Coldplay Effs With the 'Little People'

Filed under: Anglophilia > Music Minute > Coldplay

chrismartin1.jpg

Coldplay and their record label are giving undiscovered bands the chance to 'open' for the group in San Jose, Chicago, Philly, Hartford, Washington D.C. and Boston by entering an online contest.

To enter, bands need to submit an original song performance via YouTube.

For those of you who are considering the contest — read the contest rules and fine print closely.

You could see your YouTube performance being used in ways you're not happy with and you won't be able to do anything about it!

There's even a line in the rules that says that Coldplay's record company can place your band's song on a compilation album and they wouldn't be required to pay up for usage.

It gets worse.

By submitting your bands' performance of an original song, Coldplay's record people have the exclusive option to sign your band to what appears to be a crappy record deal.

Is playing with Coldplay really worth giving up even an ounce of control over your original material?

Think about it hard!

You know, I don't get your recent vendetta against Coldplay. YOU'RE not signing up to play for them right? So..bugger off!!! People who are signing up for ANYTHING should read the fine print you twit. I know it sounds like a bad deal but you wouldn't get it at all. The chance to open for Coldplay is a chance of a life time, and if someone is doing it just to get a record deal, they're just douches. Listen. Coldplay cares about their fans/or the 'little people' as you call them. So. Please. Just end this little tirade you have going on about them, it's getting old. Byeee.

Sounds like another way for Chris Martin to steal someone else's work and claim it as his own. Because he hasn't had an original thought or song in …welll….ever.

If it means getting exposure to thousands of people that otherwise wouldn't give a damn about your band, yes, it is worth it. Stop hating. They're trying to do something nice.

sounds like a standard contest contact to me. I don't understand your recent vendetta against coldplay. they seem nice enough to me, although a little arrogant in a u2 sort of way. but not mean. this sounds like a cool opportunity to me, if I was in a band I would give it a go.

Chris Martin can't write worth shit. All he does is steel other people's song.

    Coldplay songs sounds like rubbish.

  21. K says – reply to this

    21

Wow, thats pretty horrific. Sadly, many bands will go through with it though just to break into the biz. It's a sad tale that resonates through the years of recording artists. They give up everything. Remember The Romantics? They have never seen a nickle from "What I Like About You" and that is one of the most whored out sings in recording history.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is something in there about ColdPlay "sampling" off songs played at will and for free, aren't they currently under suspicion of robbing a song from another group that the lead singer went to see one random night?

  22. 22

How does writing that he's a douc** needed?
What if someone called You an ENEMA!?

  23. Sam says – reply to this

    23

In the long run, it seems to be really good exposure. You get to open for Coldplay for one, their song could end up on a label cd that they'll probably give out to get bands out there. Compilation cds are how I found some of my favorite bands. It doesn't seem that bad when they could get major press for it.

  24. 24

I feel so srry for da band who is stuck wit dat deal.

  25. Gigi says – reply to this

    25

Good catch. But you can't really blame the Coldplay guys. It's most likely the record company's doing.

  26. Anon1 says – reply to this

Yeah …sounds real great…sign me up…I'm sure when his band was up and coming this is exactly the type of shot they dreamed about ..every band strives to be anally raped by corporate thugs …Good job Chris for attaching your name to that..

  30. spart says – reply to this

    30

All this language is standard legal stuff, without it Coldplay couldn't even hold the contest due to risk of litigation.
The exact same language is associated with any video submitted to Oprah, MTV etc.
Hell, even radio stations reserve the right to use your voice in a way you don't approve of if you win one of their prizes.

  31. huh? says – reply to this

More exposure is good for people who want it. Idiot.

  33. kate says – reply to this

    33

Actually this has nothing to do with coldplay, this has to do with publicity of the record company promoting the album. Heard the new album and I love it so I think you are off your rocker Mr. Perez with this one.

  34. SEXZY says – reply to this

    34

Yes, it is worth it. You could sell lots of records after being heard at a Coldplay concert. I commend them for doing this, they want to give people a break, give them a break! And did you see them perform on John Stewart - Chris Martin is soooooooooooo hot! But seemed a little fill of himself. I think it was an act tho, don't think he's really like that. He uses the public subways!

coldplay needs to rediscover themselves first…. their new cd sucks!! and you can tell that chris dude thinks he's god.

  37. anon says – reply to this

    37

I have known a few bands opening for coldplay and they didn't make it BIG.

It's obvious the record company having lost major big artists such as radiohead are looking for a new cow to milk.

In the past other good bands would open for coldplay because they shared the same label.
I'm afraid to say that's what it'll be again, only you'll entitle capitol records to screw you totally.

And it might be coldplay's management but i think the band has gotten big enough now these days to have a veto.

If not then they just probably signed the same deal as the one EMI is offering to a new band now.

  38. georg says – reply to this

    38

i fucking hate coldplay now. they have turned into the biggest douche bags, self righteous, beatles wannabes…especially that little fuck martin, in his stupid ass technicolor jacket with no shirt, running around like a kid hopped on cotton candy after a day at the fair…first they rip off that one band, now this…have you no conviction to who you once were coldplay??

  40. 40

  41. cindy says – reply to this

Um, and giving a new band a huge break is bad HOW? Quit hating on Coldplay- it's just unfounded and dumb. Let's see your album and humanitarian work!

  42. jen says – reply to this

    42

my boyfriend is in feeding 5000. they are in spin magazine after coldplay. i think it would do great just because they are in the same mag as them.

  43. 43

Wow Perez could you hate any harder on Coldplay?
It's just making you look jealous of their success.
Last time I saw them in concert they had Fiona Apple opening, so anything short of a trained chimp with a harmonica would be an improvement.

  44. eb says – reply to this

    44

all you have to say is NO if you don't want to participate, Perez. don't make a mountain out of a mole, Perez.

  45. 45

Also P has 'little people' in quotes, implying that Chris Martin called them that which he DIDN'T. Perez is the one calling small-time bands "little people" so all of you need to keep that in mind before you start bitching about Chris.

Uhhh…no ..not when tens of millions of dollars are at stake..what if that ONE little song turns out to be the biggest hit of the year? all it takes in one international campaign to make millions upon millions off of one song ..so no..not worth the risk and the exposure can be obtained on youtube these days if you are good enough

  48. L says – reply to this

    48

Let's see - could this be because you are working with a competitive label to sign new talent?

  49. 49

That's just typical of record companies. I doubt it has to do with Coldplay.

  50. sara says – reply to this

    50

Ok seriously?! What is your beef with coldplay? Are you jealous that gwenyth has swooped up chris martin or is your personal vendetta to make them look bad jsut because you don't like them? They are amazing entertainers who put a lot of work into their music and they care about their fans enough to do free shows after not touring for a couple of years. They want their fans to know that they appreciate all their support! Grr. stop bashing them!

  51. smart says – reply to this

    51

This sounds standard. Any original material on a compilation disk will still reap mechanical royalties related to the number of disks pressed as long as the writers have registered their compositions. So I think Perez overstates the bad here while totally ignoring the potential good. You don't die from exposure to Coldplay.

    54

tokyo hotel sucks assssssssssss….i hate them so much

  55. ceece says – reply to this

    55

Okay, so you hate Coldplay too. You pulled out a few quotes in a long contract. Sure it is a standard contract and it said that the band would be paid what their other new signed talent gets. Coldplay seems like a decent band. They recently gave a free concert at msg with a lottery to determine audience. Then they appeared on the today show and Chris was all over the stage, giving most fans the chance to see him close up. Don't call him a douche. He and Coldplay are giving local talent the chance to play the bigtime, opening a concert for a famous band. How many other performers have done this? Perez, you are the douche

  56. Whitn says – reply to this

    56

I just read the official rules and that crap is ridiculous. Its is like selling your soul!!! They straight out tell you that they arent going to pay you for anything but if they choose to, they will use your song, your band name, your likeness, and whatever else as much as they would wish. They can basically redo your entire song, make it a huge hit, make a million bucks off of it and you get NOTHING…OMG. NO ONE SHOULD SIGN UP FOR THIS.

  57. marco says – reply to this

    57

Does any body think chris martin got hair plugs, something different about his hair and hairline. Perez what do you think, look into it.

  58. oldfa says – reply to this

    58

This doesn't seem to be any worse than the contracts signed by Idol contestants. In return for a shot at the big time, you owe something to the guys that gave you the shot — well, duh. It is the music "business" after all, not a welfare agency.

Up and comers, seek legal advice — weigh the pros & cons — don't sign anything too long term — be a bit grateful for opportunities they don't grow on trees.

  59. I says – reply to this

    59

Hey perez stop being an A$$ you know damn well that the whole stunt never really came from coldplay it's from their record company. Furthermore LEAVE COLDPLAY ALONE! We all know why you are so pissed off at them it's because their album is still number one and your little puppet is number eight. She does have the number one single but there is there is three words for that and they are ONE HIT WONDER= Katy Perry!

    62

Still hating on Coldplay? Why Perez, you must be in total LUST with Chris Martin and he turned you down one time, now you hate him. Your jealously is UGLY. You're making things up now, PATHETIC!!!!!

  63. ... says – reply to this

    63

this is a normal deal..other record labes do the same..almost every bog label that would sign you will eat you up…leave you with no rights as to what and how to sing or write…and anything else. You try to be somehow knowledgable in this shiz, but you have no clue, really. this chance is a chance of a lifetime…and probably better than any deal a good young band could get. Coldplay stand for good music, they wouldn't do shit with it…their help the band become big. the tearms are there to make sure that nobody can then claim that it has been somebody elses before…every single casting show has these requirements. I must say, Mario, you're time is up…people hate you…more than ever…there's only about 3 people left here who actually believe your shit and support you. you suck, chris martin rocks

  64. LC says – reply to this

  67. Glori says – reply to this

    67

Crappy deal or not, it will let unsigned local bands reach new fans. This summer is going to be hard on local bands touring because of high gas costs; already many have had to cancel. If the top 15 that are chosen by each station can sell more tickets to their new fans it will help A LOT.

Not local bands are fronted by rich parents, many work and go to school yet are grateful when they can tour and play their music.

Perez - how about touring with local bands and showcasing all of the unsigned talent out there! Picture Atlantic could play!!! www . myspace . com / pictureatlantic :)

  68. ali says – reply to this

    68

Coldplay HAS NOT stole a song!! The record company and Brian Eno have demo tapes of the song taped loooong way before the concert of this band whatervertheirname. Plus, Chris never went by the way….>.>

And this contract is just legal stuff, nothing to do with the band.

I don't understand why americans are soooo convice that Chris is egocentric and a douche. Go watch him in interview or read them: he's the most shy and modest guy I've ever seen.

Ok thats it I am sick of you bashing this band. What the hell did they do to you for you to hate them so much. There management company is not the only ones that give new artist raw deals so why not post about others as well. I like your site perez but I am really starting to get super fed up with your negetive attitude towards this band. Madona is a bigger evil bitch then all four members of coldpplay can ever be but you love and worship her. Wake up fat ass no matter what you say the people that love the band will do so no matter what your loose ass says. Stick to what you do best and stop the hating.

According to the radio station in Hartford that you are on every afternoon with some 'news' for us, the winner , at least in Hartford, Ct. is getting $2,500.00 for the performance and possibly future performances with the wonderful, musically talented group.
The purpose of this is to find really good new artists and give them a chance.
No one can outsing Coldplay at the moment but at least they're trying to give unknowns a chance. Sounds like a good thing to me. island living in avon,ct.

    78

Sooo many people i know would PAY to sing before coldplay. concertgoers pay just to see them…so playing with them what a huge deal! and a record deal for a band who previously didnt have one…again thats HUGE. clearly you dont realise how much money that huge FREE publicity they get adds up to…and the association with one of the worlds greatest bands.

  79. avis says – reply to this

    79

I guess many of you decided to ignore the fact that there is proof that Chris Martin was in the UK during this concert that that band claimed he was at to steal their song. In addition, Coldplay had been working on that song Viva La Vida for years. If you honestly think they need to steal songs from some random band, then you greatly underestimate their talent.
Also, letting a band get their name out there with this opportunity seems like it'd be a HELP to the little people. I don't know what your problem is with this band or why you're trying to make them out to be a bunch of assholes.

  80. susan says – reply to this

basically everyone who gets signed initially gets a shitty deal. that's when you're no one. what do you think happens to the american idol people? they get the shittiest deals and because most of them suck they get dropped anyway, and/or realize this isn't what they wanted after all. getting a signed to a shitty deal should be no surprise.

  82. carly says – reply to this

    82

seriously perez, shut up. can you just say what you have against coldplay? cause you obviously are holding something against them. are you mad you didnt discover them first? i usually back you on stuff but i LVOE coldplay and coldplay fans are super loyal because coldplay is AMAZING and alot of people seem to think so. its most likely the record company's doing although im sure your doing your fair share of twisting THE RECORD COMPANY'S words. sorry you dont have good taste in music.

    89

Seriously, in the end - whichever band gets to open for Coldplay will be getting enormous exposure they wouldn't have received in the first place….there are rules and regulations for everything - if you agree to these rules and end up being chosen to play then that band might stand a chance to make it big…..youtube and Coldplay are doing 'the chosen band' a massive favour. Get over yourselves - there would be very ligit reasons why they have these rules in place. (I am by no means a big Coldplay supporter - I appreciate music and struggeling bands out there……Idol is way worse than this - have a reality check people!!!!!)

  90. Liz says – reply to this

Did One of These guys turn You down sexually Perez?
All the bashing is getting Disgusting!!

  92. Chris says – reply to this

    92

This is the oldest trick in the book. When a record label and artist cannot come up with original material, they have contests like these to steal original work from undiscovered artists. Limp Bisket did something like this a number of years ago. They needed a new guitarist, so they had a cattle call of guitarist to compete for the postition, and they all had to sign a contract. One very similar to Cold Play's. And at the end Limp Bisket never picked anyone from the contest and just found someone on their own.

Very Low. Cold Play sucks ballzzzzz….
