The state of California just enacted a new law that all motorists must use a hands-free phone while in their vehicles.

It's been like that in Illinois (where his other home his) for at least a year. But, there are tons of people out here driving around without being hands free. The police seem to turn a blind eye to it.

I'm Irish and we've had that law here in Ireland for a few years, but the Road Safety Authority here recently were on our main current affairs radio program and they're trying to get people to limit their use of hands free kits too, cos apparently, the incidence of accidents while using hands free kits is only slightly lower than it was before. It's the using the phone itself thats the problem as you're distracted by the talking. It's like if you're using your mobile at home for example and walking around talking to someone and you get off the phone and realise that you can't remember where you left your cup of tea. When you're talking to someone who's not in front of you it distracts your mind….at least that's what the RSA say. Other than that, holding your mobile while driving is only as bad as eating while driving or drinking a soda.
