As much as I do not like product placements in TV shows I have no objection to Home Makeover slipping in the occasional brand name on the side of a truck or dropping a product or company names during the show. Everything they receive is by donation, or I suppose in exchange for some publicity, it's likely that without the promotion that Sears gets through the show they would continue to fund and donate to show so generously. I see no problem with it in a charitable context.

Such insight Mario. Really - in a capitalist economy, business wins? I had no idea. Thanks for opening my eyes with your wisdom. Maybe you should head-up the Fed for become Secretary of the Treasury. Your keen mind is wasted by blogging.

Were you drunk when you wrote this? The sentence structure is awkward in several places, there are grammatical errors, etc.

Besides that, you have NO idea what you're talking about. If you're going to report, then do it. However, don't throw your two cents in. You sound like an idiot.

Big Business should keep its fucking nose out of the FCC. On the other hand, do I really want to see even bigger ad logos for product placement? NO! It's clear if they mention a brand, that's product placement. Only a DUMBASS couldn't see otherwise. And for those little fuckers here who can't be bothered with anything political, I don't want to see your whining asses as you are shipped off to Iraq after McCain becomes president. If you want change, you have to pay attention to what's going on in your country and vote. You also should have contacted your legislators to let them know you don't want drilling for oil around Ameria's coastline; it won't solve the problem! But I'm sure you're all too busy doing your hair to be bothered! Politics is important, so STFU.

Hell, they've waited over 380 days to vote on the Sirius / XM merger request. Shouldn't they get one thing done before telling us that we're too stupid to know that Coke paid to have their can on the table? What an absolutely worthless branch of gov't….APPROVE THE MERGER ALREADY!!!
