Jailed dog abuser Michael Vick has filed for bankruptcy protection, according to new reports.

Chapter 11 documents filed in federal court in Virginia on Monday say Vick is between $10-50 million in debt.

Those legal bills are expensive!

The former football player also cites assets in the same range.

The court documents list seven creditors, including the Falcons, Vick's old employers. The debt to the Falcons is for $3.75 million, listed as a pro rated signing bonus, but the documents state the claim is disputed.

Vick is currently serving a 23-month prison sentence in Leavenworth, Kansas, for his guilty plea in federal court to felony dogfighting charges.

His release date is July, 2009.

"He is in the process of paying his debt back to society for the federal prosecution," said Vick's attorney. "This will give him the opportunity when he gets out to start his life fresh."

Too bad those dogs don't have the same opportunity - to start their lives fresh!

Call me crazy, but this man lost his fortune over dogs. I don't agree with what he has been stripped of. I don't condone animal cruelty, but no way in hell should he have had to suffer such a tremendous financial blow. These are dogs we're talking about here! Uhhh, just so you know dumbass, all the dogs have been either adopted or put into foster care. they underwent treatment and evaluations to see if they could be saved. sadly 2 or 3 of them had to be put down from either injuries or they were too violent. but most of the dogs will also get fresh starts.

The media needed someone to make an example out of. At one time, hardly anyone paid attention to animal abuse not even these so called "animal lovers" until a man with a name was associated with dog fighting. Then, here come the almighty "animal lovers" with their chimes with let him pay fines/fees and then go to jail…that will teach him. Oh and to make us more authentic or believable, lets pull out our dogs/buy dogs (mangy, malnurished mutts from what I saw on television during the trial) to aid our cause. Actually, many of them DID get to start their lives fresh. Of the 49 pit bulls and pit mixes confinscated from Vick's property, only one had to be put down for being human aggressive. The rest went to santuaries or were polished up and sent into foster care, and are now finding happy homes–homes with children, cats, and other dogs. Go to badrap.org for details. These dogs have a wonderful story! And I'm sooo glad to hear that Dick, ahem, Vick is struggling. He got off too easy.

It wasn't just dog fighting, idiots. He also was involved in illegal gambling…big money illegal dog fights, Electrocuting the dogs. And then he perjured himself in court. He could have gotten a lighter sentence if he'd been honest.

And, actually, there is a documented connection between animal abuse and other violent offenses against people, so if he did this to the dogs, he's likely to do it to people too.

I'm a Hokie (who was at VT during the Vick era) and a Pitbull owner, so I have a strong emotional attachment to this story.

Anyone who abuses animals or children deserves no sympathy, and should be jailed (and in my opinion, tortured mercilessly). Animals didn't ask to be here, don't have a voice, and depend on people for their quality of life. The LEAST we can do is to make certain they live without fear or cruelty…DON"T get any animal if you can't take care of it properly. They are not disposable. Too many people in general are ignorant, selfish assholes who lack empathy and should never own a pet (or produce offspring). In Sweden recently, they passed a wonderful law that makes people have to pass testing and have permits prior to having a pet. At least they are one of the few civilized countries left in this horrible world.
Those of you who keep saying 'it's just a dog' should just move to a Muslim country, they hate dogs too so you'd all fit right in!

Clear… AND THE REST OF YOU - he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of conspiring to run a dogfighting and gambling venture from 2001 to spring 2007 in Surry County…MORE than your worthless ACCOUNTof him just going to jail for the dogs. Let me tell you…HIS crimes involved Drugs, Gangs, Violence and promoted cruelty to animals. He got a very light sentence…and HE DELIBERATELY got transferred to Levenworth by turning a dirty urine stating he was in need of drug treatment - He did not want to face Greenville Correctional….HE WAS SCARED…Much like his murdered dogs…
