Starbucks is closing 500 of its stores and cutting 7% of its work force.

As many as 12,000 full-time and part-time retail positions will be eliminated with the store closures all over America.

This will be just grrrreat for our economy!

acutally its 600 of its underperforming domestic stores that will close and yes around 7% of its workforce — 12000 full- and part-time jobs.

Okay, first of all, I think it's dumb that Starbucks is closing stores. They are a world wide corporation that makes billions of dollars. I'm sure that they aren't losing any money since their coffee is rather expensive. People in our world have become so cheap lately it's rather pathetic.

This is good for our economy and exemplifies the beauty of capitalism - get rid of the low hanging fruit (and maybe an education so that you don't have to make a career as a latte-pusher). The overzealous expansion (to the point of market saturation and cannibalization) of Starbucks is a interesting parallel to the psyche of the gluttonous American consumer that got the country into this recession. Live within your means, chumps.

This is truly excellent news. Let's hope they do the same here in Britain where we hate Starbucks. Dirty outlets, nasty coffee, cups like paper buckets, vile tasteless tea and every one worst than the next. Fingers crossed this will be the end of them!! xxx

Well thats what happens when you put up starbucks in every street corner. I like Starbucks nothing wrong with it except that they are a bunch located with a mile of each other.

Re: mandy – Mandy you are awesome I love that you have your facts straight. These people here keep pointing their finger to whatever it is that their friends told them, people just need to understand how this company works instead of blaming "the economy" and "Mc.Donalds" come on, how uneducated are you people? please do your research before posting up stupidity.

Re: KrissyKat – In order to be certified as a Barista you need extensive training in the HISTORY, growing regions and art of coffee, if you don't share the same passion for coffee then turn away and go to mcdonalds for their water and sugar in a cup they call coffee. Everyone has a different hobby and if coffee is someones hobby you need to be a bit more mature and stop calling these people monkeys getting coffee…hey idiot, your latte isn't going to make itself… so please, stop wasting your time with your 13 year old comments.

      EAT SHIT AND DIE STARBUCKS.
as for their employees, find a real coffee shop and make good coffee instead of pushing a button.

Re: tomca – Actually you are wrong. I am 30, work for Starbucks and dont beg for tips because I have a generous salary. Starbucks matches my contributions to my 401-K by 150%, they allow me to purchase stocks at a 15% off of market price and they give me stock options that I dont even pay for, I just cash in when I need them. I have 5 weeks of vacation a year (paid) and 6 paid holidays plus 2 personal days and 40 hours of sick time. Not even to mention my health benefits, medical, dental, vision, adoption assistance, tuition reimbursment….I could go on but I will leave it at that. Bet your company doesnt offer you all of that!!

yeah…blame the government/Bush for Starbucks closing down stores….
Don't blame the competition of the free market (and McDonald's strategy to take away business from Starbucks with their iced coffees) or the fact that Starbucks was overly ambitious in the record # of stores it opened the past 5 years

Thank heavens the light of day is finally breaking through the clouds. I feel sympathetic to those who are losing their jobs, but I am unsympathetic towards a company who has driven out of business countless ma'n'pa shops that don't over roast their beans, and actually know how to make a proper espresso. I am glad the invasion of American bullshit is finally retracting.

my dad works for starbucks, he says they're terminating some of the stores because the owner wants starbucks to have a more 'rustic' feel, just like when starbucks first opened up.
