Being an FA I know how scary this time is. Don't think that this is just an American problem. My airline in Canada is doing the same. In any case, the companies don't give a shit about us anyway so why does it matter. They have been overworking us for years and it's just gonna get worse. they also tell you to put your seat upright to take off and land……what does it matter if the seat is at a slight angle of 4 degrees lower than upright ? i can understand if it is first class and fully reclined, but that really annoys me when the flight attendeant make me put my seat back up one extra inch or too .

There have been numerous studies on plane saftey, read those before you comment You choose wether or not you will by watching and listening to us. Write to your congressmen and urge them to lift the ban on drilling in ANWR. The drilling sites are completely remote and little wildlife and no flora is found in the area. We must cut our dependence on foreign oil while we explore other types of fuel. The damned environmental wackos are bringing this country down — which, of course, is their goal.

at what point will someone realize that elimination of a palmfull of senior management level positions layoffs (i.e., decision-making and bonus earning indiviuals) potentially increases shareholder value much more than the "cost savings" of of 900 flight attendant lay offs?

Re: FA – girl, at least you get bonuses. i've been a flight attendant for 3 years here in the states for a pretty successful low-cost carrier (not southwest) and have never gotten a bonus. in fact, we just heard today everyone EXCEPT EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT are getting a 5-8% pay cut. and yet our CEO just got a 5 million dollar bonus!

In most western countries with capitalist economies, the CEOs and other top executives seem to be immune to the fall out when the companies they head get into trouble. It must be written into their contracts. Even when companies go bottom up under the control of these "fatcats", they walk away with millions of dollars, while the workers are lucky to get anything. It is naive of Perez to blame high oil prices for the failure of companies, even the airlines. Bad management and greed have a lot to do with it as well.

If you've ever worked in certain areas of HR dept or close to the top of the heap on mahogany row… Those execs run calcs/ spreadsheet models on this shit all the time (and for a long time)…who to lay off, who gets a shitty bonus or none at all. Finally - some level of accountability for treating people like shit. There is no surprise here. The only surprise will be if American Airlines does not go bankrupt in the next 9 months. They have surpassed the mark for poor customer service, crappy old planes, delays, ….etc..they have been driving customers away for years. F?A's are trained to evacuate jets in under 90 seconds. Any jet that currently flies for a US carrier must be filled to capacity with volunteers, then evacuated by a crew of flight attendants in under 90 seconds. The airplane cannot go into service for that airline unless this is done. Over the course of commercial aviation in the US, there have been approximately 50% fatalities in crashes. That means 50% of the people LIVE. Who opens the exits and pops the slides? Flight attendants. Who puts the people out on the wings and tells them how to slide off? Flight attendants. Who knows how to use the Halon fire extinguisher in the event of fire? Flight attendants. Do you know where all the fire extinguishers are located on each different type of aircraft flying today? Do you know how to pull out the pin and put out the fire in a low, sweeping motion, or how to cut a hole in the lav door with a crash ax to put out the fire burning from some idiot's cigarette? Yeah, I thought you didn't.
Oh, and let's not forget medical emergencies. Do you know where the AED is or how to use it? If you had a heart attack, wouldn't you want someone on the plane who was trained in this and knew where to locate the equipment?

Yes, the downside of having a capitalist economy is recessions. We don't have the economic "booms" without the recessions, so we need to just suck it up, and prepare AHEAD of time. Re: $$$$$ – I am a flight attendant so I may be biased but -Just because the weather was nice where you were departing from doesn't mean it was nice where you were going. There could have been storms all along the route that you were flying. Would you rather have flown through storms and had a crazy turbulent ride? Also, think about if there were an emergency, i'd bet you'd cower in your seat. I'd be the one opening the doors and evacuating your ass to safety. Think about the danger of flying before you open your mouth.
I will get my ass off a plane myself - all stewerdesses have is 2 months of training. I can open and door and run myself. Don't need no bitch telling me to jump and run. I was in an Air France crash landing in Toronto and trust me the stews did nothing to get us out, once we hit we all ran. Hell some of those stewerdesses were the the first off the plane and ran like hell. They did nothing to help. Fire em all I say!
