Appleton police nab burglar drenched in barbecue sauce

Police early today arrested a man drenched in barbecue sauce after being called to a home for a burglary in progress.

Officers responded to a home in the 1600 block of Wilmer Street just after 4:30 a.m.

The couple living there heard whistling coming from their basement after the alarm clock sounded, police report.

The male resident armed himself with a shotgun and went to the basement stairs to find the light on. He turned the lights off, which led the burglar to ask what he was doing.

The burglar, who turned 35 today, left the basement and put his hands up upon seeing the firearm.

The burglar said he entered the home because he was on the run from the government, according to police. The barbecue sauce, he said, was an “urban disguise.”

The man was wearing the woman’s jacket and the man’s hat upon arrest, police report. His shoes had been left in the basement.

The man was booked into the Outagamie County Jail on one count of burglary.

Items taken from the home included a can of soda — and a bottle of barbecue sauce.

      We're all entitled to our opinions, so let me say that I find this image offensive. It doesn't matter if it's altered-I sure hope so!! And it has nothing to do with me "being too serious" or I need to "lighten up." While others are griping that Perez is "mean," blablabla, I could care less one way or another. However, I'm an animal lover and so is Perez, and there is no reason good enough to broadcast this image; it shouldn't be used at all, it just sends a bad message.       Perez, as your Corp. grows in power, it comes with responsibility; It can't be fun & games allll the time-but it can be most of the time. If you are going to be a responsible mass communicator, you have to be conscientious of the potential effect your message can have on society; What ethics and morals do you follow? Where are your boundaries? So that you know your limits. Using a picture like this "innocently" to either grab one's attention or to be funny or to be outrageous lacks taste and is potentially dangerous if these types of images now become used to evoke these feelings from a reader.

      You can't deny that your messages reach thousands and to what effect/extent? You don't know- but that's no excuse; It doesn't mean you don't still have a responsibility.

      Re: notfu – You know what? You generalize. New immigrants often come and start with nothing, because the conditions of their lives were horrendous to start with. That's why they go to an entirely different country. If things were good, they wouldn't be trying to affect a change for themselves. Most eventually build contributing lives. Plus 90% of Mexicans are Catholic, and as a whole, are much more respectful people with strong values because of it. Every culture has its criminal element, and every culture has its racist element, and you really sound racist. A very small percentage of immigrants are criminal; they don't want to be sent back. Another percentage are not making it and have to resort to illegal deeds temporarily to survive. A new immigrant has few friends or resources in a new country. As a traveler to Mexico, I've been dozens of times, and was always treated far better by some very poor but extremely kind, moral and generous people than by any people on any trip I ever took to the U.S. However, some tourists spots in Mexico are getting downright scary now, though, as more murders are being committed on foreigners for simple theft as the poorer criminals are fed up with the contrast in finances. I don't travel to Mexico now. Now wonder good citizens want to come north. It must be hell for some.

      That's easier than to understand and acknowledge the many far deeper troubles within a country. This poor BBQ soul just had a screw lose. It doesn't even say he was Mexican. If your administration actually wanted to control the border, they would control the border. I guess they're too busy controlling Iraq and Afghanistan's borders.
