Frozen embryos better than fresh, study shows
Using frozen instead of fresh embryos produces healthier babies, a new study shows.
Fewer of the children born from frozen embryos were twins or triplets
Infants born from embryos which were frozen and then thawed before being implanted into a woman had a higher birth weight and were less likely to suffer abnormalities.
Fewer of the children were also twins or triplets.
Multiple births are known to increase the risk of complications as well as the danger to the mother.
More than 1,200 children born between 1995 and 2006 after frozen embryo replacement (FER) were studied and compared to 17,857 children born from "fresh" embryos.
Freezing embryos allows couples to have several In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment cycles from the same egg collection, reducing the number of times that the ovaries are stimulated.
The eggs are placed in the womb three to five days after ovulation in exactly the same way as fresh embryos.
Multiple births accounted for 27.3 per cent of children born from fresh embryos, compared with 14.2 per cent when frozen embryos were used.
Babies from frozen embryos were on average 200 grams heavier on birth than those from fresh embryos, the findings presented at the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (Eshre) in Barcelona.
The proportion of low birth weight and pre-term FER children was significantly lower.
Dr Anja Pinborg, from the Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet, who led the study, said: "Most encouragingly, we found no increased risk of congenital malformations in the FER group; the rate in this group was 7.1 per cent compared to 8.8 per cent where fresh embryos had been used.
"We think the reason for the differences is probably positive selection of the embryos for frozen embryo replacement.
"Only the very top quality embryos survive the freezing and thawing process.
"And you only get pregnancies in patients with lots of good embryos to freeze."

I think that interestion. Maybe they should start freezing all of the embryos and then unfreezing them if it is making for heathier babies. Plus it lowers the chance of more then 1 babies. Twins are 1 thing but to have 3, 4 or 5 at one time is INSANE!!

Healtheir AT BIRTH perhaps. Why is the fetus heavier? Whats causing this? Will this weight gaining trend extend beyond birth?
I love the way the media latches onto studies. One study does not make something true.
Adoption is not easy and is very very expensive. It's not like you can go to the baby store and just pick out a kid, sign a form and take it home. Folks wait YEARS to be CHOSEN by birthmothers. The adoption process is so invasive as well. It just isn't simple.
As far as "playing god" goes, I believe God gives us knowledge. Why not go to a doctor who can help you create a family? If you won't see a doctor for infertility because it's playing god, then you shouldn't see any doctors for anything. Cut your leg off sawing down trees? Oh well, God must have meant for that to happen and seeing a doctor would be "playing god." Need antibiotics? Don't do it! Playing god with illness! Man shouldn't cure anything!

It is not playing God when you are using the medical technology God gave us. If God didn't want everyone to have a baby, he would not have allowed the development of the invitro process. I am the mother of a beautify 3 year old girl who I would not have if not for this process, and we are trying for another. God gave us the technology, so we are not playing God by using it, we are doing what He wanted.

Our 14 month old son is an IVF baby.
I have to say there are some very ignorant individuals out there. Speaking as part of an infertile couple who has struggled for 7 years to conceive….we did try to take the easy route and adopt one of the "many children". A process that they told us would take 10 months….has now been over 2.5 years with a possibility of 4 more years. So I am glad that we did try the IVF route and am happy that I have 8 frozen embryos waiting to be implanted!!!
Well … I am just amazed that you would have this story. I love reading about so many thing that you post and it was nice to see something that affects a lot of people. I know .. I read some of the posts and I know that it's not related to a specific celebrity but little do they know that A LOT of them go trough IVF to have children .. just that this is such a personal issue that they don't want to share.
Well .. I am hoping this is true since I do have four little frozen embryos … I do have a little miracle after 5 years of IVF treatments and I hope that I am blessed again.
It is amazing how many people are affected by this and many don't even know it.

Re: Nicol – Wow you don't use your mind much I can tell. God didn't not give any technology to anybody. Last time I checked it was people that created the technology we have surrounding us. It is the human brain that has gotten us to the point of living that we are in not God. The fact that people choose to believe in such a thing shows a lack of crytical thinking and allow their mind to be subdued by story telling and brain washing and the fear that if they don't believe in what they are told they will go to hell!
Re: dmd – Yeah, a lot of people shouldn't have kids (your mother being one of them), but people who want them bad enough to go through IVF are not the ones you need to worry about. Those people are usually highly educated, financially stable, and want more than anything to love a child. They have trouble conceiving becuase they spent time getting educated and making careers for themselves, thereby waiting until they were older to start trying. If we completely give up and allow nature to take its course, mankind will soon be nothing but a massive welfare state made up of the drooling illliterates who seem to be the MOST fertile (only because they're having babies at fifteen–again, like your mother).

My son was just born and he was a frozen embryo. If it was not for IVF I would of never had a child!!!!!!!!

This is so wrong…. every think that the medical care has something to do with the high numbers on the "frozen pre-planned babies". Some people just have sex in closets for conception! eat pringles the first trimester with beer. The other ones are usually rich and on prenatal before conception and right on it from before they know they are pregnant with sea monkey…
I conceived both of my children through IVF. One was a fresh embryo - the other was a frozen. I feel so blessed! If you are undergoing a frozen transfer - feel confident because it really does work.

The only benefit of the frozen embryos is that it apparently reduces the chance of having multiples. However, there is less chance of the embryo actually surviving once implanted. Same with frozen sperm. Just not as good as the "fresh" stuff

I think it's hilarious that most of the people who knock this remarkable medical science are the same ones who have their kids or were born "unnaturally" by having c-sections, ect. Let's put an end to c-sections and see how many babies and mothers survive.
Also, got cancer? Don't use chemo or radiation. You know, that's just gods way of letting you know you're not to live a long life. You should just except the cancer for what it is like "dmd" says.

Has it all really come to this? I'm so sick of the world toying with nature and trying to play God. So, I suppose soon that we'll be saying that conceiving a child naturally (and the way that was intended) is somehow abnormal? I'm disgusted.

And finally, many of those celebrity 'twin' mommies….it is NOT because they release more eggs because they are older!!! Older eggs are CRAP and are harder to fertilize…most of those mommies have been spotted in the top IVF clinics around the country…just wish those bitches would fess up and use their pretty faces to draw attention to this plight!

I had twins through a "fresh" IVF cycle and miscarried from a frozen cycle…studies go either way. Interesting banter…I presume that those individuals who comment about toying with "God" and "nature" are those who have never been told they cannot concieve their own child. I suspect they might have another opinion to medical miracles if they were put in such a situation. Maybe their ignorance would prevent them from experiencing the gift of giving life…hummm, sad sad individuals. May God with have pity on you and grant you with quads….

I am a very blessed mother of the three IVF babies one 3 1/2 years and two 1 year old. This has been a blessing in our lives to have three wonderful healthy children, how cld you say this is not the work of God?!! You have to realize, adoption is HARD to do. If you're gay, single, have a health problem…Adoption agencies turn you down…It's not easy by any means…Anyway you go about it…
