Counting Down To The Strike

strikerobin.jpg

The biggest actor's union, SAG, met with reps of the media moguls again on Thursday.

And, no surprise, there's still no resolution!

SAG rejected the offer the suits put on the table Thursday.

Reps for the major studios again insisted the deal was their last.

"We made it clear our final is our final and that we're not interested in further counterproposals," said Jesse Hiestand, a spokesman for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

SAG continued to claim it was willing to negotiate and presented a counterproposal despite the titans' stance.

SAG's chief negotiator said the guild made a "comprehensive counterproposal that adopted some of their proposals and offered alternatives on others."

The union's reps are scheduled to meet today, Friday, to discuss the situation and said they will contact the studios' alliance later in the day.

AMPTP claims SAG was "unreasonably" seeking more than other unions.

SAG is seeking greater compensation for DVDs, something neither writers, directors nor a smaller actors union could secure in negotiations.

SAG also wants more say for actors when they are asked to endorse products in scripted shows.

Will SAG actually call for a strike if things don't get settled?

The media moguls are using the economy card to avert a strike and get SAG to accept their offer.

A statement released by the studio mouthpiece said, "The last thing we need is a long, hot summer of labor strife that puts even more pressure on a badly struggling economy and deprives audiences of the entertainment they clearly desire in such difficult times."

Wonder how this will all play out!

A strike would definitely suck, but corporate bullying sucks hard too!

I'm sorry, do actors not get paid enough as it is? I thought 10 mil a movie would have been plenty. Gotta pay for that botox somehow!

Unions/Guilds are so last millenium. Get over yourselves and get back to work. In case you haven't noticed the crappy state of the economy, they should feel lucky to have jobs.

This all seems extremely frivolous given our economic status at this point. Thousands of Americans are losing their jobs due to no fault of their own, and these actors are complaining about not having enough money! Atleast they have enough to be able to refuse to work. I'd honestly prefer not to hear anymore about this.

SCREW corporate bullying, Perez! TV viewship is down because of the writer's strike, and SAG has the audacity to demand what no one else has been able to procure this season? The economy can't take much more, and this is stupid!

Perez, you really need to stop giving advice on things you know nothing about i.e. the SAG contract. Stop aggravating the situation because most of your readers are not in the industry and don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Blah, blah, wah, wah, pay me. Yeah right, the US can't afford to drop $20 anymore for a date at the movie theater when it's $4 or $5 a gallon for gas these days. Give the audiences a stimulus surplus package and PAY US for going to see this shit they've been churning out for the past 5 years!

Sorry to tell ya this SAG, but in this economy the first thing to go is the entertainment that I deserve. What I deserve is reasonable gas prices, since all of the money I would spend on entertainment is going into my gas tank. I cannot feel sorry for a community who throws their money at Scientology, diamond dog collars and closets full of clothes for dogs that they carry around like accessories. I'm too busy trying to feed my family and educate my children.

Like I really care if some movie star that lives a mutli-million dollar home isn't being paid for DVD sales. SAG needs to get over it's self!! There are people in this country that can't afford gas or food and we are suppose to feel sorry for the ultra rich!!

It's my good ol' trusty '89 Lincoln loaded with nasty shit. Let's see what we got.
It's got everything a sexual deviant could ever ask for !

We got the naked barbie doll, porn mags & dvds, explicit music with sexual references.

i support a strike even though i may not work all summer now. perez, you are right. it's corporate bullying, and that's exactly what the studios do to not just most actors, but all of us - they bully us. show after show after show. only a handful make a lot of money, the rest of us get shat on.

  25. Melis says – reply to this
    25

actors are already way over paid, they do not deserve the money they make. The only reason I care about the strike is because it will hurt the little guy around the studio most. (ie, cameraman, stage hands, etc)

This is disgusting. There are hard working "normal" people living in this country that are losing their jobs due to the poor economy. These are people who live paycheck to paycheck just to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table. To watch the money spent by actors these days makes me sick to my stomach - enormous houses, over priced clothes and many other ridiculous items. Not to mention the quality of good television is poor (reality tv is seriously horrific to watch) and mediocre movies are not worth the already large price tag associated with going to see them. The country is going down the toilet quickly and it seems like nobody gives a damn.

  29. Nessy says – reply to this

These actors need to get their heads out of their ass. Most can't act worth a damn, but still get paid millions for movies that are just as crappy as their performances. I'd like to see these whinny people live off the salaries that all of do regular people do. Maybe then they'll shut the hell up about not being paid more. Boo fucking hoo. Cry me a river. Most of us are trying to decide whether to get food or gas, and they whine about DVD sales. Their priorities are fucked up. I guess some of these "actors" who came from nothing forget what it's really like for the real guy.

first off PEREZ, that's not what the main issue is about. It's about residual payments with new media. With what the AMPTP want to do is basically make it impossible for actor's to make a living off acting. TV actors and people that only get reoccurring guest star parts make the bulk of their money off residual payments from syndication, AMPTP doesn't want to let that happen. There's arguements on both sides but let's not make it impossible for the real actor's out there to not be able to live doing what they love.

  34. 34

Actors haggling over whether they get 2 million, 5 million, 10 million, or more per film.

I would love a million dollar pay check. then i could pay off all my bills and live comfortably for the rest of my life, but i would still work. got to have insurance!

totally agree with you. times like these make you realize what is really important. i live pay check to pay check and my "entertainment" now is packing up a picnic lunch and going to the park and playing ball with my daughter. makes you realize that those are the things that really matter in life.

SCREW corporate bullying!?!?!? Perez, you don't shit besides kissing AngieHo's ass, and talking about how good the new Kylie Monogue is. The real bullying is coming from SAG itself stupid. The AMPTA is trying to make it easy for SAG, but inreality SAG are being a bunch of ASS HOLES. I'm hoping that their isn't a strike, because if there is, i ain't going to the movie and pay a ridiculously $12 on some fucking movie that i know will probably suck.

    FUCK YOU PEREZ!!!

  41. think says – reply to this
    41

they have a point–it's not an economy card. it's the truth. yes, bullying sucks, but so do gas prices and the rising cost of groceries. there are other people in or connected to the industry who aren't actors, writers, or directors and who work their asses off all year for a fraction of what the "higher paid actors" make in a day. I'm sure they'd love to be empathetic for their cause but when they strike, *everyone* has to strike. that means people who aren't in any way benefiting from the strike and who may not be able to withstand the work stoppage.

I don't know, call me crazy, but having to move out of your home because you can't work and the reason you can't work is because a union has an ego and wants to get a better deal (for people who can *afford* not to work already) —That SUCKS.

ACTORS ARE NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE. but for the other industry workers and businesses who get a huge proportion of their business from the industry, SAG certainly has the power to fuck up their world.

  43. AMY says – reply to this
    43

Ok Perez you need to hate on these fuckers!!!!!!! Look at our economy!!! I think it is completely selfish of them to go on strike when America is in the state we are currently in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. David says – reply to this
    44

As a member of both SAG and AFTRA, I can guarantee that I DO NOT make more than 80% of Americans! Truth of the matter is, is that only about 2% of all SAG members actually make the kind of money all you haters on here are upset at for wanting to strike. SAG is NOT being greedy, they, unlike other Unions are really looking out for their members… ALL their members, not just the top tier!!! These new negotiations are really about protecting the middle class non-2% group of actors who really don't get paid the big bux the other A-listers do! And SAG is NOT looking for pity, and of course they don't want to strike, especially during these economically-challenging times. However, the AMPTP is sadly mistaken if they believe that using the "poor economy" excuse is a sufficient reason to force and guilt-trip SAG into signing a flawed contract. Negotiations and compromises need to still be made; Producers better take these meetings seriously and not think they are above signing a fair deal with SAG!

And for those of you who believe it should be so easy for SAG to just accept this new deal… well it would be just that easy for the AMPTP to be fair and give actors the better deal they deserve.
